Those filters was the bomb!!! We had one daaaaamn the clothes came out really clean and with no traces of fiber because of that marvelous filter.... Now we have a Kenmore and its good but never as good as our missed GE
Wow! This brings back memories of the filter flo my mom used to have. It was a great washer and got the job done really well. The only major problem it had was a worn belt (which was replaced with no problem). When we moved, my mom decided to get rid of it.
We now have a Kenmore HE3t and while it also does a great job at cleaning clothes and is more energy efficient, the cycles take FOREVER because of that auto-balance crap. I miss the filter flo. I wish GE still made these!!
@honeyluke Hi, the filter is used for 2 things: dispensing the detergent and filtering the wash and rinse water. You will get a big ball of lint in that pan that you will clean out after the wash.
Filter flo was the best idea ever. When I bought my latest wash machine, I looked for it everywhere but can't find a Filter Flo machine anywhere. It removed lint well and prevented my drains from clogging! Now all that shxx goes down the drain. Not good. And it definitely distributed the soap well. Maybe new manufacturers should get ideas from old machines:???
Yeah it was a good idea, we had a GE with the filter-flo and fabric softener dispenser bowl just like that. My mom bought it back in the early 1980s.
They've done away with Filter-Flo, the new GE's don't have it and none of the other brands do either. This new stuff isn't built half as good as the older stuff, I don't think.
In the '60s Kenmores had the lint trap in the spout, then they started selling them with self-cleaning filters, then they quietly got rid of filters altogether. The public (including me) kept assuming that something in there was catching the lint, but the truth it that your clothes are the only filter on most US machines now. That's why they look like crap if you hang dry them. I guess GE held out for a while, then gave up and went with the pack.
Oh my gosh, that's like the one my grandmother had. I remember when she bought it in 1970. She was afraid to use it at first until someone was in the house with her. That would've been me and my mom.
The basket had many purposes, mainly to filter lint and other debris from the washing water. You also would pour your detergent into the basket and not in the tub (as shown) so that it would not stain the clothing. Older liquid detergents had a tendency to stain clothing if it was left on too long.
What year is this washer I have an 84, these were some of the toughest washers GE built during this era, I aquired mine around 96 or 97, I only had to put a clutch and motor on it due to careless users, it's been going every since and I repeat it's an 84 heavy duty extra capacity.
This machine is one I rebuilt with parts from many decades, control panel on it now is 1960's, new rebuilt tranny, the motor and clutch is from a 1980's machine. Good thing parts from all these eras are interchangeable!
hyy brillant washer but can you tell me what detergent are you using ? & 10x for uploading!

@mateokozhaya I think I was using Arctic Power, a high sudsing Canadian detergent. I still have some of the old stuff with phosphates.

I'm used to using a front loader machine. I find it a bit funny how the top loading machine is jiggling like it is dancing hula hoops :) :)
