You actually happen to be relatively cute, thanks a ton for your video clip. it is actually depressing i'm located within Walnut Grove due to the fact i can not receive quality cosmetics, however i get no fee cosmetic samples through "GratismakeupSamples". i love Maybelline cosmetics!
This videoclip satisfies all the needs of a learner of English struggling with the question tags. It is so comprehensive, so spectacular. I admire your side ramarks on the left-hand-side as well. The colours, pics and sentences are so well selected to emphasize the essence of this grammatical phenomenon. 8 and a half minutes pleasure on question tags!!!!! Congratulations!
You're welcome. I have also put additional material for this video at my website. Follow the links in the video description, or click the Linguaspectrum logo at the top of the page.
I normally avoid using tag questions because of the difficulty:) But now that I have seen this information, it is clearer. However, Richard, I am confused in these two sentences: Why: "I suppose they have eat, don't they?" instead of (I would have said) "I suppose they have eaten, haven't they?"
In "I am a teacher, aren't I? , why "aren't" for "I"?
Thank you for this post. You are they best, aren't you? :)
Hi and thanks for your comments. Thanks also for pointing out the typo in "I suppose they have ___ eat, don't they?" It should of course say, I suppose they have to eat, don't they? I have added an annotation to correct this error. So much information and my brain just didn't pick this one up. I guess you are the best, not me, aren't you?
As for "I am a teacher..." we could actually say, "am I not?" for the negative question tag, but as question tags are informal we use "aren't I?" This is odd, isn't it? We have contracted forms for all negatives in the verb to be except I am - you aren't, s/he isn't, we aren't, they aren't - but we don't have I amn't!
English doesn't like the two nasal consonants m and n next to each other. In some Scottish and Irish dialects the word amn't does exist, so they might well say "I am a teacher, amn't I?" My dialect forbids it, but allows "ain't" in very informal speech. I might say, I'm a teacher, ain't I?" but I'm more likely to say "aren't I?"
