I like this ,,you get a feel ,,and see how it is ,,,the train ,trees civil war graves , better than a picture ,The only thing missing is commentary on the graves themselves . Doesn't it say "THE ROAD GOE'S EVER ON " on Berry's grave a reference to Tolken's Hobbit & Lord of the Rings books ,a phase also on Mountain's Live LP cover and a few other places scattered through Rock history .
sucks!!! that they put the fence up!!! i used to go make tombstone rubbings all the time... my little bro even gave duane a hit of acid... i guess its because of people like me that the fence is there in the first place... :)
My wife and I got to see it with out the fence...such a nice place and we just sat reverently...and meditated. We would not have found the graves except for a fluk.A lady got her car stuck in the grave yard.We helped her get it unstuck and asked by chance did she know where the graves were? She was an elderly lady and I thought she might not know of the Allman Brothers. She happened to have family buried near there and led us right to the graves!
I live about 2.5 miles from Rose Hill cemetary. I often ride my Harley around the grounds around daybreak on the weekends. It is a beautiful and serene place to see, or should I say, become a part of. I cut my engine and coast down the winding little paths until I get down by the river and RR tracks. I then have to crank back up to reach the gravesite above.I was glad to see the fence as many left trash, and vandalized their surroundings. If you should ever get the chance to visit. Do It !!
Beautiful place. I saw it a few years ago. Fence was not there. Kids had stolen some items from around the grave, and were partying on them....sort of just like Duane and the band did huh! It really is a nice setting, don't let that train fool you.
Last time I was there 2005 or 06, the graves were just roped off. Berry Oakley's sister is the one who was been SO adamant about keeping the public away from the grave stones...and would bet she is the one who had the fence put up. It's a shame as the stones were never vandalized in over 30 years, aside from the occasional Crown bottle or 'joint' left on Duane's stone. Rest in Peace Broyhers.
Been here a few times since I was 13 - 1973.... Last time was on a Friday morning in November 1996 after my Grandfathers funeral. I sat on the wall right behind Duane and Berry for maybe half an hour. It is the most serene peaceful place even with the tracks and highway nearby. Your walk in, is cool to me Jason - good video!
OK...I was just down at Rose Hill. The fence is bad enough, but is it necessary to GREASE the bars of the prison...? I grabbed the bars and leaned on it and left with stripes on my best tie-dye tee...sonofabitch...!
@Tirnipgreen: Unfortunately there are those who might be tempted to climb the fence--thus the grease. Unfortunately the fence itself became necessary due to those who have vandalized the graves over the years. It dismays fans who come by simply to pay their respects "respectfully" but a few can ruin things for everyone else.
Yes, it is the same cemetery, and yes they are military, but they're Civil War graves, both sides.
It's been a long, long time since I was home in Macon, last time was in 2000. It's more than a little sad to see the fence, and worse to hear of the grease. Not cool.
As for showing the walking to the site, thank you. For those of us who remember that walk, we appreciate it. And the train's part of life in Macon...
@incongra:Yes, Rosehill Cemetary is the same place where the grave of Elizabeth Reed (a Napier) inspired Dickey Betts to write his first great instrumental piece. And those are Civil War graves. It's also the cemetary where an early photo of the band was taken in front of a tomb, with Berry standing above the others on a ledge.
Thanks to the selfish pricks who defaced the gravesites, same thing happened to Ronnie VanZandt and Steve Gaines in Fla. .show respect to the dead please
Wow. When I visited in 1984, there was no fence or steps or any of the architecture pictured in this video. I'm torn: by the "need" for such acoutrements ( we all know about the lack of civility in today's society) and by the obvious resurgence of interest in the Brothers in the last 15-20 years, which is awesome. When I went, New Wave (its alright, y'all...) music was the rage and no one gave a damn about "southern" rock. Duane and the Brothers were the Rosetta Stone for this musician.
I first visited the grave site back around 1974 with the guys in my high school "garage band". It became an every Sunday afternoon ritual for us. There is something almost magical about Rose Hill. The monuments and statuary are incredible. And, except for the occasional freight train passing by, it is very peaceful. We would take our acoustic guitars down there and play for hours sitting by Skydog's and Berry's graves. I'm glad that they have replaced the angels and protected the site...
The gravesites have been vastly improved recently. I'm glad that the long planned-for high iron fence around
Duane and Berry's graves has finally been erected. Although it's nice to think that one should be able to walk up and lay flowers on the graves of our heros, too many fools have vandalized their graves to allow public access any longer. It's better to keep visitors at a distance. I wonder if they'll ever expand the fence so all the original brothers can one day lie beside each other?

God rest their souls even with that noisy train

It's beautiful, the train is a nice Robert Johnson-esque southern touch. She's obviously batty though. No need for the prison fence.

Is this the same cemetery that has the "In memory of Elizabeth reed" headstone in it?
Also, I take it those are military graves on the way in. Are they WWII graves?

They just put the fence up last year because of some A-Hole who deface the graves.
