  • I have the shortest attenttion span of all time and this band is killer!!!!!!!!!

  • hello all and this was my 1st and most profound and fave in 76 . out of all the progressive i'd heard, this just took me to a different area. ..smokin leaves and whatever. iffin' you know what i mean. good times!

  • Wow I always loved Phil Collins... never realized he had all this other work! This stuff is great thanks for adding it to Youtube!

  • I'll never forget listening to this. I was on the road with a country cover band in flyspec Ohio...

  • 2 people were in fact born ugly. :-)

  • Phil came into big demands ,thats why Brandx was a a project status band ,Phil put together a fine fusion group here ,Im enjoying the band as I listen to stuff I never got to hear before

  • thats not what happened. He didn't put this band together, don't know where you got that from

  • @people4people well whoever put it together . after,Phils departure,, I never heard of em again

  • @GrooveDoctor77 yeah its a shame

  • Loved this when it came out.

  • i want to listen more music like between 2:10 - 3:00

help me, give me some names of artists and songs.

  • saw them in the early 80s at the Bottom Line n NYC. X and Weather Report are the two greatest fusion bands ever

  • @wkassinfla can't disagree they are both incredibly stunning. However,I would put "Return to Forever" on the top podium. Chick , Al , Lenny, and Stanley.Talent wise, I would compare them as Fusion Jazz's answer to Prog Rock's Yes. God Bless the entire musical talent of all creative geniuses and those who strive to be the best. also check out band "Air" and Brazilian artist , Egberto Gismonti. Enjoy!

  • Masterpiece...

  • I grew up diggin' this !

  • Maybe I am stating the obvious (I don't normally post or even read the commentary on these videos), but if you are new to this music and really like it, I would suggest you check out some stuff by Al DiMeola, John McLauglin and Jean-Luc Ponty. The first two are two of the greatest guitarists in the world, while JLP is a violinist. All feature bands with some of the finest musicians to be found anywhere.

  • This is AWESOME!

  • Great bass!

  • literally its my song: BORN FOKIN UGLY!!!! HAHAHA excellent piece

  • My favorite album!

Phil Collins played the best at that time!

  • Zeitlos....Hammeralbum.....

  • I wish someone would upload Euthanasia Waltz - their BEST song imo. thanks

  • @Freenetnow uhh...my bad. just found it.

  • I love this album, can anyone recommand any opther fusion albums similar to this one?

  • @seb2112 maybe you already got them, if not check out Bill Bruford´s "one of a kind" and "feels good to me". Great albums.

  • @mtaygoldin I already have feels good to me, the instrumentals are awesome, but the song with the vocalist are aweful. One Of A Kind I just cant get into for some reason

  • @electroexecutee Oh yeah... keep it up... please... =-D

  • @electroexecutee grow up

  • Comment removed

  • Speaking of "born ugly", anyone remember "ugly duckling" from "peter and the wolf"? "Marscape" also. ALL GREAT STUFF!

  • @hubiex Hell yeah - that "Peter & the Wolf" album was way different.

  • Acid, farms, strings and drums . . . yeah!

  • Takes me back. Thx for uploading.

  • With awesome music like this you never need vocals....!!

    Purely incredible talents.....!!!!

  • Also a bonus were the very witty sleeve notes including ;-

Produced by Dennis Mackay who was produced by Mrs mackay.

  • he's still been behind the drums recently.

he was at montreaux jazz festival a little while ago i think.

  • I used to try and emulate the bass player, Percy Jones, but obviously that's impossible.

  • Jones kicks so much ass

but IMHO, Stanley Clarke is better

  • For a musician fusion is like useing your brain more than usual playing cause of the mix of all styles being put together, its like musical aerobics for your body and mind

  • whatever happened to Phil Collins... he was such a great drummer...

  • He washed his big talent as a drummer, with his solo pop and Genesis..lol

  • well it was obviously more lucrative... He is a great singer... but to "broadway" for lack of a better term...

I'm sure it doesn't bother him at night that people like us know the talented drummer he was... and remark that he should have stayed behind the drums... LOL

After all... who doesn't want to be the lead singer?

  • Good points. Collins' situation was interesting: Though not the singer of Gabriel's level, Phil did have his showmanship as Genesis' front man, perhaps stemming from his experience (since childhood) in acting, so stepping up after Gabriel's exit may have been more natural than one thinks -- a happy accident for the label execs, who weren't about to fix what wasn't broken. Now, if Phil were to generally sing AND stay behind the drums, a la the Eagles' Don Henley, then you'd have your wish.

  • @tanner9862 Oh I think they are both great singers in their own right... I of course hedge my bets with gabriel because he can do things with his voice that few can... probably one of the most emotional singers out there... but collins has some great vocal chops...

Not sure how effective he would have been doing both... I think that's why he stepped away from the drums... but let's keep in mind who first replaced him... bill bruford... that says a lot...

  • well with genesis 80 + cause when he was playing with Gabriels and hackett he was amazing too

  • right!

  • I can't belive someone actually clicked on the tumb down for this comment!!

what you say it's absolutely true!! and what happened to him... that's karma men... I'm telling you

  • @chyrd He quit drumming because of a pinched nerve in his neck. Made it impossible to grip his sticks anymore, apparently. I saw Genesis in concert years ago with Chester Thompson on drums full-time but Phil would occasionally jump into his kit for extra drumming goodness. His kick pedal was a strange contraption that required him to strap something up onto his upper calf or something. I've never seen any other drummer with a similar setup.

  • @chyrd but hes not dead yet...

  • @vbierry yeah but even he knows that he's not the drummer he once was... a couple of years ago, he went to see the Musical Box, and played with them for one song... after he got off the stage he stated he couldn't believe how difficult some of his old playing really was... He said he had a very difficult time keeping up with the rest of the band...

  • @chyrd hmm ok my bad I didnt know that ;)

  • @chyrd he sustained a back injury had to quit playing, became disillusioned with music and pondered suicide... I wish I was joking... poor Phil.

  • This was a very important album when it came out. Jazz was rubbing up against rock and the two forces were being discovered as one.

Highly technically proficient players are required for it and it shows.

The only problem Brand X ever had was that the listener must have a reasonably long attention span. Most people don't and that's why they didn't reach a giant audience. It can be an acquired taste...

    Peace

    Doug

  • For bokamaru: I see a couple of factors. The Gabriel + Collins incarnation of Genesis was not stylistically mainstream, was often in "magnum opus" territory, yet was lucrative as well as critically lauded. The very intensively instrumental prog bands (e.g., Happy The Man) fared less well. Brand X, then, might have profited commercially from a charismatic lead vocalist. One can imagine it "stealing" Peter away as a jazz-rock progressive vocalist ahead of Phil's own singing ascendance.

  • @bokamaru . Hi. I so agree with you. It takes skilled and profound musicians to write this music as well as "skilled and profound" listener to recognize and fully appreciate it. I have just discovered this album recently and it educating me already how to listen , what to hear and eventually how to express it all on as a player..

  • this album opened my innocent eyes to how utterly groovy phil collins could be - my friend, about 20 years older said 'guess who's drumming on this?' I couldn't believe it. Nuclear Burn was just rocked my world! I met Robin Lumley and told him - he gave me monitor recordings of a gig in LA! Ace geezer

  • i dont like fusion , but this is swinging like hell !

  • סאחטיין !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow this talk about drummers....

did ya'll forget about mitch mitchell?.. i guess ya' did,.. he was alot more free then Bonzo... I'm just sayin..

  • Did I miss something? This was the first tune to get me into Brand X and Percy Jones bass style is the shit PERIOD! Secondly I love Bonzo but he can't swing or put soul into those feels like this drummer did! I sworn it was Phil Collins or Narrada Michael Walden but none the less it made me respect Phil's drumming way more than Genesis era and it's FUNKY

  • This song is a little Bass heavy. Otherwise pretty good though.

  • there are many drummers with better chops, technique, dynamics and overall sound than bonzo ever had. just my opinion.

  • Just had an interesting thought....I'll bet John Bonham would have played these drum parts so well. After all, he was much the inspiration for most of fusion drum artists especially back in those days.

  • Not to belittle Bonzo, but most fusion drummers listened alot to jazz drummers..Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Billy Cobham etc..

  • Yep, you're definitely right about that. For the rock rhythms, though, Bonham was pretty much leading the way back then. I'm trying to think of who else might have been leading the way with "rock" back then. Led Zep only comes to mind at the moment. If I remember correctly, Cobham was primarily playing with Weather Report which to me was kind of a lame attempt at "fusion". However, I have to admit that I didn't give Weather report much of a chance. Just didn't do much for me.

  • Cobham did not play with Weather Report. He played with John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra.

  • Ooops! You're right. The cassettes I had for both groups sounded essentially the same to me. I suppose I should dig out that old music and give it another listen.

Thanks for the dialog....Its good to chat with someone that knows music.

  • Weather Report's brand of fusion is commonly overlooked because of the prominent "cheesy" keyboard sounds that Joe Zawinul commonly used. You have to hear the right songs, and then you kind of get where he's coming from with his compositions.

Check out Elegant People, Herandu, Gibraltar, all off of Black Market. That was their defining album in my opinion.

  • Hmmm, Bill bruford was a great drummer at this time and at all times,

  • He's always been one of my favorites; very key to drumming history.

  • Very special sound. i like the cover also. Brand X is much better than 7 x

  • Bonzo didn't even know what fusion was!

  • I'd be a bit surprised if that was true, as fusion was well on its way by the time John passed....but who knows the mind of another person....

  • It was an off the cuff remark. I really meant that it was a style that was quite antithetical to Zep's music at the time. I've got a lot of time for Bonzo's drumming but so I have for others too. Bruford, Cobham, Lenny White etc etc

  • Donewithmirrors......

No kidding! These guys we're so inventive and really helped to lead the whole concept of how to meld both rock and jazz. It amazes me that the "world" doesn't recognize Brand X as a top 5 influential group that primarily shaped and molded advanced Western music as it is today (along these lines). Phil was so inventive on drum!

  • my favorite fusion band! They should do something together again - with Phil ;P

  • &fmt=18

add that to the end of the URL for a stereo experience=huge difference!!!

  • Wooah, cheers man!

  • THE WHOLE BRAND X EXPERIENCE ,GREAT STUFF ! troglatite

  • Es gibt ein Leben nach "Los Endos"

  • still have the vinyl put away at my moms house, i was not old enough to buy it at the time it came out, had to pay a fair price from record collectors for do they hurt, morrocan roll, livestock, i love these dudes, i got into em looking into Crimson and looked up belew and then i was hooked.

  • Brandtastic!! They were the best. Oh, and Gentle Giant. :)

  • You're the man

  • No...U weren't the Only One who owned the album. Bought it in mid '70's. Also Morrocan Roll, Shades, Live Stock, Do They Hurt

  • I saw them my freshman year in 1977 here in Cincinnati. Kenwood Denard was the drummer but the rest of the guys were there. I hung out with them in the dressing room. Poor guys!!

  • Wow, I thought i was the only one who owned this album. Great taste!

  • No you're not! I agree!

  • Outstanding!

  • Wow! Never expected to find some BX stuff here...still know every single note(after 30 Years)lol - thx for uploading!

  • Bought this album straight off the turntable at the record store way back when

  • mamma mia percy jones fa dei passaggi paurosi col basso....da brivido

  • i love the synthesizer at the end

    keep the jazz coming

  • my favorite fusion album too...

  • great fusion album and shows the diversity of phil collins

  • my favorite "fusion" album ever.

    LOVE Euthanasia Waltz.

    And Collin's drum work.

  • Yeah, Unorthodox Behavior is a hell of an album. Percy Jones + John Goodsall = win. Phil Collins and Robin Lumley are good as well.

  • @JazzFusionLover Percy Jones=THE man. I strained to learn the songs on "Product" when I started to play bass (well after I'd been at it four or five years, anyway :) ). Really one of the most wonderful bassists ever, along with my other favorites, Victor Wootten, Jaco Pastorius, Tony Levin, and Mark King.
