hey im new to charcoal and stuff just wondering if like if you get the charcoal and light it with a lighter will it light?? and what can i make with charcoal thankz...... PIZ REPLY!!!!!!
@CellE2057 It does. It will burn much faster though because it's not as dense. The charcoal briquets that you buy are powdered charcoal that's been crushed into powder and molded into briquets. A lot of the air space has been squished out as a result and it doesn't burn as fast.
@CrypticCRICKET I tried it with apple tree branches and it was awesome but yeah, it burned out really fast. I ended up using twice as much as I would of the store bought but it was absolutely worth it. Made me appreciate the food that much more too.
@CrypticCRICKET your talking about the gas escaping from the crucible? is there some way to bottle that gas? or to condense it into liquid? i think a video of that might be worth a look see
@REFIGUY69 Yup. That gas is known as "wood gas" There are furnaces that burn that for super efficient combustion. No idea how to capture and condense the gas.
Great question! Homemade charcoal does not have the same properties as activated charcoal. It's not as efficient as activated coal. Activated charcoal has been manufactured in a way that opens the charcoal's cell stucture to create a huge number of pores in the carbon. The extra pores in "activated charcoal" create additional surface area for thnigs to bond to and as a result the activated charcoal is much, much more effective at removing the substances that will stick to it.

@2boyfilms111 Yup it will light if you put a flame to it.
Lots of things that you can do with charcoal. Search Google for "charcoal uses".
You can also use the method shown in this video to make charcloth. Charcloth is an important flash tinder for making primitive fire.

Am I to assume that the charcoals work just like a purchased charcoal? ie; Soak in lighter fluid, let them burn down, enjoy grilled goodness.

Awesome, now I know something that I didn't know yesterday.

@PracticalLunatic It is interesting isn't it. Might even lead a person to study other areas like "wood gassification" technology. ;)
