I have a stupid question, but could anyone just tell me the reason why APU couldn't run for power after 2 engines died, was that because APU consumes fuel? Thanks everyone.
Intresting how I worked out that in some way everyone even the most lightly involeved from the stunned moterists to the two people who saved the life of the pilot are somewhat heros
I have found after watching these episodes that the competence and professionalism of the aircrew can make all the difference between life and death in an airplane accident.
I am not surprised that Airbus threw these pilots under the bus and blamed them- it seems to be their habit. The French refuse to acknowledge that their "computerized everything" planes can sometimes be confusing, and go against a pilot's express commands. The one GOOD thing the invented was the RAT- the ram-air-turbine (the little prop that dropped down) which gave them SOME electric & hydraulic power. No hydraulics and they definately would have crashed.
@FastGreenFCF for some reason the apu doesn't have a dedicated fuel tank, probably a great thing to think about since it would only need to be a few gallons.
'How can qualified mechanics make such mistakes?' I have seen stories of qualified surgeons forgetting pairs of scissors inside the patient and none of the doctors noticed, only showed up on x-ray or when the the patient's grave was opened years later, so, don't trust anyone 100%
@yankee22167: Not that simple. The managers are promoted from the ranks of the maintenance people; they know the problems. Their job is to make sure the equipment is ready to fly. What they don't know, and no one is likely to tell them until too late, is the engineering decisions which make some substitutions risky. If you think substitutions are rare, think again. They substituted a whole engine; what are the risks in that? Obviously they found one of them. Their job is real too.
@chazflyz yea but he landed on river which is not as rough to land as sea with waves. But yeah yes its possible to land on WATER without breaking tail off.
@MrRazorblade999: SOP. The brakes could have started a fire, if there hadn't been one before the landing. You got them stopped on the runway; it would be a terrible thing if the died of smoke inhalation there. And that has happened.
shit fuck like they couldn't re-drill the holes in the bracket or something even a freaking little redneck fix up would of worked like put rubber hose and wrap it in duct tape even if the two lines rob but it wouldn't abrade the fuel line much at least not to the point of it leaking
@volodymyrm1: Certainly they could have done something like that if they'd known the failure that the change was going to cause. As the narrator said, the difference was 3 mm; a hair over a tenth of an inch. You couldn't drill separate holes that close together. And jet engines are something you don't want to be introducing more parts into. Red neck fixes are frowned upon, for good reasons.
This episode has a striking similarity to that of Air Canada 143. Air Canada also suffered fuel starvation and both (this and Air Canada), fortunately came out of the crisis safely. Pals, check the plane always before flying them.
@bvestationfan I watched every single one of these and it made me so interested in aviation, I'm on my way to get my private pilot's license. So far 11 hours in the air and counting!
lol why do they always get dumbass people to make comments like "I ran down the slide incase the plane blew up" it was out of fuel dumbass, what would catch fire?
lol why do they always get dumbass people to make comments like "I ran down the slide incase the plane blew up" it was out of fuel dumbass, what would catch fire? I didn't read anywhere that the captain had picked up the microphone to make an announcement informing the passengers that he had run out of fuel. All the passengers knew at that time was that the engines had stopped working, they didn’t know why. So your comment about the “dumbass” is really not valid.
@pbrew85 Simple, there was not enough fuel for that reached the engines but, that doesn't mean there is no more. There is mostly always a little bit left
uum... no, the natator is wrong, the 767 did not enter wings level, thus that was not a controlled water landing, as the hijacker turned the controlls at the last minute. however, a controlled water landing is very easily survivable, take the hudson river landing with the us airways a320 for example...
@jaffacake1578 Yeah it is, but they seem o be very hard to do. If the Hudson river was wild because of a storm or something similar to that, then they wouldn't. Because if it's not perfect it can be horrible
@MrMaxxer25 actually, you'd be surprised. there was a dc-9 that smashed into giant waves in the ocean while ditching, but the plane stayed in one piece, most survived, some didn't because they weren't wearing a seatbelt...
@joesabido: One never knows. There was no oxygen available; a fire caused by a abused brake could have killed a number of people with smoke inhalation sitting on the runway. You don't take chances; getting the people off is SOP.

if you want to make heroes out of pilots, then look up united airlines 232
@somnus71 Pilots don't sign up for an airline just to sit in the cockpit incase something goes wrong with the advanced computer systems used. They are trained to fly the craft, and trained to deal with emergencies that shouldn't happen. I suppose that the pilots that landed a plane in the hudson river were just doing their jobs aswell huh??
You've got no intelligence dude, Even people that are trained to deal with a specific situation are Heroes if they do it right.
@Dragonwarrior1701: Personally, I would say that Schallenburger's landing on the Hudson was a masterpiece of flying. But what made Schallenburger a hero wasn't his flying, but his insistence to personally make sure every person was off the plane before he got out; that must have taken real brass in a dark, sinking airplane, and that is the definition of heroism, not displaying the skills you learned to get your job.
i just can't believe them airline companies nowadays, i mean just to save time for saving cash, they would easily jeopardize people's lives & lead them to inevitable danger, & pilots? treated like dog robots, by having to obey their oath rules, have to think not twice but 10 times before even thinking of life guarding their passengers with the appropriate procedures, afraid of getting punished & lose their career fined to the butt, which in return, puts them facing such a tragedy!!!
@s6xer: Easy to say. Do you own any stock? What would you say to the company management if they'd cancelled the flight for the lack of an engine, costing the company a million in lost fares, schedule problems and bad PR? Would you have rewarded them by buying more stock? What's your assessment of how the other stock owners would handle that, if it happened too often?
pilot is a hero but as far as i remember make a mistake too!!! opening the crossfeed valves was a big huge mistake if the pilot dont do it they will make a emergency landing with 1 engine running which will me more easy to land
Classic case of airlines choosing Economics VS Safety. Waiting for engine parts meant taking that plane out of service which would lose them revenue. So, they try to wing it with old spare parts to hold it up until the new parts come. It's essentially like using duct tape to fix a hole. And they under estimate how serious those decisions are. And the sad thing is, this probably happens more than we'd like it to, but theirs nothing we can do as passengers.
@SuperEd311: Or rather, there is something you can do as stockholders. Call the company's directors up, tell them this story, and tell them you'll reward their dedication to safety by personally absorbing costs they incur in maintaining absolute safety standards. Then back it up. Be prepared to loose your shirt.
@Th3R3alPr0: Boeing's first passnger jet was the Boeing 707, not on of the first prop planes ever manufactured. Plus the 707 was brought out in the late 1950s not the 40s when it was unheard of. Plus, they dont even fly the 707 anymore only in the occaisonal military or tanker flight.
Pilot Error, I hate that! The Computer is mostly always right! but some old planes such as Boeing 247 (First Boeing Passenger Jet 1940s) and do you think the Computer is still alive? 70 Years.......
In the face of death, these guys remained cool, calm and collected. Sign of being a confident pilot. I can't believe the team work in the cock pit. It's amazing.
The fuel leak was actually inevitable - and was the fault of the maintenance supervisor. Eventually one of their pilots would have had it to handle. This one did an amazing job reaching land... and getting it down w/o power & only blowing 8 tyres [Force = mass x acc]. His weakness as a pilot was retreating into denial when flight started to go pear shaped, and staying in it despite the junior attempts of his co-pilot to insist there was a problem... Glad they're still airborne; fly me any day.
Pilots should be like Astronauts. They are supposed to have The Right Stuff. They are supposed to keep their cool and troubleshoot the aircraft. These guys where working with limited information. They should have been able to check the maintenance log during the preflight briefing. On the whole I think they did the right thing in the end given the information they had. This story reminds me of British Airways flight 9.
Airbus's fault moslty- computer assisted aircraft which always creates a doubt in the minds of pilots because computers can't be trusted 100% !!!
Captain's fault too for not heeding his first officer's warnings and the computer warnings. In the end a warning is a warning, whether true or false - better to be safe than sorry !!
using high speed landing to blow off the tires is a great idea for a brand new braking system :D .. simply the airplanes manufacturers and remove the heavy spoilers mechanism, the thrust reverser mechanism and the landing gear braking mechanism which leads a lighter airplane with a longer range a less fuel consumption .. but they must take into account the cost of the tires :P :P :P
would it be that dark in the cabin? there is the emergency lights that come on when AC power goes off. They're there so that you can see your way to the exit in a crash
haha i cant help it.. "in the Number 2 Engine on the Right Handside of the Plane" - And the Camera Zooms out the Left Hand Side Window.. (All Passenger Seats Face Forward)
Ive said this before is you took all the air crashes of real planes Since the Wright Brothers & include all the Military Planes Lost From All Over The World. Would Not Even = America's National Road Toll For 5 Years. And im talking number of planes lost versus cars lost not lives.. But even then there might be 20 times the people on planes but there is 10,000 Times the car accidents. Per year.
People who want to be a pilot, do it! Don't be scared! Because if they had made a Car Crash Investegation, than 1000 times more video's would be uploaded, and you would be scared to. Life is dangerous. Life without dangerous is boring.
I have a stupid question, but could anyone just tell me the reason why APU couldn't run for power after 2 engines died, was that because APU consumes fuel? Thanks everyone.

My salute to the captains for saving the lives of 300+ People and landing the pplane safely.

Transat is a shocking airline... charging ppl for more then 5kg of carryon.. lts only time before this happens again
RealUFOs2009 7 months ago
after loozing engine nr 1 the pilot still was thinking of an computer bug , wat a bad pilot i recon , he was lucky to save all these people

This story reminds me of British Airways flight 9.

they always blame the pilots!! thats stuped!!!

@MegaGuitar87 who caused all this?the airplain maintanence people!!
MrSoccerfanatic1 7 months ago
ironically, the lack of fuel lengthened the distance that the plane could glide
jfsa380 7 months ago
after questioning the fuel, they should have closed the crossfeed valve, instead, they might as well have opened the fuel dump valves

Full rates because that was just amazing

I liked the captain of this plane, by his patience and endurance, he could land the plane safely.
Indeed he did a big mistake when he ignored the computer alerts.

@thekinaesthetic: You mean you liked the actor that played the captain? They all look so good, don't they?

This proves that is is almost never one persons fault, normally a load of things that just happen to come together to cause an accident.

Still.... I like Airbus more than Boeing but both have it flaws
TheCrazy135 8 months ago
lol although this is a great show it is also unrealistic.
At 04:27 airbus took off with flaps 0. the plane would have stall and crash just after take off.
kest32 8 months ago

They're there so that you can see your way to the exit in a crash

so, the maintenance was on the 17th, but the description says the flight was on the 24th? How is that 5 days?

You do not take chances replacing parts!
Lack of professionalism on the part of the Canadian Engineer that told the mechanic to replace it.
A phone call to RR would of confirm if part was compatable.
This is very common in the Canadian industry time to do a job is more important than safety.

Per year.

the Captain looks like Jeremy Irons

People who want to be a pilot, do it! Don't be scared! Because if they had made a Car Crash Investegation, than 1000 times more video's would be uploaded, and you would be scared to. Life is dangerous. Life without dangerous is boring.
