I think I know why, your deadly snakes are so well behaved most of the time. Its because of that sweetheart of a voice you have and the way you talk to them.
I bet all the snakes you have don't attack you because I think they're saying "I love this guy when he feeds me and I don't have to waste energy for my prey"
If I ever encounter a fairy my third wish will be that she makes viperkeeper immune to all venom for one day and just handle his specimens freely for his liking. I just have to think up the first two now (suck up: done, regret: none)
@daydream91 They inject venom (modified spit) through their fangs. They can also express venom under pressure to shoot it out their fangs, causing the "spitting" behavior.
oh ok, venomousness interest me, i own only non-venomousness reptiles thus far. I would like to get into it eventually but defiantly not anytime soon. Need alot more experience. If i do decided to get one years down the road what would you suggest, should i get a venomousness that is in the area i live in case im bitten?
Al, do you use any sort of eye protection? If I may recommend (as drastic as it sounds) you may want to invest in a riot helmet, many of my friends have used such as a method of not getting hit, as it has only one vulnerable point, which would be near the bottom.
I love that particular waglers of yours, you've got yourself a beautiful specimen! The eye on it and the stunning green color of the head and the triangular shaped head reminds me of some praying mantids from certain angles of filming.
I'm considering keeping a Wagler's. All my research thus far indicates that their venom is relatively mild. Has anyone you know been tagged by one? So far I haven't come across any systemic envenomation, just cases with local swelling. Thanks.
No, I don't know anyone tagged by a wag... I read a study in the book "Sankes of Sulawaesi" Included 50 bites by Wags...Just local effects except for one.
Hey Al ! i was just wondering i saw Steve Irwin get spat on by a spitter on the cheek and he just wiped it off and moved the cobra away. How is that so?
3 ft (~1 meter) size is about as big as they get. They have huge heads and long fangs but the venom is not terrably toxic to humans. They are also known as "temple vipers and are kept in temples and are mild tempered. That was a newborn.
Man now I want a Waglers Viper as much as a Rhino Viper, hmmm. Lol, but those Asian Black & White Spitters pattern excluding the head and neck looks similar to some Garter Snakes I used to catch, but just the pattern would be reversed Lol.
That is extremely dangerous for several reasons. The obvious being venom can get into the eyes through sweat (even with safety glasses on)...If venom got into any mucas membranes, then it can be just as dangerous as a bite, and exposure to venom through such membranes may bring on Anaphylaxis following a bite. Also venom may get onto the walls...and dried venom has the same effect if breathed in, exposure can bring on Anaphylaxis which can kill in a matter of minutes. Dangerous stuff to do buddy
The B&W spitters are adorable! They're as alert as the mambas and as curious as the king. Coupled with their beautiful appearance they're fantastic little snakes.
Al, I don't see how you can bear to let the spitters go (I'd want to keep them - they seem cute and sweet) I'm sure you have to distance yourself (Emotionally) from the ones that are just passing through, and on to other destinations.I can't wait to see the Bushmaster, Is it a large adult? Also is it headed for a Zoo, or is it a Keeper? I'm sorry, I'm just so excited about finally getting to see the Bushmaster at the ViperKeeprs lair, seeing how it's one of my most favorite snakes.Cheers, ~ Lee
I think I'll start 2010 off with the Bushmaster video. I got some great "Bushmaster cam" of the male. They are CBB 07's and one CBB 09, sadly they are not staying for long. They were aquired for a breeding project with a friend who has the room and experience with this species.

@rrredzzz uhh no.All snakes have different temperments and personalities

There is no such thing as a "safe" or "safest" venomous snake.
Dispholidus typus is a rear-fanged snake and will kill you, without a doubt.

I don't know specifically. I would guess it's one of the cytotoxins found in their venom.
