I wish they had released this out of Japan. I just beat Dragon Quest VIII today and I LOVE it. It is AWESOME. The story, while kinda cliché and basic, is full of really great moments and characters and never becomes OTT and conveluded (like most Final Fantasys (hey, I like that though. Final Fantasy > Dragon Quest). Did anyone else expect the Hero to speak at the end though, like in the original Dragon Quest? That surprised me so much... I wish he had...
