Years back, I used to sometimes play on a short 9-hole golf course with a few friends. One day one was away, another was ill, the other had car trouble, so I went round alone, just for the practice with my Walkman on and 461 Ocean Boulevard in my ears. I usually shot between 31 and 35, on what is a challenging little course, with hidden, uneven greens. With this music to chill me, I fired off a 26! I've never bettered 30 since then.
Mainline Florida refers to US Highway A1A which runs from St. Augustine (Jax area) all the way down to Miami, and is never more than a few blocks from the actual beach.
@FatTonyCologino ----Actually , buttwipe....US 1 goes all the way to MAINE , as does I-95 .....A1A is a sub-highway that runs the eastern spine of FL only. There is NO A1A in Georgia, the Carolina's or Virginia. Kindly know WTF you are ankle biting about before making yourself look like a knuckle dragging neanderthal.... Oops... yer from Jersey... too late...
@FiltersRus it merges with 95 where 95 ends or starts however you wanna look at it i personally look at it as an extension of 95 aka the fuckin turnpike. Kindly know WTF you are ankle biting before you make yourself look like a arrogant redneck cocksucker ...ooops ..yer from florida ...too late ...
@FiltersRus 1&9 in jerz runs parallel to 95 they're practically on top of each other. i was not being literal in my original comment maybe i should rephrase that for you " you can drive straight down the new jersey turnpike right onto the a1a LIKE IT'S THE SAME ROAD !" Of course i know they are not the same road why else wud they have diff names herpa derpa? Its better to appear foolish than open your mouth and remove all doubt. I say if its already thought then you have nothing to lose.
@FiltersRus you stated that you weren't from FLORIDA and that in your state route 1 and 95 were miles away from each other so therefore i related the positions of 1 and 95 in my state as a comparison. Obviously the point has went well over your head.
@FatTonyCologino -------------Keep up ... I know its REAL hard.. I said I wasnt from Florida ONLY when you said "..ooops ..yer from florida ...too late ..."
You are adding 1+1 and getting an atomic bomb. And here I thought our schools sucked.....
@FiltersRus what the fuck is the point you're trying to make ? That you are exactly the idiot I think you are ? It seems redundant to tell me something I already know.
You say you are not from Florida then tell me we're talking about Florida not jersey lol and i'm the idiot, fuck off ...
@FatTonyCologino Sorry Sparky.. not from Florida, and US 1 and I-95 are literally 120 miles apart as they go thru my state, so them being interchangeable is about as accurate as " I'll only stick the head in"
Highway A1A starts in Miami and stops at St. Augustine. The highway that replaces it going thru Georgia and the Carolinas is US 17.
Keep your mouth closed and the world may think you a fool. Open it and there is no longer any doubt.
Sallie46 is correct RE: 461 OB. Funny thing is- the house is located on the east(ocean) side of OB and can easily be seen from the road, since OB is in fact A1A and a 4-lane HIGHWAY. Drove by the place many times in the early/mid 80's driving between Kendall and Hollywood, FL. Movie " The Right Stuff" gives the WRONG impression that you have to cross A1A to get to beach when exact opposite is true. Grissom hotel shots are WEST COAST, not east. This is a long-lost cut for me. Thx for the memory
Hey, thanks for the info! I'll have to write that down and check into it. Is that like a term that locals use or something? This song has always mystified me and I could never find anything on it. I love songs that are evocotive of places and this one is sparse on lyrics but great. Does anyone know how often EC has played this live in the last twenty years or so? I assume it's somewhat like Bruce Springsteen playing Stolen Car at the show you're at. NEVER GONNA HAPPEN TO YOU BUDDY!!!!
songwriter extraordinaire.... Toss some leftovers to the rest of us monkeys trying in vain to write 1 of your album leftovers... all bs aside... TY E C for your grace and ridiculous talent.
I think mainline Florida is a train line. Hank Jr. has a song called Orange Blossom Special about a train line to/in Florida. I think this is Eric's song about same. I love this song along with "The Core".
@ThrustProp , No Main Line Florida means Jupiter inlet to S. Miami beach , A1A "took a Cruise down Hotel row!" Specificaly the Gold , and Treasure coasts ,..beeen there , lived that
Most artists best songs, edgiest songs, most technically difficult or interesting songs aren't on the greatest hits albums. Clapton's no different, just that his edgier songs are still fantastic, hooky, and jammin all the way around. The guy is just amazing.

@HunterSThompsonFan I think it's about l the experience he had recording this album (in general) in Florida. They used the house on Ocean Blvd that's on the album cover as their studio ...he was off junk and trying to create without it. His autobiography, Clapton talks a bit about it.
I just picked up 461 Ocean Blvd, and it's awesome. What a way to end the album. Brilliant! No wonder Eric doesn't play that song often. He should reconsider.
Interesting. I listened to Post Toastee from Tommy Bolin, then Bang a Gong from Marc Bolan, and then this. There's a common thread in the sound, not sure what it is, but it might just be the sound at the time...
It was the production "sound" at the time, then again it was the 70's - the Miami hats, the Hawaian shirts, the white pants, the hedonistic lifestyle, the good cocaine etc......... it was rock n roll , Fla. style! (at least for this tune)
@advokris Good call! I always thought so, too. I love both songs, although I must say that "The Core" (recorded 4 years later in 1978) has a more complex riff, even though the bass/rhythm is slower. Love both songs, though!
This is one of those all-time great cruzin-of-friday-night songs. Made me want to do 70 thru town back in Indiana. Of course that means I'd of made it thru that little town in about 3.5 minutes in my '76 chevy van. hehe Had the Zodiac signs on the side! 70's were a firggin trip! Miss 'em
