How did this movie not do better? It's one of the greatest movies in recent times.

Maybe most people thought it was going to be another typical "tom cruise" movie?

Yet, Tom Cruise was outstanding in this film and so was Penelope Cruz - actually I think it must have been the real chemistry between the two that halped make their peformances unusally good.

I would like to understand the dynamics behind how such a great film could be bashed by critics and ignored by moviegoers.

Was it just a case of highly unfortunate timing? Did the producers do something to offend the critics?
