Why so many dislikes? It's a high voltage capactior being discharged in a tank of water, it creates a water bubble so hot that it turns into plasma. We don't know if this is what ball lightning is but it's the closest we've come to re-creating it in laboratory conditions, based on what little data there is available about ball-lightning. This is a very good video, thanks poster. PS. it dissapates 100+ times too fast to be smoke.

Andrew, I suggest that the ball has originated with a charge that is equal to or slightly different to the charge of the ambient AIR. Hence, no call for a discharge to the distant ground. Investigate the charge that the atmosphere can hold before a discharge current is precipitated.

Looks like lithium or potassium dropped in water. You can see the small blob still burning on the water after the flame has died down. So flash is likely hydrogen gas self igniting. Color of flame may simply be the lighting conditions at the time of the experiment.

It probably is a water experiment, and nobody's debating that. But whether or not it's the same mechanism as the weather phenomenon known as ball lightning that occurs naturally, who knows? It's too hard to catch a natural occurrence to know exactly what and how it happens.

Anyway, if this isn't the same mechanism, what do you propose IS the mechanism behind ball lightning?

My best guess is that ball lightning is a relatively small volume of air that has been energized by an electric discharge. The ball of plasma created is unable to discharge to ground for some complex and unknown reason. Perhaps a discharge close by to the ball lightning has neutralised the opposite charge of the ground and temperarily given the ball lightning and the ground similar charge. So the plasma ball has nowhere to go and is actually able to remain in place for a period of time.

Ball lightning is not St Elmo's Fire... They are two totally different weather side product phenomenon during an electrical storm. This didn't look like either. As someone already pointed out, it looked like a puff of smoke in slow motion, either way cool video.

I saw one but i dont think it was raining. I was talking to my friend and I suddenly saw this bright light when I looked up i saw this perfectly speherical orb radiating a flourescent light slowly ascending. I've always been curious what that was but from what I see on youtube it doesnt look like it, Although it seems like the only logical explanation to me.

ive seen two,but they were kind of greeny coloured.the first was when i was about 9 and came down and dissapeared when it hit the ground,the second was floating above the ground and shot up into the sky and dissapeared,they were the same colour and about the size of footballs.and at the same place.20 years apart.

That looked like a fireball, not ball lightning. Specifically, that had a gaseous look to it, and seeing as lightning is electricity, it would never have a gaseous look to it aside from glare. Seeing as you can see it fading out in large sections around the outside, it's way too dim for glare... can't be ball lightning. Especially not coming out of an old pitcher. :|

It looks like microwave powered plasma. If so, this video is further proof that people aren't making ball lightning in their microwaves, being a nice hot gas it convects away, real ball lightning can not do this. Glad to have seen that without blowing up my own microwave.
