Tolkki is pretty sloppy nowadays, or actually he's been sloppy for years, especially live. He's definitely NOT at the top. Though, I do think he's made some fantastic solos in the past and his phrasing is great. I actually think that some of his best solos was on early Stratovarius albums like Twilight Time.

Alot of times when you tremolo that fast, your fingers curl up like that, which is why Kirk Hammett tapes his fingers so that he can maintain proper technique. When first started tremolo picking I did that, taped my fingers for a couple of days and later, proper technique was locked in without the tape.

I love metal!! Im cool with solos sounding similar. I mean with everyone ripping it at break neck speeds, and with music in general, its hard to not sound the same. For example, I was just rocking out to some OverKill and heard a hint of "master of puppets" in a tune. I dont mind "hints" or even "tribute" riffs, but blatant rip offs are easy to spot and extremely lame and provide and easy escape route in songwrtit. rather than being creative with anothers idea. We've all done it. Its insperation

Yeah, I do agree with you. A lot of fast solos sound identical, because in reality there's really only so much you can do on a six stringed instrument. This isn't all of Timo's shit though, because his work with Stratovarius has some really well structured solos. A lot of his work with them sounds nothing alike. He is a great guitarist though, and I like how he hardly ever (if ever) uses his pinky.
