  • It is said that Baba Allauddin Khan had given the art of performance to Pt Ravi Shankar, the art of teaching to Ud Ali Akbar Khan and the art of Music itself to Smt Annapurna Devi AKA Roshanara Khan.

    She is a true genius.

  • Superb. Height of Surbahar

  • Thanks a lot for posting this... She is nothing but 'Music in human form'. I dont know what really happened in her life that made her retreat to solitude.... But isn't she doing wrong to the real music lovers.... I really really wish she would come out and let us listen to her music

  • Ravi shankar wanted to reach the world and publicity ! and maybe he achieved it.. but music wise not a doubt it is annoporna devi no doubt.

  • This is simply the BEST music on the whole of Youtube. I can't say anything more.

  • Really Devine!

  • I would like to add: Alauddin Khan Sahib once told, What I have, Ravi has got 20%, Ali Akabar has got 30%, the rest is to Rawson Ara (Annapurna).

  • Why she is so unknown???

  • She is the youngest of Allahuddin Khan three daughters. He taught her after hearing her correct her brother Ali Akbar practice.

She declined to perform in public, or to be recorded, after her divorce from Ravi Shankar. But despite Ravi Shankar's treatment of her, she always acknowledged his greatness as a musician.

There's a saying about the three: Allahuddin taught Ravi Shankar how to play the music; he taught Ali Akbar how to teach the music; he gave Annapurna the music itself.

  • divine!

  • How can we approve Ravishanker as a great man sitar when knowing the talents of Annapurna devi. He cheated Annapurna Devi and Nora Jones. He cant be called as a pandit but as a Badmaash.

  • @eldhorajv007 I respected Ravi Shanker till I read your comments. I like his talent in Sitar. But leaving his wife who was his guru's daughter too......how mean and selfish he has been. Will always love his Sitar but will hate him for not being ungrateful......

  • It is so sad to me that I'm 65 years old and JUST NOW hear the GREATEST soul on Sitar I've ever heard... this is so pure.... why has the world never been able to hear her bliss until now- why are there not millions of CDs for the millions world-wide who crave this nectar divine? Maybe the world has gone insane?

  • @sitarnut i believe she is wise in to not have her name spread. She is pure and divine, so how could she be exposed to so many and be put down for no reason... people can be so cruel. She chooses to focus on her soul's flowering, and her very existence is proof of love and goodness in this world. With nothing to prove and nothing to gain. That's love.

  • Where and how can we get to listen to,more of this divine music? It's a great pity that,we have such a great artist here amongst us in India, and yet, we Indians are deprived of such good music.Bad luck,is only one can say!

  • Hariprasad is her disciple. By the way, to the best of my knowledge, she is Ustad Allauddin Khan's Daughter

  • Thanks Pradeepd2.How can we get to listen to more of Smt.Annapurnadevi?Such a great artist amongst us,and we in this genetration cannot get to listen to her music!

  • @pradeepd2 She is the daughter of allahuddin khan, presently lives in bombay as a recluse. She is held as goddess incarnate by those who know in indian music

  • how possible to touch so deeply since it is such an old tape!

  • If we know the petty things Ravi Shankar did to supress the great artist Annapurna, he doesnt come out as a great man but a dwarf of a twirp. I hope her music will find its way to the grand public thru such archival recordings.

  • @MrAvinashbhatt

Indeed, when they were married she was a s great or even greater sitarist to Ravi shankar. It is a pity her talent got hidden

  • @srtambe she was always a much better talent than ravi shankar or AA khan. ravi forced her not to perform after his marriage since he thought she was eclipsing his career.

  • I wonder why Ravi Shankar ever kept silent for his wife's enormous talent...

  • Beautiful...............she is a legend, just like her father Baba Allauddin khan...........salute to u

  • great musician,indeed!

  • I heard this piece again. Shaili237,I think you are absolutely right. There is no gimmickry and her music as you say is tranquil. That, I agree, is more important than tayari!

  • What is so great about her playing? Is she, for example, exploring hitherto unexplored areas of a raaga? Or is the tyari great? I have an open mind but would like some one to explain why this music is so great. I wonder if we Indians are great at creating myths and legends about people without a detailed scruitiny.

  • i am not indian, but we turks have a saying:

"for those who understand the whiring of a moscito is enough, for those who dont understand even an whole orchestra is not enough"

ur decision to whom u belong ;))

    great vid, thnx alot.

  • I think you are right!

  • well this is too short and bad recording for any of us to comment. but we definitely can stand by the witness of none other than nikhil da, hariprasad chaurasia, nityanand haldipur etc.

  • i dont agree - her class comes through in the 1st 5 notes!!! yes one cant judge her tayari - but the meends give enough indication that even that was there.

  • either you can experience the "chain"(peace) in her playing, which is why she is deemed great, or you cant! the raga is pure, clean, the playing sure, the feeling perceptible..... what else is great music!!!

  • @rajeswari51

An open mind maybe but closed ears. If you actually listen to this you would not be asking the question. If you have listened to it and still ask the question, you just need more experience listening. It is simply an astonishing rendition with tremendous feeling.

  • @rajeswari51 If you need to have explained to you why this is great playing, you are not ready to understand the explanation. And when you are ready to understand the explanation, you will understand the absurdity of asking for an explanation.

  • Can't thank you enough for sharing this rare piece of music ....

  • Maa annapurna Devi...plz... i dont have any words ...Maa is really greattttt....sakshaat...Maa Saraswati....!

  • The instrument sounds like a living breathing thing! marvelous playing...

  • wonderful to hear! thank you
