  • it there a dvd with all the things that happened on August 28th 1963?

  • Oh yes!! as a 60's child I grew up listening to Mahalia Jackson; probably everyday of the week this was awesome... Thank you for the memories, lest we never forget!

  • looks like the children of yesterday were in washingington again for Obama 2008,can we say 4 more years? YES WE CAN....

  • I was touched by the statue of Abraham Lincoln, the man who tried to get America to live up to its creed, All Men are created equal. It will never happen.

  • I WAS NOT BORN YET WHEN MAHALIA SUNG THIS POWER SONG IN 1963, BUT I LOVE IT JUST THE SAME.

  • Zep 2:2 Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD'S anger come upon you.

Zep 2:3 Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD'S anger.

  • Oh Yes!! Magnificent !

  • Glory to God!!! Mahalia got me shouting ealry this morning at work!!! Remarkable video!!!

  • @vanqua1: Go'head, Gooo'head!!!

  • @vanqua1

She is really on fire no the podium singing!

  • @opengates777

I wish I could sing with that kind of power. It's a gift.

  • @blacsouljah

Do not wish, ask God for the gift to sing.

  • @opengates777

    Thank you. God bless.

  • @vanqua1 Bay-BEE you didn't know????!!! Look at the hope, the despair, the anticipation, the weight and the ugliness of racism made invisible by the spirit of God, ushered in on Mahalia's voice! When I was growing up I remember the gospel de-jays would put this on some Sunday mornings, and it seemed like every house on our block came alive!! The drunkards, the midnight ramblers, the party people and the Christians were all touched and held captive by the anointed voice of Mahalia! Wow!

  • @vanqua1 Me Too with the problems in the world today, we all need some religion.

  • Dr. King gave his famed "I have a dream" speech that day, but it was Miss Jackson who stole the show!

  • Dr. King gave his famed "I have a dream" speech that day, but it was Miss Jackson who stole the show. I was there that day with my grandmother, and even though we were far in the rear, she electrified the entire gathering with her singing!

  • SING!!

  • MAHALIA JACKSON OWES ME 42.95!!!! SHE BURNED MY WIG SLAM UP WITH THIS PERFORMANCE! I AM BALD AS HELL NOW! THANK YA JESUS!

  • @hallsbstn: I really enjoyed reading your comments! Thanks!

  • @hallsbstn Well said. Be blessed!

  • She sounds like a lion roaring! In a good way.

  • @Refining1: She really does! That's one day where she was TRULY happy!

  • An important video in the history of America. I was too young to remember even seeing this, so I consider this my first time viewing it.

  • Powerful!

  • I wished their was more footage of her singing it..Cameraman should have kept it on her as she sang it..

  • @peculiarjazzj: I agree.

  • Oh man,she just brings on the annointing,Mahalia was deep,Im so glad the lord had her here to deliver his word throught song the way she did,I dont no anyway to delivery in such a fashion, thank you jesus, thank you.

  • Thats music to my ears. My Nana used to sing this song to me when I was a baby. I wish I could her sing this song one last time. Rest in peace to Mahalia Jackson and Martin Luther King. This is black history that will live on.

  • So powerful; very deep. I

  • Let me tell you why I am watching this, the library is about to close and I got like 3 minutes and I said "who can get me in the presence real quick in 3 minutes" and then I remembered, Mahalia Jackson does in in 2:20 at the March!

  • why wouldn't you allow embedding at least today. i'm sure many folks wanted to share this on facebook.

  • @alfcab: I apologize for just replying. Just checking my messages. When most of these videos were uploaded, like 2 yrs ago, I had placed the embedding restrictions there. Those years have passed quickly, and I don't remember which ones I've placed, if placed at all, so THAT'S why I didn't allow embedding. It's still never too late. I will remove the embedding code today. Enjoy! Thanks for stopping by.

  • Truly a Historic moment in the history of Gospel music.

  • Happy 47th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, August 28, 1963, to everyone! You, too, Rowoches!

  • Yeah, this definately needs to be released on dvd. It's so inspiring.

  • this my shit

  • she rocks

  • Is this performance on any dvd or something? Thats GREAT!

  • can you imagine being in that enviornment?.....Wow!....Mahalia Jackson brought it home!

  • Haley said "I got 2 minutes? Okay, watch me work in TWO minutes"!!!!!! My goodness!

  • RevTFrancis, your great gram's has/had Alzheimer, She was born Oct. 26 1911. She's gettin down with that hat. The Lord was with her.

  • THAT POWERFUL ANOINTED VOICE of Mahalia Jackson! "Many are Called, but FEW are Chosen...Many are gifted to sing, But FEW have GOD's Anointing. Its the Anointing that is GOD's Stamp of Approval & It Destroys the "Yoke of Bondage" off of peoples troubled lives! Mahalia WAS Chosen, & her Angelic Voice is Forever Eternal!

  • @MrsD7777 Typed in Mahalia Jackson by Marie Guillian. My mother is a huge fan. Be Blessed.

  • she was 64 years old she died in 1972

  • If you're referring to Mahalia, she was born in 1911, or as her tombstone says, 1912. She was either 60 or 61.

  • born in 1911.... you do the maths

  • The one and only at a once in a lifetime event. Thank you so much for posting.

  • I just wish it was better quality. Her voice is amazing, truely inspirational

  • You absolutely cannot feel sad listening to this.

  • Did yall notice that was Lena Horne at 1:33 looking mad as fire....she probably was....

  • She probably was hot! They say it was steaming that day!!! Then she just could've been in awe of Mahalia.

  • @lifeforce1986

Now why you gotta go talkin' about Lena?

  • @1joker88

lol I adore lena Horne one od my favorite women period BUT if you knew anything about her you'd know she was VERY angry during this period of her life

  • no one like her and there WILL NEVER BE anyone like her again.....and you can take that to the bank.

  • If that song was dirty...Sister Jackson just put it to soak, pre-wash, wash, rinse, extra-rinse, spin and hung it out to dry!!! MY LORD!!! HAVE MERCY!!!

  • What a voice...what a spirit! All glory to God for bringing us this far!

  • Why is it the artist of yesterday ... need I complete this question? The incomparable Mahalia Jackson, good music unites humanity! Maybe it's just me, but I cannot think of ONE modern-day gospel artist that is as moving as that then-66 year old woman's performance. Mahalia was ... excuse me, is ... divine!

  • Mahalia was 51 at the time of that 'performance'. Her birthdate was legally recorded as October 26, 1911 and the March on Washington took place on August 28, 1963. Other than that I WHOLE HEARTEDLY agree with everything you said. AMEN!!!

  • Thanx 4 the correct info BashaaniN!

  • i was told from my great gram she was born in 1901

  • She was definitely anointed but actually Mahalia never made it to the age of 66 she died at age 60.

  • The most beautiful voice of all times

    Peace and Love

    Mahalia forever

  • this says it all

  • Seeing this Video Made me Cry....Blk Male 46... and seeing and remember how far my family has come....... to let some Rag wearing Pants sagging Gang Slanging Punk try to reverse us back

  • thanks so much for sharing!she is amazing! All we need is to learn to listen to each other!no matter what is your colour, what language do you you speak, what are your values...ect.! all I can add is 2 words which are so true Peace&Love for everyone !!I am not from USA, I'm not even from english speaking country...but I do believe in human race!

  • Mahalia Jackson is the QUEEN!!!! I don't listen to gospel but i feel her music. Every word she utters i feel it. She was the best.

  • will everyone stop comparing obama to martin luther king jr please? Martin luther king junior and the civil rights movements was a true move of God....Obama winning the election was a media run event. I am all for a black president, but let's get real people. Thanks. And i love mahalia!

  • Well, I wish Mahalia had of lived(hypothetically in her prime)to sing at

the Obama inauguration yesterday because Aretha was not in good voice and her performance was lackluster at best!

I do understand that she represents a certain "historical element", but I was

left cold. I think Jill Scott, Ledisi, Yolanda Adams & Beyonce would've been much better. After all, OBAMA is representing the new & these 4 are the best of the new breed. **Honrable mention**

    Kelly Price & Jennifer Hudson

  • I'm not a big fan of Aretha, however, I will defend her. We're all entitled to our own opinions, in which I do respect you for, but I cannot be so critical of Aretha's performance. She was not at her best, but considering the weather and how cold it was, I believe she did her best.

  • I agree with the part about the weather, because cold is a singer's worst enemy.

I also figure in the age & vocal wear factor. I hope I didn't come off as too critical of Aretha because she was "the truth" in her day, and has been able to muster some remarkable moments in her post hey-dey career, but I guess I just expected her to kill it! (-: Even the arrangement of the song was lackluster to me. But let me hush because I know the "ARETHA-ITES" will be coming for me with torches & pitchforks!

  • yes please don't bring them o'er her'!

  • No we ain't going come looking for blood we love mahalia and would never disrespect but i got to disagree about the her arrangment being lackluster i think it was amazing her she arranged the song sure it wasn't her best but she is 66 years old.

  • Well i think Aretha did her best and her best is still amazing at 66. Sure her voice ain't what it use to be but you got to remember that along with Mahalia her music was a reflection on the Civil Rights Movement back in the day and that she was very close with Dr. King. Her voice is not what it use to be. i wish Aretha had never smoked her voice would had been in better shape but overall i think Aretha did an amazing job and she did the country proud.

  • I agree with you...for 66 she did her best.

And at this point it's what Aretha represents...a direct link to the ancestors who started the fight for civil rights and who had the dream that we have seen come to fruition some 50 yrs later! (-:

BTW, today commemorates the 37th Anniversary of Mahalia's passing.

    (01/27/1972) R.I.P. Halie!!

  • While the fighting goes on in other forams more directly related to Obamas inaugaration I have come here to say congratulations to all American people who may read this. I gotta tell you that as a brown skined person living in a small country at the bottom of the southern hemisphere I have often been very critical of the way your great country has abused it's power and influence.

  • thank you for the grats bird,!! I pray O can heko take us back to the place we once were, maybe even better. I have to admit I don't have any "brown" skin in me but Native American, but I have been poor and looked down on in my life ,worked into respected and successful, now pretty much just disregarded, except for my Great GOd and Christian husband and good family . I have to tell you in defense of the average US citizen, we are limited and controlled by those in power via the media, most

  • of all the time consuming task of working and taking care of family. Blessedly the young have seen more with media ex the net. about" washington" and are making more intelligent decisions. I just recently come to know the happenings of the 60's. I have been watching Mahalia Jackson--How I got over LIVE, performed in a church before O even spoke at the Dem convention o4, due to it's powerful spiritual "lifting" quality. I love Mahalia Jackson. That version starts out shaky but is fantastic .

  • Thank you for the well wishes, I wrote you another reply , it is posted.

thank YOU Rowoches for posting! I was a child in the 60's didn't know anything about the goings on. Now, I have learned a lot due to specials on TV about MLK and the other hardships. I think we as a nation are taking our pride back regardless of the color of the skin in the whitehouse. But I think /hope/pray under Obama and future leadership, we can achieve the American dream together. I'm trusting 4 a happier future!

  • But today as I watched your 44th President being sworn in, I, like so many around the world, caught a glimps of why America is great. Today America you have chosen hope and I pray that as we go into the future you will once again use all the gifts God has given you to lead this world so that soon we can all look back and say "we were cryin' in the midnight hour" but, thank God Almighty, now "my soul looks back in wonder at how we got over"

  • What's wrong the with picture is simple? We have a bunch of entertaining artists, but little if any anointed artists!

  • Please Lord, I hope somebody sing this at the inauguation! Aretha, Shirley, somebody!

  • So, JFK chose MAHALIA to sing at his inauguration..Many decades later, the country's first black president, Barack Obama, chooses BEYONCE to sing at his inauguration? What's wrong with this picture?

Anyways, THIS is the live version of this song I'd love to have! I've seen other performers version of this song on youtube (Patti, Aretha..), but nobody does this song better!

  • Such an uplifting and historical moment....so amazing to see blacks and whites together on one accord, fighting for one freedom to share one world, and believing in one God. So amazing......there was so much power back then...

  • mahalia JACKSON SANG THE STINK OFF THAT SONG OH MY SHE TORE IT UP

  • Yall see Lena Horne at 1:34....

  • The World's Greatest Gospel Singer...Truly

  • Truly wonderful.

  • She sang it on August 28, 1963 at the Capitol Mall in Washington, DC, but it was a voice heard, clear and strong, around the world.

  • This is my favorite footage of Mahalia. As Brother Joe May would say, "SANG CHIRRUN!"

  • Wow ! that was amazing ! she sings this with so much power ! Love it

  • MAGNIFICENT! With her ecstatic growls Mahalia set the crowd up for Martin Luther King, who followed her. And church pro that she was, when he started to wander from the topic, she hollered out, "Martin, tell them about the dream." The rest is American history, and Mahalia Jackson helped write it. Talk about rocking a house!

  • "I Been Buked" was before Dr. King gave his "I Have A Dream" speech, and then Mahalia came back after that with "How I Got Over" and killed 'em. Both songs set Dr. King up perfectly and made a magical moment in American history even more magical!

  • Hailey sung that song that day! Great footage!
