@trekranger Most carvers start with Basswood, but it depends on the type of carving you want to do: Relief, or sculpture being the most popular. For sculpture, Basswood is fine to start with. I prefer a harder wood for relief, like Birch, or Walnut.
There's a lot of good tutorial videos nowadays. you can check some out on youtube. Good luck, & thank you.
@squidskunk I had some health related problems, & I had to put the project on hold, but now things are much better, & I'd like to get back on track. I also had a little problem with the type of wood used on this. it's real brittle for this kind of fine detailed carving. I recently soaked it up with Walnut oil, & see if that helps after it cures. The Co. said this was Cherry. I think it may be too dry causing the brittleness. I may try crazy glue if the oil doesn't work.
Hey Chipncut, I also get brittle wood after wood was a long time without being worked on. I think it's a question of moisture. When this happens, I put the piece into a plastic bag with a wet spongious tissue for a few days (just time for the piece of wood to get wet again). The wet tissue must not be in contact with wood otherwise there will be some stains.
Very good job you show here. I hope your health is better now.
i just started wood carving my question is .what is a good wood to start with ?
