@grahamhg Is it really honorary? If so, are there any documentation of this? I've been researching for a while not with no luck to find that he's pure Judo.
@JoachimderZweite That US gentleman is the number 6th -81Kg fighter in the world right now. I think he knows a bit of judo, especially since this match got him Silver.
Travis and Flavio put on a wonderful display of truly elite Judo and displayed very clearly how important it is to be well-rounded,not just purely a newaza or tachiwaza specialist. Both of them are outstanding and Flavio is absolutely magnificent.
@ATACXGYM Canto displayed poor Tachi-waza .. he might be on an elite level Judoka but he always went for the sacrifice throw to bring the fight to the ground. Canto has excellent Ne-Waza but his Tachi-Waza is not of an elite level (based on this video).
Travis and Flavio put on a wonderful display of truly elite Judo and displayed very clearly how important it is to be well-rounded,not just purely a newaza or tachiwaza specialist
One of the best newaza technique I've ever seen! Travis didn't have any chance. That's why Canto is one of the best in the world in his category. Brazilian judo has a good combination between Japanese technique and European strength.
@yamasnik Judo ground work is definitely there. As long as you constantly attack (on the ground) like Canto did, they will NOT stand you up. I mean look, Canto kept attacking from one technique to another and they grappled on the ground for over a minute. The problem with many Judokas is that they will only grapple on the ground if they see an opening (for a choke or an arm bar). Most don't want to "work" for it (using sweeps, turn overs, etc).
@pcjudosambo If Kanto is the guy who took the other one to the ground, then I belive he has a background also in BJJ. probebly that's why he took him down all the time.. thx for the comment
@yamasnik I don't know but I think he also has a black belt in BJJ but to my best knowledge, that's not documented anywhere. His ne-waza (ground grappling) is the way ALL judokas used to have in 1950's.
Fight Analysis: 0:25 - drops down for a Sode-Guruma Throw (Pull-guard); 0:27 Switches immediately to a Sankaku-Garami lock (Omoplata); 0:41 - starts to grab leg and turns to a Juji-Gatame (armbar); 1:01 - Osaekomi attempt starts. 2:07 - sutemi-waza/pull-guard; 2:17 - Travis immediately traps Flavio's right leg, Flavio on the other hand seems to be doing a supposed spider-guard.
Seems like its payback to Travis after Flavio lost to him due to an injury back in 07. Guess they're both even now. Still Travis is my 3rd favorite US judoka after Jimmy Pedro and Ryan Reser.
@guilefoz Flavio Canto is a blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu began with Mitsuyo Maeda (aka Conde Koma, or Count Coma in English), an expert Japanese judoka and member of the then-recently-founded Kodokan. Maeda was one of five of Judo's top groundwork experts that Judo's founder Kano Jigoro sent overseas to demonstrate and spread his art to the world in the end he came to Brazil and the rest is history.
beautiful technique and wonderful display of world class judo by BOTH men. Congrats to Travis for his exceptional silver and Flavio for his masterful gold.
Before even Judo existed (changed? created by Jigoro Kano) those techniques already existed in Jiu Jitsu...They were taken away to make Jiu Jitsu a sport (Judo).
You might not have seen before in other art because probably you are not 100 years old...If you were born before Jigoro Kano you might have seen Jiu Jitsu (before Judo) and the techniques you say they belong to Judo...
Anyway that´s where you develop those techniques...until they use it nobody cares about ground...now it´s Judo ;-)
@kikojiu can you tell me which technique is unique from BJJ? come one.. tell me just ONLY one technique that we didn't see before in Judo.. I can't wait.. if you can't do this. you will end up like an idiot
Travis has trained at AKA with Dave Camarillo in the past to solve Flavio's BJJ training. But in this match Flavio is still a judoka & still got him a throw to a choke.

@migerusan29 1 second ago I am a black belt in BJJ Cralson Gracie Team, and Brown Degree in Judo and sports training for ULHT, Portugal, specializing in Judo. Judo training since I was 8 years and BJJ since 15 years, when I'm 36 years old. Ja trained with Flavio Canto sometimes. is it a dream and I'm talking shit? You is a dumbass! Who are you? Nothing! Fucking fag!
@vitafightclubjj Believe whatever you want I train in Kodokan Judo under Tomita grandson, Tomita was the better student of Jigoro Kano and it was much better than Maeda (Carlos Gracie teacher). I come from a superior lineage than yours, and i don't care if you don't believe it, i know what i am
@migerusan29 who cares what lineage you came from, even if he were better,it doesnt make him a good coach ,and if he was he didnt teach you.Lineage means nothing in judo.In bjj its important because there used to be so few legitimate coaches outside brazil so was to weed out fakes.
@vitafightclubjj unless you are brazilian, its impossible for you to have trained that long, there was no bjj in europe when you were 15.Probably ye should learn how to speak english before posting.
