I remember, in the 1970s Book of Lists by Irving Wallace, Victor Herbert's "Thine Alone" was listed as one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I must agree because I've had every version of this album, vinyl, cassette, eight track and CD. It's a keeper! Thanks for sharing!
The most flawless melody I know and flawlessly presented. It moved me to tears the first time I heard it, and still does - not sad tears but tears resulting from the powerful beauty of this piece and this performance. "Indian Love Call" on this album also SHAMES the mindless caricatures of the piece. It is an ecstatic melody, again flawlessly presented. I know, "Air on G String", Bizet Sym. in C slow movement, "Dove sono". "Thine Alone" has them beat.
Did you get to to see Mr. Milnes? I understand the event was yesterday in Asheville. I live close by (GVL), and wish I could have made it. To my ear, Milnes--in his prime--was the finest Italian repertoire baritone America's ever produced (OK . . . let's say it's a tie w/ Warren!). I know it's cliche, but here goes: They don't make 'em like that anymore! BTW, great post, ceb2633--Thanks!
I just watched and listened to this duet for the second time. I loved it the first time, but this time it brought tears to my eyes and rapture to my heart. Thank you ceb2633! Where are you getting these duets by these two great singers? Can you get some more? I love it
A great duet by two great singers! I never saw Beverly in person (DARN!)but I did see Sherrill twice, once as Jack Rance in "La Fanciulla del West"and as Elijah in a performace of that oratorio by the Cathedral Choral Society in 1993. I asked him to sign an LP of hymnns he sang. He looked at that LP and said "My Baby" and signed it. I'm looking forward to meeting him again in Asheville,NC at a reception in his honor this winter at a hotel in Biltmore Village near the Biltmore Estate.
So glad you found it! One of my most treasured recordings. And Bubbles lives forever! I have a couple more on here with the duo, but this is my favorite. Thank you!
Deo gratias! I've been looking for this Beverly Sills, Sherrill Milnes rendition of Thine Alone for years. Thank you! Thank you! Who doesn't love the magnificent Belle Silverman, uh, Beverly Sills? And who can ask for a more-heartfelt duet. Got to go and listen to Thine Alone again, and again, and...
