Second, there is a difference in killing people randomly and wanting to exterminate a group of people based on whatever. Living in a dangerous country and living in a country where your mere existence is against the lay, there is actually jail time for giving you a place to live and death penalty just for the way you were born are two very different things and if you think about it I'm sure you can agree to that .
First of all, doing something doesn't have to mean bringing troops. In this case the petition worked, at least for now. They know the world is watching and that does make a difference sometimes. Just look at the work Amnesty international does, writing letters and petitions is the method they use and they have saved countless lives that way.
And in the end there you say "killing gays vs. killing people", just to be clear, you do know gays are people right?
Just letting you all know the petition did have 1.4 million signatures and they blocked the bill twice because of it. They won't be voting for this bill until the next session which is years from now. I think it's safe to say that petitions do actually work.
America is giving them money for this ??? & Uganda has all kinds of stupid laws you can die for..if they did that stuff in America majority of us would die lol but this is a horrible situation. My Petition is in prayer
trade embargoes were going to be put in place and international financial aid was going to stop if they were to follow through. which theyre not. because of the reaction they received from the rest of the world. because of the 1.4 million people worldwide that signed the petitions.
After long invesigating of the laws of Uganda I have would like to say in my defence, On June 14th 2003 officers arrested Nsangi Murisidi age 29 on suspicions that he had facilitated to commit robbery, Relitives tryed in vain to visit him in detention, on June 18th 2003 a lawyer representing the family was informed he was put to death, and the Death on cheating on a spouse had been done away with as of 2009 so it wasn't that long ago you could if found guilty and court ordered
In conclusion yeah the RIGHT thing to do would be to sign the petition. But its gonna be Iraq all over again just without war. But hey, now you have your own selfish reason to sign the petition, you'll get a discount on diamonds in the near future.
So yeah, we save the gays but we end up sucking them of their resources cause this the realistic outcome. Gov't sends some troops over to "make sure no rights are taken away" meanwhile, the US puts some gov't officials on the payroll so if they strike up some diamond mine (or whatever Uganda has) the US gets a cut. And if we want to put a McDonalds over there we do that too.
I just don't understand the entire lack of hope. Yeah, odds are Uganda is not gonna give a fuck, but at least in your heart you know you did the right thing. On the other hand, let's se what will happen if the US intervenes. The US is like a good friend, he's strong so if anyone fucks with with you he beats em up. You fall into a deep depression and he let's you stay at his place. But if you leave your wallet home expect cash to be gone.
so a petition in amarica is goona change something in a diffrent country. you know like that one petition that was against the japaneese killing whales. that worked out
Yes I agree with you guys about Uganda, but as I think about this they are killing to be killing, and yes this is very wrong, what about the theft in that country, you steel and death, you cheat on your spouse death, you get caught drinking and driving deathyou8 look at someone wrong and death so this is just another way for them to justifi another way to be killing, Just saying
I guess I'm just confused...I know nothing about this situation or this petition, but couldn't a petition even if it doesn't work, still inspire and motivate other possibilities that could stop everything? How could we know that, it's like saying you're in a car and you have to get it into the sky. We don't know how that's gonna happen, but you just have to say "OK, we're in the sky, where do we wanna go now?"
....did Martin Luther King say we couldn't do anything about civil rights? Did we say, well shit, Hitler's gonna kill all the Jews, we can't do anything about it since we're a different country, it's their countries, they can do what they want?
really? omg. ugh, i hate being this helpless and i wish there were some way to stop all of it not only in uganda but everywhere. i'm officially depressed for the night.
Still doesn't mean we can't sign the petition that is going around online to have this bill stopped. It's only going to take you, two minutes. No offense but if your argument for not signing this petition to help stop gays and a lot of other people is because "they are going to do it anyways" then you obviously don't think gays are equal. Sure you might not think gays deserve to be killed, but your not doing anything about this. I am gay and I want others to stay alive, so I suggest signing it.
@shirtsareoverrated So you can take two minutes to read my comment and reply to it, but you can't take two minutes of your life to sign the petition? If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work. However signing it won't kill you. I can't see you supporting me if you can't take two damn minutes to sign a petition that can and might work.
@rawrisluv i would GLADLY take the 2 seconds to sign a petition, if it would do something. but...it won't. i'm pretty confident that you know my opinion on gay rights. But do you think Uganda gives a shit at what we think? not one bit. the fact is, the bill will probably pass. it's sad and terribly depressing, but we are here, helpless. unless our government steps in. there is a lot of terrible in the world. this is a great example of it.
@shirtsareoverrated I thought I knew you support my rights as a gay male... however you are wasting your time, arguing over not signing a petition that can help (yes it can help, we have had many bills overturned for gay issues. Look at change[dot]org for examples). So again, if your argument for not signing this is because "it won't work," you are not fighting for gay rights. It's your choice, however my respect for you has plummet.
@rawrisluv Bills in our own country, maybe, but it's Uganda. If we ere passing a bill, and tons of people from Japan signed a petition against it, do you think we would care? You are ignorant. Don't say I'm saying that just because you are gay, either. It's not. You are just hoping for something that isn't gonna happen.
@rayroe777 Again, look at many of the bills online. I recently signed a gay issue petition for McDonald restaurants in NEW ZEALAND to stop censoring gay web sites, thinking they are "inappropriate for children." By gay websites I don't mean pornography, but gay news websites, including TheAdvocate. I signed it, and McDonald's stopped censoring it, even emailed me to assure they stopped it. Trust me, it works. Again, take the damn 2 minutes of your life and sign the petition. It won't hurt you.
@rawrisluv Also, they have been killing people for years... Why are you just know getting interested? Oh because you think it effects you. No it doesn't. Unless you move to Uganda nothing will happen to you. Petitions won't help, and America isn't stupid enough to go to war for "gay rights".
@rayroe777 You know why? Because if I was living in Uganda, I wouldn't wanna die over being gay because it's an "HIV/AIDS epidemic." It's called being a gay rights activist and NO ONE should be killed for being gay. As an activist, you fight to give them equal rights. I'm not saying USA should go to war, I'm against the concept of war and I never said it anywhere in my comments. I'm saying just sign the damn thing. There is no excuses to take two minutes to sign the petition. It's very simple.
@rawrisluv lol You're not going to get everything you want. There will always be war, racism, prejudices, sexism, ageism, etc. You can't change the world with a piece of paper. Hate to break it to you. Also, trying to force someone to do something for you, and using language probably isn't the best way to do things. Especially if you're for equality and peace.
@rayroe777 Of course, I mean there wasn't people like Ghandi, Harvey Milk or Martin Luther King Jr. who fought for equal rights for a group of people who were treated badly. They didn't accomplish anything (note the sarcasm). I'm not forcing him, like I said earlier it's his choice, however his excuse is completely illogical. And to the language part, look up FCKH8. If you got offended by my "damn" your ears will bleed after you watch 10 seconds of their videos.
@rayroe777 And to the corporation thing, get in touch with your politics, because all the republicans and the majority of democrats in the Senate is OWNED by corporations. So sooner or later, corporations will be your government.
@rawrisluv I was pointing out the only reason that petition worked was because It's an American corp. There are laws they have to follow. Uganda can't just be shut down like a fast food chain.
@rayroe777 It was still a gay rights issue. Gays were being discriminated against for being gay. I'll still fight for all of our rights, and I'll support for yours whenever you get discriminated against. Uganda can change their minds by the protestors, inside Uganda and all around the world. They still have a choice, and we can convince them it's not okay.
@rayroe777 No? I support everyones right to live. Like I said earlier, I'd even support you. However I was informed by it because a lot of people like gay people and it got spread fast. If I found it and there was a different reason why they are killing innocent people I'd still sign it. Just because I'm gay doesn't mean I'm being nicky-picky. I'd consider myself a great human being for fighting for their right to live, where you have given up because you don't believe gays are worth it, right?
@MrSames660 Look at what I said earlier. With technology we have today, we can persuade people to rethink and make the right decision. The other stuff you said is completely rude and homophobic of you. But that's probably because your butt hurt... so get off your dads dick and look at the bigger picture buddy.
@rawrisluv Yes petitions can and do help, but usually those are for issues that are going on in the US not in a place such as Uganda. Uganda isn't going to care if a bunch of people on-line signed something, the better thing to do would be to make a petition to send to someone in our government to try to do something about it by talking to the leaders in Uganda. I do think though that in the end it wouldn't HURT to sign the petition though.
@rawrisluv you just really dont get the fact that its Uganda..... they can run their country how they want. if that is what they want to do then let them do it. this does not affect you in any way at all. its quite sickening that you think that you can force your westernized values onto a country that dosnt want them. they wont care about some American petition and completely change the government because of it. Yes i do believe its wrong but im not going to force my beliefs on them.
@shirtsareoverrated If enough people sign the petition our government will take notice and then it could lead to some kind of affirmative action from them.
@lizerbeth10 you can isolate uganda by means of boycotting them, of not buying from them or selling to them. and also restricting american bible-thumpers from going to uganda
@shirtsareoverrated The attention of our own governments can easily be taken. Uganda gives a shit about what the major superpowers like the USA think.
Huge quantities of economic aid are given to Uganda by the West, stopping that would be an economic deterent though making the nation poorer may make it more desperate to scapegoat groups like gays. The West has a huge influence due to its money over these countries and petitions can change what our governments do. Maybe we should just take it over, develop it (giving our people jobs), and give it back to them when they're civilised enough to be trusted? Imperialism ftw.
2 wrongs do not make a right. Child soldiers do not justify killing gays. We should intervene in a lot more places, we have the power and we're part of the reason they're so fucked up we can't forget our role in all this. Iraq could have worked, if we gave any thought to it at all.
I hate this bill. But I agree, we cannot do anything and I dont want my daddy to go over to Uganda, because in my own opinion Uganda is much scarier than Iraq. I mean I have gay family and gay best friends. Yes the whole bible says it is frowned upon, but God made that human being and I believe he made a person of who they are weather its gay or straight. THIS IS MY OPINION DONT GET ANGRY AT ME. They are killing people just to kill and putting reason behind it but it still doesnt make sense.
Unfortunately people do take a double-standard, but people are people with opinions & it sucks. =\
It's stupid, but unfortunately we're not going to solve any problems anywhere until we change the manner of thinking; which is way harder than dropping a ton of bombs & throwing soldiers at the problem.
I'm not happy with Iraq, nor Uganda now; best I can do currently is voice my opinion with words- best that any of us can do without ruling via fear.
the only thing that means is we need to ship Justin Bieber to Uganda lol, but seriously that's horrible it's going to end up becoming the next holocaust
uganda is fucking scary!!! we can't do anything but voice our opinion. it sucks that they are killing gays bc gay ppl are the coolest ppl ever! but its just stupid
Why cant america have this bill fml

Then don't meddle with another country and it's policies. Backseat drivers are a pain regardless!

You're right.
