The only one bigger than that one that Ive seen lived in our corn crib in Virginia! It was as docile as a kitten! My son and I have one now thats about 3-4 feet long who is still pretty nippy. Sometimes if your slow and gentle they won't bite. I've held some who were gentle until I wasnt looking then WHAM! My son rescues then from yards where they arent wanted! BTW, thanks for saving and releasing this fine specimen!
Caught a 9 foot one when I was in 4th grade. Three of us carried it. I had the head and front, another kid had the snake wrapped around him, and someone else held the back/tail. BTW: they won't bit if your really gentle/nice to them.
I just removed one from the Tree trying to get to the Birds. The Birds were chirping for help so I relocated him to another spot. As always with Black Snakes he bit me good, Black Snakes don't like me.
I had one that was 7 ft. They are awesome. When threatened they coil up and vibrate their tail against the ground to mimic a rattlesnake. Their musk really stinks! I fed him 9 mice at a time cause I like rats:-)
Wow! I didn't know they could grow that size, I've never even seen a bull snake that size. I found one while hiking who looked to be about 4-5 feet long, but he was nowhere near that thick.
very beautiful i used to have a 6 and a half foot grey rat snake, had to give him away to someone in the end tho who could take better care of him as he come with internal parasites that the vets treatment didnt seem to be working on him and was costing me a fortune, i think about him every day wondering if he ever got better
@chueychuey I was just about to write that very same thing! Thank you for that - and thank you, too, usprayvideo! Black ratsnakes are protected where I live and I actually saw one about that size in 2001 while weeding my grape garden. It came right up to me, raised its head, checked me out and then went right past me as I sat within two feet of it - what a beautiful creature!!!
have one living under my outside steps. i have a skin he left for a present. we love him. this is his second season with us ,and has become docile with us. we watched him raid a birds nest in our pine tree.needless to say mama bird was pretty pissed..nature at its best!
@gtarz38 are rat snakes venomous? cause i live hear in chicago and my mom spotted a snake, at our back yard, but first i was a little skeptic, but one morning when i was mowing the lawn one of our neighbors spotted the snake, and i hope it was a rat snake...
@cavanfamily12345 No thier not, Actually rat snake are some of the calmest snake's. me and my dad had caught a six foot one and we had it on a homemade leash and we were walking him around the neighborhood, good times haha
i had to look at this video to see what a rat snake looks klike bc, in my backyard my beagle killed the dm innocent rat snake...that big....i feel sad that the snaked died.
cool, i have one of these i caught at my friends house. I've had him for about 1 year now and he's about 6'2" he's about to shed so i'm hoping that can give me a good and accurate idea on his length. He was mean the first day i had him and ever since that he has been our nicest of 8 snakes.
I came upon one trying to cross a road here in New Jersey. I stopped on the shoulder right next to it in hopes of coaxing it across but instead it made a dash under my car. I got out and looked under there to see it disappearing up into the frame-work of my car. What to do? I drove away but a little ways up the road he decided to drop out. I heard a thump as my rear tire ran over it then in the rear view mirroe I watched it get finished off by a car behind me. What a bummer.
my aunts house isnt finished and there is ging to be an indoor pool. there is a huge hole in the floor that leads to dirt. she has it covered with plywood but snakes still get in. ive found a lot of snake skin and one was actually all in one piece. it was 67 inches long.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to lure a black rat snake out so that I could see them. Like bait them or something?
I am making habitat for them, like rock piles and piles of wood and bark to give them good places to hide. I live on the edge of a large woods and have a large swamp behind my house. I also I have 2 large ponds at my house. actually I'd like to get some snakes and release some of them so I could have more around. Where can I get some? does any one know?
4kidhockey, maybe you can put some eggs out and he will smell them and come get them to eat. But you would have to make some kind of a trap to catch him with. I don't know what kind of trap to make that won't hurt or kill him. You can go to some other bigger lakes and look for snakes there. If you catch them, then you can bring them to your pond to live.
I live in leslie michigan, and 2 years ago I had about a 7 foot black rat snake down in my window well where there are always frogs and salamanders, he got away when we went inside to get the video recorder, he was way cool, he looked at me ,like, come on down if you want some of this. they frogs and salamanders were gone too.
I live around leslie MI, and I had about a 7 foot long black rat snake in my window well where there are always a few frogs and a couple salamanders. We went to get a camera to get him on video but when we came back out a minute or two later he climbed out and was gone. I was pissed.
Cool snake. I got a black rat snake on video not too long ago (the clip is here on Youtube). When I first saw it there was a ground hog sniffing at it and it was in a defensive position. I thought the ground hog was sniffing some dead animal's leg until I got closer and realized what it was.
When I pick up my baby black rat snake, it strikes, but once it's inside of my hands it cools down. Any suggestions on how to make it quite striking when I go to pick it up?

just give him more time to figure out that the hand is not prey or predator, and remember not the place your hand above her/him when you pick it up.
