The problem with field athletics is there are no weight or height divisions... the throwers are all ridiculously muscular/fat, just huge... the jumpers are long and lean like sausage dogs... they r freaks and normal ppl cant relate to them.. at least in boxing and weightlifting one can train and get there, but unless your built like a freak, most field events are beyond most people. It's a real pity. There would be way more interest if this was like running or tennis or soccer, a doable sport.

At athletics on the wknds here in Melbourne, Australia, we only have family come and watch. It's rare even for friends to come along, like say at the local football. And most of the people who comment do so with authority; they've experienced it. Most of middle or distance runners don't bother with the field events after having competed...

I competed in the shot put once, with one guy (some 120kg monster!) and of course he mauled me, but I knew instantly that it is pointless for me to learn the spin, power up, cos the reason for no-one entering it is that there are very few ppl that big who are into playing sport...

High jump, long and triple jumps, the real competitors all look ridiculous, long and lean. I'm not blaming the athletes, but like you say in boxing, I mean, you're right: imagine the thousands of guys and now girls, who wudv not boxed if there were no weight divisions. This is field athletics!

@Kokainuser Yes, I'm 33, I weigh 73kg/160lb and am 173cm/5'8. I run 3k stpl, 3k and 5k, at about 4min/km, very avg. I blv with hard work I can get to 3.20/km and be cptv at B or C level in my city comp. But if I'd put effort in yrs ago, maybe I cudv bin Olympic material; I'll never know. But no matter what, I cud neva hav bin any good at jumping or throwing. There's an attitude in athletics that you do the event for your body type. All the jumpers are tall skinny types; all the throwers hulks.

@JamesBoy4LifeMan4Luv It would be impossible to create categories in high jump or other field sports based on height/weight etc. More important than height itself in this sport is length of the bones, tendons, muscle fiber types analogy (fast twitch over slow twitch) etc. E.g a tall person doesn't mean NECESSARILY it will have proportionally to his height long legs, neither a mediocre height person will have porportionally to his height mediocre length legs but could have ridiculously long ones

Yet, if height and weight divisions (jumping and throwing respectively) are not implemented, field athletics will remain a curious circus act. Kokainuser's experience: he was great at hammer throwing, but due to weight classes (boxing, weightlifting) he had to compete against monster freaks. Field athletics is just an amusing side-show as a result.

What chance would Vlacic have to train for weightlifting with her incredibly long arms/thin bones? It's about leverage

Although fighting sports like boxing leave more space for "ordinary" people due to the fact each body structure has both advantages and disadvantages
