This is about to save my life as we go into winter. What do you think about this idea? You know those tanning mirror things people have under their chin in the movies? What about doing that and lining it with an emergency mylar blanket? That mirro like surface behind and arround a plant in the window would give a turbo charged greenhouse instead of the 60s/70s right by the window.... I'll be carefull though, I used a similar idea to melt crayons into pools when I was in elementary school.
@Praxxus55712 Neat! :D I kept one tomato inside from last year. I took some cuttings off it. The cuttings live on, and niw thrive as one huge "mother plant", and two small ones..
The "mother plant" died, when I planted it outside too early.
I did not know it would work to keep it over winter here in Norway. So I did not save the name of the tomato. Or any seeds. BUT I LOVE THEM! Best taste ever.. And I have grown a few sorts now.. (Started in 2007 or so..)
@G0MPgomp I have a couple of videos on how to collect and save seeds from various vegetable plants. Just scroll through the videos. I can't post a link here because youtube won't allow. Saving tomato seeds is extremely easy. Growing a tomato plant indoors during winter is sort of fun too. Keeps me from going nuts during the cold snowy months. :)
Thank you for all your video's, they are great. I just have one question how do you water freshly sown seed in peat pots the kind you get at Lowe's 8 to a peat tray of approx. 2" square each. From the top or the bottom. I wish you could include in your videos how to water newly sown seeds.
i always have grown tomato plants the normal way and i get about 5-10 tomatoes per plant. Know i buried it super deep like how you said and there are 38 tomato flowers on it! is it to much for the plant? should i pull some off? Oh yea i forgot, i have 6 plants that have just as many buds on it!! lol
@Brndon076 I'm betting your plant can handle the load with it's bigger root system even though probably not all of the flowers will produce tomatoes. Just make sure you keep it watered so it doesn't stress from supporting the large amount of tomatoes. Congrats on your success! That's actually gonna be a ton of tomatoes.
I would love to grow tomatos like that but i have one small problem.. where i am at no. i get no sun comming directly into the window. live in New Mexico facing north.. NO sun not sure just artifical light would do the trick or not. any idea's?
You can definitely grow a tomato plant under flourescent light. It will be a little spindly, BUT it will put out a few tomatoes. I'd recommend using a strong compact flourescent light bulb. Also the smell of the plant just makes it seem less depressing inside during the winter. :)
@niffer58 ..heliostats can be set to reflect sunlight back into northfacing windows..if u use 2 heliostats u double the light and approximate summer growing conditions.peace.
nice plant , I don't know if your aware but tomatos are herbaceous perennials. so they are really meant to grow 2 or more years anyway because the root stays alive rather than growing strictly from seeds each season , so as long as you provide the right conditions it will grow, how well it flowers each succesive year depends on the breed...what breed is it anyway?
This particular plant is just listed as "cherry tomato". My local nursery doesn't offer specific breeds. They just offer a few differing varieties such as cherry, beeftseak and sauce tomatoes. I'm betting I can keep this plant alive longer than two years though. I'll just bury it deeper and force the stems to put down roots. :)
When I drag the rototiller into my living room and start tilling the carpet............that's when you need to check me into one of those cool white padded rooms. :)
That's awesome! I'm going to do that this week!

@Praxxus55712 Found this video of yours though. And it inspired me! :D
I am going to keep at least one plant inside this winter as well, ..
But do you have any video of how to take seeds? When to pick, how to dry, how to store? ..
Love your videos. I wish I found your channel earlier! Keep up the good work! :D

Awesome! This is my second year gardening. Can't say that I've had much success, but I Luv your videos. You make me laugh! "HelI0 Mr. T0m@to." :)

are you only suppose to put the suckers in durt or could you put leaf branches too?
gameplay1999 1 year ago
@gameplay1999 Just the suckers. Also any portion that's buried should have leaf branches removed. This will help it root faster and grow better.

That's a good window. You should set up a bank of hydro trays there to maximize. I use NFT gravity fed.
Good video.
