  • Everyone with a sense of decadence, aka good style, miss the 80's. I'm usually a man for electronic music, but always loved The Style Council. This is spirituel music.

  • LOVED it back then...and i still do!!!

  • I love this song. :) todays music is so fkn tarnished that it makes me sick just to listen to it. But this song makes me think that im drivin down a GTA street about to pick up a hot chicka and have some fun tonight haha gotta love it. love this song!!!!!

  • Paul Weller is THE SEX!!!!!!

  • This song is cool.

  • I miss the 80's. This decade is messed up.

  • @louisgeorge everyone complains the 80's was the worst decade of music but if you really look back now it was great. The 2000's is probably the worst by far.

  • "Everyone" who probably wasn't born in that decade or who was probably born in the 80's but hated it because they wore braces and the bullies locked them up in the locker. Sade, Flock of Seagulls, China Crisis, Johnny Hates Jazz, Al jarreau, Bananarama, Bangles, Spandau Ballet, Wang Chung, Billy idol, Breathe, Debbie Gibson, Come on I could go on. Music today sucks they don't make any sense. Just a lot of ass shaking the word f*ck in the lyrics. That's why kids are so messed up today.

  • @louisgeorge your list is impressive, the nostalgia so great almost to painful to think about

  • Outstanding song from the 80's.

Another fine example of a lost gem from a decade of music that most people are too quick to dismiss.

    Fresh,under appreciated and seldom heard.

  • The '80s were an absolute blast.

This takes me back to my student days in gaie Paris...

The French actually had a thing for The Style Council, most probably because of their Jazz based style.

In any case, a "grande creme" coffee, a fresh pack of Malrboros (am not off the cigs, thank the lord) and these guys on the walkman (or on vinyl at my girlfriend's place in Melimontant) and I'd be good to go for 36 hours.

    Cheers for the upload!

  • I had this on 7" inch single, still brilliant after all these years.

  • weller is amazing.

  • Does anyone know anything about the large painting in the background.

  • Methinks it was inspired by the coal mine closures in Britain through the '80s. If so, the song could be a encouragement to redundant coal miners to keep their heads up.

  • 最高だよ・・・ 俺この曲できたとき生まれてないんだよなぁ 中一だし

  • giniro, you do know this is not an art competition!

  • As a fellow keyboardist I really admire Mick Talbot on this one. Weller? Confidence and a hot woman.. that's for me

    I love you Weller!!

  • LogicHead....Paul Weller is the singer (ex The Jam).....Mick Talbot is the pianist. Look it up.

  • hamjamnspamalot,

Yep. I stand corrected. I think I've covered all the bases re: the correction and letting everyone know. Best I can do. I apologise to all.

Cheers to you and plonsdrums for being good sports in correcting me.

It won't be one I forget in a hurry and I will look to have it inspire me on to finer quality rather than drag me down.

    Regards,

    Tom.

  • I have this on my Vision Quest soundtrack! Luvin me some Style Council!

  • Style Council rulezzzzzzz !!!!

  • Who is the pianist? anyone know.......

  • mick talbot

  • dylanbr00ks,

I offer my apologies. I don't know what else to say. Feel free to read my comment to plonsdrums as well.

    Sorry.

    Tom.

  • its fine LogicHead, just now you and Fascinationyacht know more about the style council than you did before.

  • Fascinationyacht/all,

The pianist is Paul Weller. I have no idea where dylanbr00ks got Mick Talbot from. My gosh, how can anyone make such a blaring mistake?

It is the rock piano performance of the century isn't it??!! If you delete everything from music in the last fifty years and leave this performance, I could still go on in life. I love it!!!!!

  • "The pianist is Paul Weller."

    - To use your own words: "My gosh, how can anyone make such a blaring mistake?"

  • plonsdrums,

I hold my head in shame. This is one where I will curl up into a little ball and roll away. Phew! I am gutted here. Look up shamed, red-faced, blown away by embarrassment in the dictionary and you will see a photo of me as I am right now.

There must be a glass of water here somewhere - alongside a commitment to perhaps check things. One of those human imperfection things?????

    LogicHead/Tom quits.....

  • Fascinationyacht/all,

The pianist is Mick Talbot as first stated by dylanbr00ks. Instead of making a correction, I made a mistake and that makes the mistake worse by a factor of strewth, what can I say, many, many, many times over. I am sorry for the confusion I caused. I am gutted. I do remain human and best going forward is best going forward. Part of that was this correction.

Thanks also to hamjamspamalot. I just saw your comment.

    Regards,

    Tom.

  • totally awesome, luv luv luv this

  • listening this music in my jacuzzi drinking moet e chandon and fucking all te time,,,,

  • we're gonna shout to the top! thats fuckin right!

  • c'est le top !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • one of best pop performance of the last 30 years...Weller has a very precious voice, powerful......hi Paul , know you are watching all this posts

  • Great !!!

  • Is that piano player trying not to shit himself?

  • eu amo essa musica

  • Paul Weller is ace!

  • In answer to the question posted by armydave:

The singer's name is most definitely Dee C Lee (whose real name is Diane Sealey hence the stage name) who has had quite a successful solo career of her own. She is not to be confused with an artist who went by the stage name of "Princess", who also has had some success under her real name Desiree Heslop. Hope this helps. cheers.

  • today's music sucks. this song rocks. i don't understand what's not to like about it.

  • actually pop rock music was on the down hill slide long before 1980 but it did receive a brief boost with The Police but that did not last because in 1986 music started on a precipitous down hill slide into oblivion and schlock that year. it was the year The Police broke up and music has NOT been the same since then.

  • No - music started going downhill late 70's early 80's. By 1986 it was already a steaming pile of shit. Today, its a gigantic steaming pile of rancid shit. Sting is a fuckwit and the police were nothing special.

  • well that is your opinion and i will respect but i must beg to differ. sting and the police from the late 70s to early and mid 80s actually inspired me to think. later on in the decade of the 80s i will agree with you on the rancidness and music today is totally un-inspiring.

  • Mick Talbot la pêche!!!

  • Quabto mais o tempo passa, essa música fica melhor !!!!!

  • Can someone tell me the name of the backing singer please...?

  • i think she went by the name princess..she also brought a single out..in the c lip she was on roller skates

  • sorry not princess got confused with someone else..dee c lee is her name

  • Her name is D.C. Lee. She and Paul Weller were married for years. Weller is said to have written "How She Threw It All Away" about her. Check that video also.

  • i couldn't appreciate this song when i was in college now in my thirties i understand it completely. its great on so many levels. DC is Hooooooottttttt~~~!!!!

  • wow new romantic music rules.........

  • weller dressed up like a fukkin rapper

  • que pena que essa banda tenha acabado, sensacional todas as musicas.

  • まさに空を突き抜けるような清々しいメロディとシャウトが最高です!

  • from the jam, best band ever

  • yeah, I agree.

    DC Lee is hot

  • Weller's first wife was cool...

  • Holy crap...are you kidding? The Style Council came after the Jam broke up and Paul Weller formed what you are listening to now. FYI The Jam are still considered one of the most influential bands EVER and certainly in terms of the british punk movement.

  • yeah I know, i hate the jam.

  • HOW can u hate the jam?!

  • I actually think I like the style council MORE

  • I hate u

  • were they the first brit pop band?

  • Esta musica eleva qquer um q conheceu o saudoso anos 80....

    Q saudade daquele tempo ...

    Muito diferente dos anos atualmente...

  • fantastic

  • La musique compense largement le clip...

  • I love this song and really like this vid but there is a few question i have. What exactly is this vid trying to say, of course it has somthing to do with the working man. And what the heck is Paul wearing?! lol

  • don,t forget MTV and video clip era fisrt started in the early 80,s so most of the clips have nothing more to say then dancing & singin along ;} they did not spend millions a clip like they do know, and when yoy have a tight budget you get simple clips, lovely ,just relaxed ;}

  • aguanta esta rola

  • Wow.. Love it, Pure energy ; )

  • just one word: GREAT!!! Good Music never dies.

  • Boy, this brings back memories...

fast paced music for all that youthful energy... (sigh)..

  • such a thrill to see him perform this last night at the Moore in Seattle

  • the pianist is SO INTO playing this song. it's awesome.

  • Yeah, Paul Wella. I am with you on that one ainbowray all the way to the end..

This song makes a contribution in every way possible. The lyrics, the music and the performance. The passion it stirs up in me makes it fricking hard to type ffs! lol.

Damn, I'll quit here before I burst a blood vessel.

  • jamesdev knows his onions

  • Nice :o)

  • the greatest tune ever

  • Pure class

  • Oh this band was so special! Paul Weller is so great..

Let's all shout him to the top...He even won best male vocalist,

    about 6-8 yrs ago....

  • he won best male solo artist last year

  • seen weller in liverpool a few months back he was brilliant

  • Lucky you!! He´s one of the most talented person in the world

  • great song

  • Aren´t you ever "half in mind" or "half in need"??? Actually I feel the same

´".. and as the rain came down I dropped to me knees and I pray..."

A cry for help in these critsit (critical situation) moment

  • I said "oh Heavenly thing - please cleanse my soul,

I've seen all on offer and I'm not impressed at all"....

    Please cleanse my soul,,,,

  • Eu comecei a ouvir The Style Council em 88, eles são fantásticos, uma verdadeira marca dos memoráveis anos 80. Ouço ainda até hoje sem cansar.

  • At this moment in time....

  • i listened to style council over and over and over...i will never tire of paul weller...this is the coolest music!!!

  • This is such a feel good song. As soon as it begins you feel at ease.

  • Strewth. I wouldn't have the faintest idea what sort of life you live but when those first few notes play, I agree with the uploader, jubasam, that it has stomach punch.

This, for me, is a classic 'go your own' way song. Love along the way too because in the end, that is what will remain.

I agree with your comment but its more than feel good. More than being one of the best feel good songs also. It is inspirational. Failure is not when you go down, it is when you stay down!

  • Thanks for your interisting comment Logichead. I consider this song as a state of mind in which you´re in a doubt...

I think is very common in human nature

We dont know wether to cry or laugh so you decide to shout as high as you can, pray everything and make a break in your life,, I mean you feel that you are alife.. The Style Concil are magicians of feelngs,

I can recommend you guys another pearl from them: The Paris Match,

Have a happy Easter guys !!!

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, indeed Emilio. Doubt is a common state of mind. I know better where you are coming from now. Thanks.

I listened to 'The Paris Match' on your recommendation and personally, I prefer Tracy Thorn's version. It is the melody which makes the song though and you can tell it is Paul's all the way.

Regarding 'Shout To The Top', I think we both realise that faith is deeper than doubt.

I appreciate where you are coming from. Emotions are the source of motion.

Faith is the bedrock of life.

  • It is inspirational and, hence, a feel good song. I hear it and feel good--be it inspired, less worried, focused, etc.

  • The memories associated with the song also contribute to the feelings one associates with any given song.

  • that girl is so good looking!

  • Thats Dee C Lee, Paul Wellers ex Wife, Believe it or not. He's a ledgend but what an ugly git, What did she see in him eh??

  • dude can't you see the genius in the song thats what she saw in him. she is so fine

  • Don't get me wrong, the song is fantastic, its one of my all time favs. And she is a babe.

  • Ysee its a frightening thing when it dawns upon you

That I know as much as the day I was born

And though I wasnt asked (I might as well stay)

And promise myself each and every day - that -

When youre knocked on your back - an your lifes a flop

And when youre down on the bottom theres nothing else

But to shout to the top - shout

  • I was halfway home - I was half insane,

And every shop window I looked in just looked the same

I said send me a sign to save my life

cause at this moment in time there is nothing certain in

    These days of mine

  • I was half in mind - I was half in need,

And as the rain came down - I dropped to my knees and prayed

I said oh heavenly thing - please cleanse my soul,

Ive seen all on offer and Im not impressed at all

  • man haven't heard this song since 1990ish and it is really picking me up today!! love the style council. forgot about them.

  • love it, makes me happy awsome x

  • yeah this was cool, it reminds me of my last year at school! :D

  • When your knocked on your back, and your life's a flop, and when your down on the bottom there's nothing left but to SHOUT TO THE TOP! Crazy cool.

  • thank you for pointing that out.
