The only thing I would add is to consider upgrading to a 16mm+ D lock like an Abus 59 or the 16-18mm Kryptonites. Anything below 16mm is croppable, 16 and above make cropping VERY awkward and if the material is of decent quality, impossibe.
Wouldn't it be better to take the front wheel with you (and the seat) if at all possible? It seems that most stolen bicycles are ridden away and it's kind of hard to ride a bicycle with no front wheel. From what I saw on YT, none of these locks can stop a professional, bolt cutters or battery operated angle grinders can get right through any lock at any price.
Um............. am i the only one missing this but he did not secure the bike to anything....... therefore the thief just has to pick up the bike and walk away with it!!! Then he can spend as much time as he wants to cut the lock!!!..... Maybe it's just me tell me if I'm wrong!!
To keep expensive bikes safe. You should do some of these things: two separate locks; lock the back wheel + frame and front wheel + frame with the two locks; only risk locking during daytime and in very busy area; never lock in the same place more than once; lock it next to a nicer bike; it's not just about picking the lock, but also cutting it; keep the locks off the ground.
1/ Get a good quality but old and knocked about looking hack bike frame.
2/ Spec it up.
3/ Try to lock it up where the bikes nearby look lush and saleable.
I followed this advice. My old '91 Orange mtb frame nicely spec'd up has lasted 7 years in & out of the West End everyday. Looks like shit but it's tough and it flies. A lush bike will NOT last 5mins in Central London however many locks you employ. The police don't give a f**k so it's a no-risk crime for scumbags to earn good £.
Good sugestion, I didn't know the concept of cable lock, never seen in France or Brasil were I use to live!
It is also sometimes suggested to use to differente lock for front and back wheel. So that it would force thieve to use two types of tools, increasinf security a little.
Not in New York they don't. And you don't have to "pick" these U-locks, I saw someone stealing my bike (I was on the 8th floor, by the time I got downstairs he was gone) and all he used was a 2x4 as a lever to twist the bars. Mulambo is right, a crappy bike isn't worth stealing and if you go crazy with tons of heavy chains and locks that kinda defeats the purpose of owning a high - tech lightweight bike in the first place.
@kingerz Indeed....But I realized, right after I wrote that comment, that in order for them to pay, you need to pay a monthly fee for the warranty.... -_-"
Sorry to pee on your cornflakes mate, but that is NOT the way to stop your nike being stolen. 1) Never EVER use a round keyed lock, they are easily picked by even the most basic of human beings. 2) Fill the D of the lock. I could easily have placed a mini jack in there and busted it wide open. 3) Use a lock of 16mm or greater diameter. 4) Use a lock with a square shackle like the Abus 59, that way the thief has to breach both sides of the D, not just break one side and spin the body off.
You used a crap D lock. Evolution or higher is better.
You didn't fill the lock with bike. Should've used the a crank to fill the gap. Otherwise there's space for a leverage attack or a small jack.
Cables are pathetic.
Pitlock is a good way of securing wheels.
Try to secure your secondary lock to an immovable too. This will reduce the chance of someone being able to use the bike as a lever to break the D-lock. They probably won't succeed but they'll screw the bike.
This is a rather foolish way to lock a bike if you are looking for double safety since if the U lock is broken, the cable does nothing to protect the bike. Better to replace the cable with a cable lock and also keep the U lock.
So you need wire cutter and bolter cutter to. All not have their weakness. Cable wire cutter, Chain bolt cutter, U lock saw, Key lock picking. Circle lock pen.
Only bad thing if you lock it that way it basically you locking it with 1 lock. If someone break the lock then your screw. TO make it better have a padlock lock it with the u lock.
Wouldnt it be better to use two separate locks i mean d lock and a cable lock with its own locking mechanism... In this case if the bastard picks one lok, he gets the bike... In case there are two locks he needs more time and if the locking mechanism is different he needs to use different techniques...
@BajsMejnijak Most thieves don't pick locks; they break them. The idea is, having to bust through a good U-lock (which the one shown in the video coincidentally is not) takes too much time and effort for most thieves to exert.
@BajsMejnijak most locks can be cut trough in mere seconds, high quality locks do not take more then 20 seconds to cut trough with a proper cable cutting tool available at most hardware stores
@MrRivalul Carry it on the rack of the bike, if there is one; else, some place on the frame is a good idea. It's inadvisable to transport locks on your body, as bulky, rigid metal can be hazardous in the event of an accident.

cover you bike in tape, weld various sections of steel on it ( for trailers engines etc), then no one will steel it then, thats my strategy
