Todd, thank you sooooooo soooo much for your lessons. I actually feel like I am sitting there with you. I have gotten past lesson 7 and have learned so much that I am able to play twinkle twinkle little star with you. You are a wonderful teacher. thank you for taking the time to share your talents with the rest of us!!!!!
Hi Professor, You are such a great instructor, good job. Please I'd like to know if it's possible to access all of your videos at once and also download them. I am finally making progress with my violin. Thanks to you.
Great videos, great english also because my native language is not english and so I can understand each of your words. I'll keep watching to learn more, thx.
Hi teacher! First of all, I want to tell you that you're very good at explaining. And I also want to ask for your help. I have a problem when I see that bow on the string, I can see my nose because it's too near to my eyes and it annoys me a lot. I think it's a problem with the height of my shoulder rest or my chin rest, but I tried many chin rests and many shoulder rest and I can't solve this problem. Is it necessary seeing the bow while you're playing?
I have 2 sons who are very good violinists - the eldest is a professional violinist - so I've sat through a lot of lessons. I love your teaching style. I had a spare violin in the house and decided a while ago to teach myself. Your lessons will be a great help. It's a shame you don't live round the corner! You're fantastic!
First of all, congratulations for your lessons! They're fantastic! Thank you!
I am absolutely new to this world and I'd like to buy a violin just to learn. How much should I pay for my first one? Should I have any preference for any mark? I'd appreciate any help you can give me on this matter.
I've only watched two lessons so far but I'm already convinced that you're a superb teacher. Explanation and demonstration together with encouragement is a winning recipe for good teaching and learning. Correction. Excellent teaching. Thank you.
@HarryHotspur100 I saw these before I even bought a violin. Prof.V doesn't give us the false impression that it's an easily approached instrument, but at least it can be approached! I am still a bit afraid of my violin.
hi i've been wanting to learn the violin since last year but well i'm in high school now and i dont have much time so i guess i'll probably start lesson in october till that time your videos are very very helpful ;) do you have any suggestions for violins a violin teacher told me i should buy a full size violin but i'd like to know a little more .
I so badly want to learn violin, many people have told me it's a difficult instrument, is it ?
Anyway i would still like to know what kind of a violin should I buy ? and the things one should keep in mind while buying one and finally how to begin ?
Hello Professor V, Thanks for your lessons.. I am not getting continuity after lesson#-7, part-1.. where is Part2,3 and where is 8 part-1 etc.. Can u please make a playlist in order? Thanks V
Dear professorV , I just bought a violin lately and started to test the string. They didn't come to the same sound as your violin does. The E string goes like a C and so as the other 3 strings ( they all come in strange sounds that don't sound like yours) . Would you tell me what's happening to it and how can I fix that ? I don't have any experience about violin because I haven' learn anything about it before. Thank you Sir.
hello professor,i don't have words to describe how much help your videos are,THANK YOU SO MUCH..But, I have a doubt sir,I've been playing violin for the past few weeks and started doing great, thanks to your videos and my E string is making a screechy sound no matter how many times I tried to play, all others are okay..and I AM CLUE LESS,PLEASE HELP ME SIR..THANK YOU
Hi sprizz11, first look to see if it's a wound string. Is there any damage? Next, look at where the string meets the bridge. Does it pass through a plastic tube? If so, the tube can muffle the sound if it projects too far over the bridge. If you don't have one, look for a plastic strip glued to the bridge where the string contacts the wood. Is it there? If not, is the string cutting very far into the wood? That could cause your noise. No? Perhaps you just need a new E string! Good luck
Thank you professor! I moved to a new city and found myself a violin teacher, but I feel lucky, I'm sure many will feel the same, watching these lovely lessons you post!
Your lessons are amazzzzzzzzzing!! Thank you so much!!
ProvessorV please, why it sounds like this, forgive me but I didn't like the sound anymore, It didn't like violins 1 and 2 of an orchestra, how can I have the self sound of symphonies and Orchestra in my violon, and not have this sound, because it's really near of Viola. :s
Hi Professor, I bought a new violin. But its not making any sound at all....I never played violin...........i want to learn playing violin... can you please tell me how to make sound... thank you.
Hi TheOurvoice, It sounds like you need rosin! Look for the little amber cake that should have come in your violin case. If it's new, you'll have an easier time if you scratch the top of the rosin with a pin or key, until the top is white. Apply the rosin by using long full strokes. If the bow has absolutely no rosin on it, it may take 10-15 strokes. Good luck!
Hi Professor, I bought a new violin. But its not making any sound at all....I never played violin...........i want to learn playing violin... can you please tell me how to make sound... thank you.
hey, when I play string crossing, my fingering hand is fine, but my bowing arm get's confused. What exersise could I do to make my bowing arm "communicate" with my fingering hand?
Thank you for posting these videos, Professor. I appreciate the time you took to make them. They are an excellent accompaniment to my formal lessons. I find myself watching your lessons just before practicing on my violin. It helps to reinforce all that I have learned so far.

Hello, I have a question, maybe you can help me... it revolves around the E string: when 'm playing the open string it sounds ok, but when I'm creating notes on the E string it sound scratchy, what could be the problem? Is the string not of great quality maybe? Or is it my fault because of my fingers (they don't fall right on the notes)... please help! THX!
very wonderful. thank you for sharing. i am just starting to learn how to play the violin and indeed, i hit the A string everytime I shift to E and vice versa.
I have two questions. How much pressure do you advice to set on the bow when bowing? and how tense shall it be, as tense as it appears to be in this video? I will much appreciate answers to this and thank you very much for the videos in general.
i have been have problems with my new violin that i got off of the internet, i'm just starting. and my violin when i put my bow on the strings and try to play a note it makes no sound. is this normal?
@mackattac95 I think you need to rosin it.. did you do that? I faced the same problem but my teacher told me you HAVE to rosin your bow else your violin won't make any sound. I think :P
@mackattac95 I have the same problem but I try to rosin my bow but it does not rub off any rosin from the new and still shiny block of rosin. There is no rosin on the bow and the bow just glides over the string without making a sound.
Thank you very much for this video. I really want to learn how to play the violin. I was gonna buy one last week but i found out that there are 4, 5, 6, & 7 string violins
Now im more confuse than ever which one to buy. With you video, i realize its a whole lot more difficult than I thought it is. Please advise.
I already play the Acoustic Guitar but Violin was something I admired as well. Your tutourial has me ready to purchase a violin and put in some more Knowledge plus a few hundred thousand reps. to get to that violin skill level. Do I stand a chance?
Thank you. I'm a newbe for playing violin. I'm trying to learn the very basic how to handle violin before engaging a teacher. Worried at first to pick up wrong technique and accumulate bad habits. But with your teaching I am glad that I am sure I am doing the right things.
Hi , thank you for your videos , i played my first few scales already , im a pianist so i know the value of repetition :)
one question does the amount of pressure your fingertip applies to the string on the fretboard matter ? because it seems i have to press very hard to get a clear note , i took it to a music store and they told me the bridge was too high , how would i lower the bridge =[ ?
Thank you so much professor, I've been watching your videos everysingle day since I got my bridge fixed. I'm having a hard time placing my fingers on the strings. Any suggestions? =(
Hey profV thx so much for this video ! I've always rowed my wrist when changing strings and not my whole arm like what you've taught. And now I have improved just because of that !
Thanks so much !!! I'm just another grateful student =)
Hi Todd. I am pretty new to teaching.. love your videos. How do you get students to stop clutching on to the neck with left hand and turn the hand towards the neck?C.P.
Hi, I'm teach music at school, I'm from Peru, and this video is very useful.
I'm tech, flute, guitar and piano basic lesson for children. This year at School have two children, they play violin, and this lesson are very easy to practice.
hey poopershnitzelz, actually i just got my violin today and same thing happend to me too. but what i did was, when i was twisting it, i was like..kinda pushing those pegs inside and twisting it which helped me to retain new spots position. try it..:)
WoW!!!You really are a great teacher!Thank you sooo very much for these videos!Im getting my violin tomorrow from the repair shop(it was a very old one..i had to get it restrung and things like that)and I cant wait to start taking lessons!!!:)☺
You're doing a great thing, encouraging people and amazing us with great possibilities for the future... now I can already dream of really beautifully playing while listening to Paganini. ; )
Oh, professor!!!! You help me a loooooooooooooooot!!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!! I thank you from the bottom of my peruvian heart!!!! Your videos ARE useful!!!!!! thank you so much!!!
Every question, i ever have is answered in one of your videos. Thank you so much. I watch your videos before I practice and focus on applying your lessons. Amazing amount of material to develop skill with, as always in just about 5 mins. Never stop posting please. Thanks Again.
wow, i just borrowed my friends violin and don't know a single note on the violin (except for the gdae) but after watching this video, i can play twinkle2x little star! you are one amazing teacher!
Sir, I have watched each and every one of your violin instruction videos, and as an adult beginner, find them immensely helpful. As many others have stated, you are an excellent teacher. I thank you sincerely for your time and generosity!
what im having issues with is reading notes I've always been bad at reading music but when it comes to learning even when i play guitar im good at the visual if someone
physically shows me the note. I also can pick up sound pretty good once i have learned all finger placing and have heard the individual sound a section of the string has made i can usually repeat that sound without sheeted form of it. but my issue is i have a hard time following sheet notes is there a tricks?
very important lesson I have learnt in this video.... Knowledge is not skill, knowledge repeated 10000 times creates skill, I will remember that... Thanks, you are really good.
if we can get dedicated teachers like you doing online tutorials like these, students like me who can't afford paying to good schools can become good artists just with a computer and a broadband connection. Thankyou so much Sir !
I was just hoping that maybe you could post a tutorial for how to play "Starry Starry Night" by Don Mclean or violin sheet music in first position. It's one of my dad's favorite songs, and i really want to learn it for him. Thanks so much! I know it's a long song, but most of it just repeats, and i would really appreciate it if you could help me. Thank you again!
Thanks for a very clear explanation. I play traditional Irish music on tenor banjo and mandolin, and want to add fiddle to my tool kit. String crossing has been a major problem. This has helped a lot. Thank you.
Professor V i want to learn to play the violin. I play bass and guitar now but i can't read music sheets and i think that will be a big problem? Could you recommend what to do? Or where i could find lessons to learn how to read them? thanks.
I've seen alot of teaching videos online, most are pretty terrible. I have several students, but am by far, not a Berkley or Julliard grad! Your methodology is clear, concise and accurate. You have put at least a couple of thousand dollars worth of lessons on You Tube, and brother, I sure do appreicate it! You're videos are well done.
No mams¡¡ que no cobre¡ Luego luego a ponerle precio a las clases. Hay gente como yo que se beneficia de estos videos porque no tiene billetes para pagar clases particulares. Tu porque eres un burgués te atreves a decirle que cobre... Piensa baboso¡¡
Thanks Professor for making all this great videos, I'm 26 and I've only 4 months learning how to play the violin with your videos. Hope one day play as good as you do.
You mentioned Prof. Galamian. I was just reading his book Principles of Violin Playing and Teaching. NIce video. Most of the technique you taught wasn't really taught by my violin teacher, sad to say but i was self discovering these essential violin technique for the past 9 years of violin playing...
Thanks for this trick. I am currently having a hard time with string crossing. I always hit the other string while I'm crossing from A to E and vice versa. Could it be the problem that I'm using all parts of the bow to play? I didnt restrict myself to 2/3 of the bow. Another thing is that whenever I cross from A to E, even though I'm not bowing, I still create slight noise on the string. That is the annoying part. Any ideas how to correct that?
quick question: should you be pushing down on the strings hard enough so that they actually touch the fingerboard? someone told me you never press down so that they actually touch the fingerboard.
Frozenyak, I remember my professor at Eastman discussing this subject. She said the string had to make contact with the fingerboard to produce a full, focused sound. However, if you watch my newest video on relaxation techniques, you'll see a trick I do with a piece of paper held under the string while I'm playing. I believe it's more important to learn how to listen for that focused sound, and to learn just how relaxed you can be and still get it. Weight beyond that is a waste of energy.
thanks, just got my violin today, and finding your lessons very easy to understand. I have to admit I was pretty daunted beforehand, but I'm feeling confident that I'll get the hang of it now
I just wanted to thank you For the great service you are doing. I've been playing for many years and have just this last week started teaching. It has been some time since my first lessons and although I remember some details and exercises your videos are helping me parse the body of knowledge into bites my students will be able to grasp and adding some missing bits I may have past over.
Wow I'm just starting to learn and when i play, the bow keeps sliding out of place. I had no idea you were supposed to start learning on that little section of the middle of the bow! Thanks, it helps so, so much!!
i notice there are several quailty strings, like Heliocore and Dominant. Will good/premium strings make a mediocre violin sound much better ? Will a cheap/inexpensive violin always sound bad ? ie can you make really great music on a violin that is less than $500
Fantastic lessons, Thanks so much. I am literally just starting. Borrowed someone violin and waiting for a tuner.
Any tipes on what to buy later for a permanent violin of my own. My ambition is to be able some day to play Canon in D reasonable well. How many years does it take to get to that point ? Not in concert but for my own satisfaction.
Professor, your videos are amazing! However, silly me didn't think to watch these videos when i was starting out on the violin and teaching myself, so I have to unlearn the bad habits and relearn the good ones, such as the ones shown in this video. Now my arm is starting to cramp from holding it correctly, and I'm hoping it goes away soon :(
thanks man, you're the instructor that i'vealways needed. the way you're teaching is really good and interesting. I've seen other instructors ....booooring. i get sleepy after 2 minutes, but you....you really want to do this. anyways many thanks.
Claudiu from Romania ..this lessons are a very good thing cus i learned alone the violin like 3 years ago and i got much problems now cus i didn't learned to hold the bow and the hand on the violin proper. Anyway thanq very much ! still got some problems with the pinky but i am sure after i will watch the lessons i will be on the right track ! :D
I'm a french guitarist just begining to learn violin.
Thank tou very much for all these lessons. thank you to share your knowlegde. That's very usefull and I have impoved a lot since I have watched your video and listened to you
Thank You professor...! Your lessons are the best on the web! In Italy we have anything at this level.....in oter words: on youtube, for example, italian lessons about violin is very less. Incredible....!
Thanks professorV

Thank you so much professor, I've been watching your videos everysingle day since I got my bridge fixed. I'm having a hard time placing my fingers on the strings. Any suggestions? =(

what im having issues with is reading notes I've always been bad at reading music but when it comes to learning even when i play guitar im good at the visual if someone
physically shows me the note. I also can pick up sound pretty good once i have learned all finger placing and have heard the individual sound a section of the string has made i can usually repeat that sound without sheeted form of it. but my issue is i have a hard time following sheet notes is there a tricks?

Hello! :)

You mentioned Prof. Galamian. I was just reading his book Principles of Violin Playing and Teaching. NIce video. Most of the technique you taught wasn't really taught by my violin teacher, sad to say but i was self discovering these essential violin technique for the past 9 years of violin playing...
By the way, nice video.

Thank you.

quick question: should you be pushing down on the strings hard enough so that they actually touch the fingerboard? someone told me you never press down so that they actually touch the fingerboard.
Frozenyak 2 years ago
Frozenyak, I remember my professor at Eastman discussing this subject. She said the string had to make contact with the fingerboard to produce a full, focused sound. However, if you watch my newest video on relaxation techniques, you'll see a trick I do with a piece of paper held under the string while I'm playing. I believe it's more important to learn how to listen for that focused sound, and to learn just how relaxed you can be and still get it. Weight beyond that is a waste of energy.

Hi Professor,
I just wanted to thank you For the great service you are doing. I've been playing for many years and have just this last week started teaching. It has been some time since my first lessons and although I remember some details and exercises your videos are helping me parse the body of knowledge into bites my students will be able to grasp and adding some missing bits I may have past over.
Thank You again

i notice there are several quailty strings, like Heliocore and Dominant.
