I washed it, peeled it, cut it up and ate it raw! It's good I love it. It tastes a little sweet and like a mix of cucumber and carrot to me. I can imagine it would taste good in a stir fry, I'll try that some time soon. Next I think I will try some steamed though. The ones I bought didn't come with the tops, but if I find some with tops are those edible too?
The kohlrabi is one of the most important vegetable for the chicken and noodle soup. Because I cannot find any at the shops I started to use the swede but I still miss the kohlrabi. I love it. As soon as I'll have a garden I'll buy some seeds.
I discovered kohlrabi this year when I saw seeds in the store and the front of the package said "easy to grow." I thought: that's my kind of vegetable, and I've been planting them and buying them from the farm market ever since. No need to sell me on it. Even creepy talking ones won't scare me off at this point.
@Bestleeks Nah. Only kidding about that part. He seems like a friendly ol' chap...I don't understand why kohlrabi's not as popular in the states as other places. I guess it's like football and football.
@nerdmom920 You'll need to grow a special variety to get talking ones. Mind you our talking kohlrabi's can get a bit annoying at times so probably best to stick with traditional varieties.
Great video. @nevermorefarm introduced me to Kholrabi and now its my favorite vegetable! I am attempting to grow my own - battling gophers and my not-so-green thumb. I raise heritage livestock on my farm - veggies are a challenge to me!
I run a small CSA farm in California and was looking for an informative site to help introduce my members to kohlrabi. Your video is EXCELLENT, it lets them see the plants in the field as well as demonstrate what to do with it.
i grew Kohlrabi for the 1st time on my allotment last yr, enjoyed the taste so much, i have now got them sown in the greenhouse, all ready for planting out later this yr, i also grew some kale too, but they went str8 into the compost, they were horrible lol
Kholrabi is the favorite vegetable of kashmiri's from india...I can eat it everyday for the rest of my life! Unfortunately it isn't easily found here in the US...and when I do find some they are just too small and too expensive
So can you eat the leaves? I'm confused. I read to pick as much as you want and leave the rest, but if you eat the bulb you can't do that. I'm confused about this plant, but I have several seedlings started.
I love the talking plant, much better than harvesting, I agree.
Yes you can certainly eat the leaves. You can eat the whole plant if you like but the outer skin of the bulb is tough and fibrous. The leave stems are also a bit chewy.
I wish you success with your seedlings. Just remember that Kohlrabi likes rich soil and plenty of water.
Cabbage rootfly is something I have not heard of so no it's not a problem.
As far as using OP on pests, for many years we have not needed to use any hard chemicals on the kohlrabi as adopting full IPM on our farm has been working really well.
I saw Kohlrabi at the store and I wanted to know how to prepare it this video helped thank you.

@Rubystars1000 Good to hear. How did you end up having the kohlrabi? What did you think of it?

@Rubystars1000 Yes you can eat the tops. Use the tops the same way you would use kale.

@kepstein8888 I never intended the kohlrabi to be creepy. I hope he's not scaring others away.

Great video, I am growing kohlrabi for the first time this year. Can't wait to see my boys picking them up and making them "talk".

@nevermorefarm Great to hear. I decided to do this video as we also had so many questions from the public about kohlrabi.

Good bit of animation.
Do you have any trouble with cabbage rootfly in Kohlrabi.
In GB we now grow swedes under wondermesh to exclude the pest, due to OP ban.
I tried Kohl Rabi but customers & land more suited to swedes.
