now this was BALLSY !!! Not trying to sound derogatory nor ugly, but rather meant as a COMPLIMENT, not a diss whatsoever. ROCK ON !!! Nice tornado !!!! (I'm petrified of them, but some just look cool.)
I had a encounter with the same situation once. It's scary, when you live in Indiana things can get ugly. Luckly the funnel never touched ground in my case. Neat video! :)
i remember this. i hate tornadoes haha. i was driving by 103rd street and saw it over a building and flipped out. we went and sat in the kmart parking lot and watched several form and then go back up into the sky. such a bittersweet thing,
I used to have an apartment right on the St. John's river in J'ville. As you cross the Matthews Bridge into Arlington, you can see my old apartment on the right, a literal stones throw from the bridge. I had an excellent view of downtown right from my living room. Well, I moved back to Atlanta on the VERY day this happened. As I listened to the weather reports I was SO PISSED! If I had been in J'ville for ONE MORE DAY I could have seen it! wow!! you guys are freakin nuts,lol....mad, mad, mad, props, for real...i hope you did have a basement you were planning on going to incase it touched down right where you guys stood cause it was right over ya
@gabrielgcox — just so you know, I may have done exactly what you did. hard to take video when a tornado becomes your had — lol — good job. most of all, great that you got what you did!!
why on earth did you got to zoom when you had an amazing view of the rotation — what a truly missed moment you had. Just because you have the zoom does not mean you use it all the time. You had one of the most amazing shots and didn't know it.
@USEditor hindsight is 20/20. you'd be surprised what you don't think about when a tornado is passing over your building. next time i'm underneath a funnel i'll think clearer.
I wish I could see a Tornado or lighting or something. America is lucky, they get all that kind of things. In Scotland all you get is bad rain storms, floods, thunder and the worst weather ever.
I am from Jax, Fl. born and raised. I absolutely love thunder storms but can honestly say that I never saw a tornadoe while living there. I am glad, too, cuz they are nothing but God's power in his pinky! awesome to watch! but only from a distance.
it did touch down, but luckily only as a very weak tornado. it was strong enough to knock a few trees down on some cars and tear siding off of buildings though.
If it's on land it is a tornado. Basically it's going from being a waterspout to a landspout. The debris showed that it was on the ground. And if it had formed on land and went on out into the ocean, then it would be a tornado changing over to waterspout. And there is a such thing as a tornadic waterspout also. Tornadic meaning that it spawns from a tornadic supercell like you see in the plains states. Also the Miami tornado is a good example of a waterspout becoming a strong tornado on land.
well, it's not a tornado, it's a waterspout. very different than a tornado, once they hit land they usually die out pretty quickly so there would be no cause for alarm if you are on land, unlike a tornado.
actually it was a confirmed EF-0 tornado by the National Weather Service. it started as a waterspout, but as soon as it moved on land it was classified as a tornado and did knock down some trees that destroyed two cars.
i'm from jax, my mom lives off of san jose, near the st.johns. she was out walking her dog, and happened to look up, i was actually talking to her on our cell phones.
That was the best tornado footage I've ever seen! You should definitely send that in to the weather channel or somewhere if you haven't already. Lol @ what bookshika said
You guys are crazy!!! But thanks for the wonderful footage...
The last tornado like that in Jacksonville was in January of 1996 when it did damage along Cassat Avenue doing major damage to all of the car dealerships.
you are far more brave than I am. I would have dropped dead right then and there. You captured amazing footage, better than anything I have ever saw on tv.......
OMG i remember that! it ended up closing down part of the road from debree for like half an hr it was insane was the first tornado i had actually seen
Man, that was fantastic footage! Truthfully though, and take it from a guy who has chased the midwest for 25 yrs....you all should have quit filming and gone underground. That circulation could have amped up in a nano-second, and you could have been very dead. I'll give you all credit for having brass ones.....even the lady! But next time......
dude that is magnificent footage , i was driving down the buckmann bridge towards san jose exit when i saw the waterspout..i stopped for maybe 2 minutes at the top of the bridge [no camera :( ] but the waterspout lasted maybe around 8 minutes total it was an amazing thing to see without acctually seeing any damage or someone getting hurt from the weather..then i traveled san jose upwards towards hendricks ave/san marco and POW all hell broke loose heheh.. incredible footage you guys have
My wife and I followed the path the storm rotation took and found two uprooted trees (one very large), scores of large branches down, and even some large portions of siding ripped from some local house.
You removed my comment?? LOL you're an idiot! It wasn't a Tornado over your head. I've been a chaser for almost 8 years. It wasn't formed yet over you guys.
I'm a former navy meteorologist and can clearly say, this was a weak, EF0 tornado. The fact it produced no visible damage, and with no pictures to prove the damage that you saw, it will be classified an EF-0, th weakest kind, if the NWS decides this video is enough evidence. I'll call them back tomorrow or Monday and see what is up. My estimatimation is that winds were about 50mph, 60 at the most.
The rotating wind field directly under the funnel exceeded 60mph as it crossed the street, uprooting two trees, downing dozens of 5-7in diameter branches, and tearing siding off of at least one home. I am under the impression that this would catagorize it as at least and EF-0. My wife, three blocks east and outside of the rotating wind field described the air as "Still" for the duration of the storm. I am confused as to the persistence of this being labeled a funnel cloud.
EF-0 is ranged from 65-85mph. After 86mph and up, it goes EF-1, etc. I have studied many storms and can say, at max, 60mph seems quite firm, maybe 70mph, but that may be pushing it. These large trees, we need to know what type, but also the rapid change of wind direction can cause many trees to fail, even if they seem sturdy. The fact no shingles appear to have been ripped off or flying also shows that it was no more than 70mph, if that.
google FirstCoast News and check out the homepage story of a tree that was uprooted and destroyed a vehicle. This a third tree that was uprooted in the path that this tornado took and only 4 blocks north of where i shot this video.
I don't need to google anything. All I'm saying is this was not a Tornado at the time it went "OVER YOUR HEADS" maybe 4 blocks away it either dissipated or formed.
You're trying to argue with a meteorologist here, just fyi. The winds clearly shift in the video almost a full 180. They were on the wesern edge of the rotation and is clearly evident. How would you explain a palm frawn at least 60ft in the air moving around the apparent rotation. After it moves past the trees on the other side of Oak St., you can clearly see a circular and upward motion of the small debris.
I never argued with you, nor did I comment directly to you. I back checked the radar at the time of this event. It's clearly a funnel at the time of this video. The funneling winds will create an updraft and obvious change in wind direction as you would know. I've been under something very similar to this. If you noticed, the debris field was only concentrated visually about 100ft above the ground, not on the ground. Nonetheless, great video and many memories to live with!
Although the fact that radar has nothing to do with verifying if this was a funnel cloud or tornado. How would you explain clearly visible rotation at tree top level with small limbs being airborne, they didn't just magically get there. For those objects to become airborne, you have to have ground level rotation, which constitutes a tornado. I can not stress this fact enough. Now, I am conferencing with the NWS and they're looking into this quite hard and a final decision should be made soon.
The NWS in Jacksonville confirmed last night that this was an EF0 tornado. It was on the ground for less than a quarter of a mile, but it did remain on the ground as it passed from the St. Johns River, skirted my office building, and moved northward lifting just before I-10.
Was this vid taken in Riverside? The houses look like that area... I saw this tornado on the riverbank here in San Jose... i'm right on the river... that was close enough for me!
As a Kansas storm spotter, all I can say is---You are NUTS! We should be nominating you for a Darwin award about now... But that is some wicked cool footage! Glad you're okay.

I notified the NWS JAX when I saw this video. They may, upon reviewing further, classify this as a weak, EF0 tornado.
