Malmsteen and Gilbert have swift picking, but Shawn Lane was the quickest at what he did. His actual learning technique was to play something as swiftly as he could and master it in those speeds, THEN play it normal speed to be able to play it perfectly. Well, it is my opinion that in terms of sheer speed, none of these guys are the fastest at all... Neither is John Petrucci, or Tosin Abasi.. None of them play anything faster than 300 BPM 16th notes which is fast, that's 20 NPS, but no where near the fastest.. I have multiple videos of NON MUSICAL speed runs, up to 600 BPM. David Shankle is faster than all of them too, and don't forget John Taylor, the current GWR record holder. Fame should not be the factor on which guitarist get into the list.

You really need to up your knowledge. The fastest guitarist is Tiago Della Vega with more than 21 notes per second. Rusty Cooley is faster than Malmsteen. Then you forgot about Guthrie Govan, Frank Gambale or Francesco Fareri. To end all debate on wether faster = better, listen to Francesco Fareri; No. I think he's horrible, but he's very fast. On the other hand, faster doesn't mean worse either: Guthrie Govan is extremely musical and very very fast indeed.

Dude. I like this list. Especially yours and my number 1, Shawn Lane. He's probably the fastest and most all around musician of modern times that ever was. He also shredded on the keys! He had tastes in all kinds of music and it showed in his playing.
I would have put Yngwie in the number one slot. After all, he's the innovator that pretty much brought the "neo-classical" style to the guitar world, and the fact that he's super fast while picking as opposed to just a series of hammer-ons and pull-offs.

With Shawn you cant say if is alternate or sweep...you cant see the pick, and he had psoriatic arthritis!! Also he was an amazing piano player

He can't be better than Yngwie or Becker" but when I heard Lane I was like "Wtf, he's so much better than Becker it's not even funny". Becker is all about sweeps all the time, and yeah, he's good at that. But Lane is faster, plays with more feeling and has much better phrasing than Becker.

They always play for the most part the fast tunes like Movement 3 of Moonlight sonata, The Four Seasons, and etc. but they also play the slow ones. point being is that speed doesn't mean you're limited or that it makes you bad at your instrument. Playing fast is just as much a part of music and playing slow. How about you go educated yourself fuckface.

@TheShockerVI you're argument is about as bad as beating a dead horse. Feeling isn't one universal thing, some people like their speed and feel that. Some play slow blues and feel that. Saying all it is is feeling is missing most of the point. You need technical prowess to be able to make what you feel. A good guitarist by the name of guthrie govan once said. If you can play what you feel, you practice till you gain the technical know how to be able to play what you feel.

Jason Becker:A Legend. by far the Best composer and have tons of ideas in creating Music. His influence : Paganini, Yngwie(but he already topped him)
Shawn Lane:Also a Legend. he has an amazing guitar skills and invented new techniques. Unfortunately, he passed away by PA disease.
Rusty Cooley: the Fastest guitarist ever known..His Shreds is Lightning speed.

I would have put Yngwie in the number one slot. After all, he's the innovator that pretty much brought the "neo-classical" style to the guitar world, and the fact that he's super fast while picking as opposed to just a series of hammer-ons and pull-offs.

With Shawn you cant say if is alternate or sweep...you cant see the pick, and he had psoriatic arthritis!! Also he was an amazing piano player

@Santeora I knew about Becker before Shawn, and was like "Shawn Lane? Who's that? He can't be better than Yngwie or Becker" but when I heard Lane I was like "Wtf, he's so much better than Becker it's not even funny". Becker is all about sweeps all the time, and yeah, he's good at that. But Lane is faster, plays with more feeling and has much better phrasing than Becker.
