Rifle being the key word. The M1842 was smoothbore, in other words, a shotgun. It fired one large .64 caliber (unpatched) ball, and three .31 caliber round balls.
Ouch...nicely done, too bad for the Irish Brigade 'cause they had to get so close to the enemy in order to do some real damage with that kind of muskets.
When the Irish Brigade got close enough to the Rebels at Sharpsburg, MD (Bloody Lane), the .69 caliber buck & ball combination inflicted much destruction upon the Confederates. Although more modern rifled-muskes became available, the Irish held on to their M1842 smoothbores. If I am not mistaken, I believe one of the Irish Brigade monuments at Gettysburg is a large buck and ball cartridge.

Sure and you're cruel people to visit such harm to a melon that never did bother anyone :-). What will a .58 rifle Minie do to it?
