The same exact thing happened to my 91 lx when it hit 3rd gear, i thought it was the platinum plugs but hten again i think i was running either too rich/too lean

or shifted to early

god knows

luckily it didnt blow off my intake or anything

Yea his was through the carburator, nothing too damaging. He was back on the track in about 1 hour after this run.
