Why so many dislikes? It's a high voltage capactior being discharged in a tank of water, it creates a water bubble so hot that it turns into plasma. We don't know if this is what ball lightning is but it's the closest we've come to re-creating it in laboratory conditions, based on what little data there is available about ball-lightning. This is a very good video, thanks poster. PS. it dissapates 100+ times too fast to be smoke.
Andrew, I suggest that the ball has originated with a charge that is equal to or slightly different to the charge of the ambient AIR. Hence, no call for a discharge to the distant ground. Investigate the charge that the atmosphere can hold before a discharge current is precipitated.
Looks like lithium or potassium dropped in water. You can see the small blob still burning on the water after the flame has died down. So flash is likely hydrogen gas self igniting. Color of flame may simply be the lighting conditions at the time of the experiment.
More like a water expirement. THIS IS NOT AN ACTUAL LIGHTNING BALL. Trust me. In fact, I just got through looking this stuff up on Wikipedia. Check for yourself if you don't believe me. But it is still pretty cool.
So...looking things up on Wikipedia makes you an expert on them?
It probably is a water experiment, and nobody's debating that. But whether or not it's the same mechanism as the weather phenomenon known as ball lightning that occurs naturally, who knows? It's too hard to catch a natural occurrence to know exactly what and how it happens.
Anyway, if this isn't the same mechanism, what do you propose IS the mechanism behind ball lightning?
My best guess is that ball lightning is a relatively small volume of air that has been energized by an electric discharge. The ball of plasma created is unable to discharge to ground for some complex and unknown reason. Perhaps a discharge close by to the ball lightning has neutralised the opposite charge of the ground and temperarily given the ball lightning and the ground similar charge. So the plasma ball has nowhere to go and is actually able to remain in place for a period of time.
"It was once seen when a plane (Rather stupidly) flew through an ash cloud that came from a violent volcanic eruption."
Nothing stupid about it. It was nighttime, and back in those days, they didn't pass on volcano information to ATC or the pilots. And they didn't know that it wouldn't show up on weather radar either. They had no way of knowing.
Ball lightning is not St Elmo's Fire... They are two totally different weather side product phenomenon during an electrical storm. This didn't look like either. As someone already pointed out, it looked like a puff of smoke in slow motion, either way cool video.
I saw one but i dont think it was raining. I was talking to my friend and I suddenly saw this bright light when I looked up i saw this perfectly speherical orb radiating a flourescent light slowly ascending. I've always been curious what that was but from what I see on youtube it doesnt look like it, Although it seems like the only logical explanation to me.
ive seen two,but they were kind of greeny coloured.the first was when i was about 9 and came down and dissapeared when it hit the ground, the second was floating above the ground and shot up into the sky and dissapeared, they were the same colour and about the size of footballs.and at the same place.20 years apart.
That sounds exactly like what I saw, although I didnt see when it disappeared. I looked down at my friend to see if he was seeing it too and then it was gone just like that..
Called St Elmo's Fire ... It used to happen on the wooden masteads of ships during seastorms since they were the ONLY thing that high in the ocean and it occasionally happens on land.
what is wrong with all of you? How old is everyone...is this what humanity is coming to...Obviously the person who posted this didnt for 1 second think that they were going to "trick" anyone. Its a pitcher...and they have mislabled it possibly..but what is Dartorx saying...know it alls? What? Are you trying to say that ball lighting doesnt exist or are you just angry because ur stupid?? Serioius question...please answer, i really need to know that ur a mistake.
It's an experiment called "The Water Discharge Experiment" , the first to make it were a bunch of scientists that have something to do with the Max Plank Institute, while trying to explain how Ball Lightnings are made. No one knows fully , but it was a step in order to find out. Look it up...
You people are morons, that IS ball lightning and he's doing it with a candle in a microwave. That's a common way of creating it. Fucking know it alls don't know fucken shit. Shut your retarded mouths up.
Normally when someone gets posts something angry (swearing/name calling) they are being ridiculous. **HOWEVER**, not in this case. I have to agree!!! Thanks for sayin it! If only people could take 5 sec & think before...ok, just THINK. "Obviously" there is a pitcher. To date, I haven't seen a giant pitcher in the sky. It is real flame. Slow motion likely means a "controlled" situation that can be taped. *sigh* Therefore, this is an "EXAMPLE" of ball lighting. Am I wasting my digital breath?
You're mom has a resonant microwave cavity. And she's not self sustained either, I have to get that bitch worked up before she floats up on my balls of lightning. Sometimes when we do it doggy style some ionized gas is expelled from her resonant microwave cavity. So your right about fucking ionized gas.
That looked like a fireball, not ball lightning. Specifically, that had a gaseous look to it, and seeing as lightning is electricity, it would never have a gaseous look to it aside from glare. Seeing as you can see it fading out in large sections around the outside, it's way too dim for glare... can't be ball lightning. Especially not coming out of an old pitcher. :|
Sorry to burst your bubble. But that's not ball lightning. Ball lightning is like an actual ball of electricity that floats about for several moments, between the size of a golf ball and a basketball... it isn't a white mist
It looks like microwave powered plasma. If so, this video is further proof that people aren't making ball lightning in their microwaves, being a nice hot gas it convects away, real ball lightning can not do this. Glad to have seen that without blowing up my own microwave.

AreYouWetYet, St. Elmo's fire is an indicator of high electrical charge in the atmosphere.
It occurs on the masts of ships, tall buildings and sometimes even planes.
It was once seen when a plane (Rather stupidly) flew through an ash cloud that came from a violent volcanic eruption.

Lightning, sparks, ball lightning, plasma clouds, plasma balls, plasma beams:
All are ionized gas.
Ionized from strong electric charges.
When charges move they are not static, they are electrodynamic; current.
Electric current produces electromagnetic fields. These fields can induce electric current or at least voltage (static) in another conductor.
And so on..
