  • Just picked this up for $2.99- pretty surprised at how cheap it was for being one of the great SNES titles.

  • love this game, was one of the first games i got for snes. still have it today.

  • My gag

  • just the music is enough to keep me interested for a while

  • Blue beam: Sin(θ)

    Red beam: -Sin(θ)

  • does this whole fucking series consist of different remakes of the same game? No fucking innovation anywhere. Every r-type game i've seen consists of the same fucking shit with somewhat different backgrounds. The levels and enemies are just the same.

  • This is a classic example of an impossible SNES game; you know, back when videogames were actually difficult. I bought this game over 13 years ago and TO THIS DAY i've never even gotten to the last level on hard mode. Which is awesome. If you can beat this game on hard, you're clearly not human.

  • @yubbone you and me both friend.

  • I think the background designer(s) needed a bigger color palette, not to say that the backgrounds are THAT bad, but I wouldn't be surprised if this got\gets a remake.

  • Best $3.99 I've ever spent on a used game

  • first video game i ever played ^^

  • very hard game... and thats what makes it so good!

  • The sound is out of sync...

  • I miss this game .... I need my super nintendo back so it can bring me back to my childhood

  • @Acompony

there are emulators, you run te program that emulates the SNES, and files called ROMS are the games.. I tried it once, had 2 weeks of nostalgia!

  • I love this game... :( -3!!

  • I remember having this game when I was younger, jeez dude this game showed no fuckin mercy at all, I couldn't even make it past the first stage lmao thats how hard this game is, plus the fact that theres no checkpoints -_-

  • Wow! I played this game when I was five and I made it only ONE time to the final boss and he killed me lol. I played it yesterday and killed him as a revenger for 11 years of abstinence *gg

  • Am the only one who realizes this is just a port of the R-Type 2 arcade game?

  • this game is hard as fuck

  • ive ordered this game for my super nintendo :D ill be getting it next week ;)

  • x box just gave away this game on live arcade

  • one of the gretest games i have ever played and the musik is amazing :)

I just remember my childhood every time my cousin played the game he asked me should i kill the boss fast or should i play with him:)

  • one of the gretest games i have ever played and the musik is amazing :)

  • I love this game!

  • makes me wish i had nevr lost my super nintendo

  • the second level soundtrack is epic!!!

  • my favourite R-Type!!!

  • My first SNES rent. At first i didn't like it. But i was really sad to return it. Then i realized that it was a great game.

  • I had memories of this game but couldn't find out what it was called, thanks! this is the one!

  • I can't help but laugh seeing the SNES drop frames when there are more than 10 enemies in screen... HAHA

  • @LoekSijbers: Those come in handy in hard mode, if you need time and stuff lol.

  • To this day, I still don't know who left this game at my house. Whoever it was, thanks lol!

  • i beat this game in my first try

  • @Blunkins

    now THATS impressive

    YOU'RE hardcore

    CONGRATS

  • @Blunkins

I know, cheats are really great aren't they... :-)

  • the recharging noise of the beam brings back memories!

  • as a kid, one of the hardest games i played, i couldn't get passed the first few levels

  • I never could finish it :D

  • i remember this game. love it and one of my favorite snes games. i had this game, very hard once u get far in the game. i used to play this all day when i was a kid. not sure what happened to the game and my snes doesnt work no more so i threw it away. -_-

  • cool

  • i remember renting this when i was a kid and i actually never returned it lol

    it was so good

  • love dis game!! 1st game i got 4 my super NES... Classic!

  • Man, I've been playing this all week with a Fighter Stick SN. What is up with having to start the whole level again when you die? This game is so damn unforgiving. Awesome music for a game released so early.

  • This game is set on easy!!!!!

  • I loved this game when

i was 4 and I still love it!

  • I love this game <3

  • I am seriously about to dig my SNES out the closet man

  • Level 3 always pwned me whenever I played this when I was little, but when I played it much older, I had a lot more fun with it. It's good to see a game that doesn't lose its value as it ages, but just gets better. This game is like a fine wine. :)

  • You haven't lived until you've played this game on a home theater system!!!!

  • The music and sound effects of this game really pushed the boundaries of what the audio chips were capable of producing! Tons of awesome reverb effects, for example.

I also liked the hexadecimal (base 16) counting system, like in the option menu.

  • A combination of awesome music and fuckin awesome gameplay, as well as insane details in the game itself, makes for one classic beast of a game. R-TYPE ROCKS THE FAN!!!!

  • you know, after you finish the game on hard mode, you will unlock the pro mode!

  • You can one-shot the first boss by getting a hang of the beam charge at the ideal time that the fight initiates.

Charge the beam, and the second the boss makes his first pause at the lower-right of the screen, get as close as possible and blow him to shreds.

  • Super R-Type comes with an extra level.

  • I always played U.N Squadron over this game for some reason... they were both fun games, its too bad my SNES dosn't work anymore :/

  • i loved this game when i was little but hard as hell

  • The human sprites at the intro sequence are pretty tiny! You can hardly see them!

  • so whats the difference between super r-type for snes and r-type for the turbo graphics 16?

  • Super R-Type is a remix/remake, so you can consider it a whole new game. R-Type on PC Engine is a preety much arcade perfect port of the arcade original, but sadly, it only has 4 levels on each cart, so you will need to buy both R-Types to get the full game.

  • @ShiryuGL Well that's true, For The JP Version, US got it all in one kart.

  • @swarrior216 TG16 version is a port of R Type 1 where as Super R Type is based on R Type II (though about half the levels are exclusive to Super R Type).

However TG16 was split into two carts in some territories (as has been pointed out) and the second cart is referred to as R Type 2 which kind of makes things confusing as it's just the second half of R Type!!

  • i was only eight years old when i used to play this game.

  • This does look very familiar, I played it years ago, and I don't really remember it.

  • The level 4 song (mothership) is freaking awesome!

  • all the stuff on xbox live arcade is shit compared to this

  • this game is fucking hardcore

  • @xfilesmanson True. I never saw STAGE3 in 20 years... :/

  • @xfilesmanson lol, i hear ya. :D

  • @xfilesmanson

When I finished it, it was the best day of my life. lol

  • THIS GAME IS AWESOME!!!!!!

  • My grandparents have this game and a SNES :)

  • what was the other game like this that had walking robots (not robocop) on the snes

  • Cybernator?

  • Metal Warriors (REALLY HARD game!)

  • omg i used to play this when i was a kid, i could hardly get pass the levels -.- i wonder how well will i do if i play it now o.o

  • holy fuck!last time i played this was....in 1995!!!:(

  • now this was a great shoot em up, and i just remebered the slow down and the flickering graphics as nintendo decided to put a slow processor in it lol still 1 of the best and hardest games on the snes graham

  • I loved Super R-Type, but Thunderforce 3 and 4 are my favourite 16-bit shooters.

I certainly don't think Thunderforce 4 would be possible on the SNES.

  • great game

  • its classic but I think you played it to much "herolike"! (no offence)

  • classic

  • Shit, I remember playing this back in the SNES days, was one of my favorites :)

  • most kick ass game ever

  • When I see this, I have nostalgic fun, too ^^

  • i loved the music in this

  • damn i miss this game T_T must get lolz

  • i remember this game! it was so freaken fun

  • Apparently this used to suffer from bad slowdown as the Snes had quite a slow processor...

  • Indeed, the central processor run at 3'56Mhz (the Sega Genesis ran at 7'21Mhz), but developers obtained better results with the SNES basically because that central processor simply coordinated the calculations of four extra parallel processors. The Sega Genesis had to focus all those processes on a single part of its structure, which finally allowed the SNES to step forward in many games (especially bi-platform ones, providing they were not made by EA, which had better results with Sega).

  • What do you know about the tech specs of the Amiga 500 (my favorite retro machine) and how it compared to the megadrive and snes?

  • Your explanation is totally bogus.

First, the 65816 is indeed a slow beast, because it is basically an 8 bit CPU (only 8bit data bus!) which can handle 16 bit data formats natively (as some 8 bit CPU's like Z80 and 6809 before it).

However, what does a 2D game basically need? The CPU is mostly occupied with moving data around, instead of doing expensive calculation. For that, the SNES has 8 DMA channels which can copy data around fast. THAT is the key to gain speed out of the SNES.

  • However, the Sega Megadrive also has a DMA channel to move data around quite fast. That combined with the hugely superior 68000 CPU (which can handle 32bit datatypes and has a real 16bit bus) will ALWAYS outperform the SNES.

SNES games can only compensate that by having more colourful graphics and much better sound.

  • and being better games

  • You have every right to get voted down because you're calling everyone one of the worst cuss words yet.

  • Now that you come back intelligently I can easily understand, but you use that word a teeny bit too much. Since I know it's one of the worse cuss words ever invented.

  • @DXSnakeEaterishacked

Well, then let's change it to "braindead zombies", okay? ;)

  • I didn't exactly have a problem with using that word too be honest, you just used it like a ton of times. "Braindead Zombies" is a pretty good one too.

  • ??? I just used it one time, because I was pretty pissed. For most people, Internet is not about obtaining knowledge, but : "Uhhh, this guy said something mean to my MegaDrive/SNES, lets vote him DOOOWN!!!".

Anyone coding on the actual hardware will agree that the SNES is pretty slow, that DMA transfers are the saving grace of this architecture, and that you can make it up by making the games look and sound more beautiful. I coded on the SNES and know how it works.

  • Taking advantage of the SNES takes a lot of extra effort, and the early games show that the developers didn't have enough experience to accomplish that. Super R-Type shows when the SNES is coded "straightforward".

Another problem is that the 65816 is a pretty uncommon processor, compared to the 68000 which was used in lots of Arcade games and home computers. In the end, if you put a lot of blood and sweat into it, you can make exciting action games on the SNES (R-Type 3, Super Turrican II).

  • Man, I had this game forever! I didnt know it was a lauch title..haha. EVen my mom loved this game

  • man iremember back when i was kid my brother had a SNES and i was a kid back in the n64 days so SNES was my old skool console. man r-type was my favourite game i memorized where each enemy would come out i had it down it was sick!

  • damn this game brings me back! soooo many membories of good times THE TRACK KICK ASS I REMEBER WHEN U USED TO DANCE TO THEM WITH MY SISSTER.

  • this was my game it had some sweet music 2 go along with it as well! thanx man this brings back so many memories! =)

  • Wow, I forgot how good the soundtrack to this game was.

  • One the best game soundtracks out!!!

  • Awsome game, indeed it was.

You may want to check out my current programming project Havoc: see /watch?v=p5dVuDQxzLU&fmt=18

    (there's an alpha download available!)

  • this is the same game than r-type2 for arcade,or the 2 games are diferents?

  • great game and great soundtrack! played it in 1992! wow r-type rocks! :)

  • Is this game hard? I´ve just recently downloaded R-Type III on Virtual Console. And that game is a pain in the ass. So is this game easier or harder?

  • ya this game is hard but i played it when i was really young but i had the remake for the psx and that wasnt to bad cos u had infinte continues

  • Yeah, in R-Type III is there also infinite continues. But the game is still hard as ****!

  • 100% pure epic awesome. this game is a legend among shooters. i was pretty good at this back in the day

by the way i was in a club tonight in helsinki, finland. i almost shit myself, when they started showing r-type game footage on screen during a dj-set. fuck yeah! :D

  • awesome dude. simply awesome.

  • i beat the shit out of that game on hard great sound track

  • i havent played this in years but is still rememberd this ausom music

  • wow for it being on easy you sure arent that good....try playing on the hardest level of difficulty....only to play on expert if you manage to beat it.....then the game is totally impossible to beat...kinda....yea try that...

  • god that music brings back some good memories.

  • i used to play r-type all the time when i had it. do you know how to get a pc download of it?

  • When this came out, these were by far the most amazing music tracks/sfx I had ever heard in a game before!

Everyone talks about how superior the arcade versions were ('avoid Super R-Type!'); but when I finally played them sometime later, the dramatic difference in the audio made the experience rather underwhelming. :P

  • HAHA! you couldn't even kill that thing what destroyed you! have you ever finished the last big boss? I mean... You are playing it at novice! it can't be that hard! Believe me.

  • nice song

  • Recuerdo que tenía este videojuego cuando era pequeño...

  • Me and my brother were playing this game this summer... Gosh, it brought up good old memories...

I love it even though I always lose :)

Super Nintendo was and will always be the best. :)

  • I agree, and I am a huge sony fan myself, no console will ever reach Super nintendo's greatness

  • Great game. I have it on the wii from the Virtual Console. I am still at level 4 on normal. Remember level 4? the giant airship? It took me a while to beat level 2 and 3.

  • anybody finished it in hard ?

  • The Stage 1 music was the best.

Too bad this game so was freaking hard!

  • Awesome game.

  • ...

  • This game is not for the meek or impatient! To this day, I still can't easily get to level 4 on normal without getting my ass handed to me a few times. I especially love how there's no respawns, saves or checkpoints...AT ALL!! Now I need to just find a copy of R-Type Delta.

  • The game looks great but I'm noticing a lot of slowdown

  • In this game, slowdown is the best thing you can get... Until it stops and you crash into a wall. Then it sucks.

  • the different difficulty levels change that!!!

  • gotta love the music

  • What R-Type should I play? I have different emulators, and I have the GBC release of R-Type I/II. I was wondering, the TG-16 version of I/II has great graphics; were they the original arcade versions or a remake?

  • Get a arcade emulator and get the R-Type games from the arcade. Get this also ( its for the snes. Get R-Type III for SNES. Get R-TYPE DX for the gameboy color. Do you have a PS1? then get R-Type for the PS1? Then get R-Type Delta for the PS1

  • eeee

  • has anyone ever played Blood Money for the old ass Omega computers? is this the same game or is a very good rip off? I am thinking of getting it for the virtual console

  • R-Type is a well-known series that's been around since the mid-80s. It catapulted the shmup genre. I have never heard of Blood Money, but I seriously doubt R-Type ripped anything off. And do you mean Amiga, not Omega?

  • mom wheres my SNES?

  • i love the song when the ship launches. its bad ass. someone make a remix thats worthy (the one on ocremix sucks)

  • Again a blast from the past! YAY

  • Yeah the sound track rocks in this game.. i made the mistake of getting R-Type 3 in the VC and NOW super r-type comes out.. im mad....

  • May anyone tell me a Super Nintendo game like this?I think, one of the levels it has something like a plant-type world. If so,please reply to this

  • Conan2682680 I think your talking about Darius Twin?

  • Gradius III maybe?

  • Yes,that is the game I want.Thank you very much.

  • mmm... it looks like the inside of a creature for me, but who knows...

  • AWESOME MUSIC I still have this cardrige and the prev versions Is better than some modern games of the genre

  • Darn right! I never got past the third level if my memory serves me right, but the soundtrack was one of the things that kept me coming back for more. Time to dust off the SNES methinks. My studies shall have to suffer...

  • im sure most of yall kno this but i have a tip for beating most of the bosses. jus get up close to them and charge ur gun and when it full release it at point blank range. instant death for most bosses.

  • other then 1943 & U.N. Squadron, Super R-Type was/is deffanetly the best 2D shooter ever:)

  • man...i was just playin this on my snes emu....no offense but i beat it on hard...pro is a bitch to play....this game is addicting for me...i'm 28 now and i've been playing on and off for many years...never gets old for me...thanx for the upload!! keep gaming!!

  • no..your comment is horrible..stfu this game rox

  • The Music is awesome, zerogun91 obviously hasn't played any other SHMUPS..

  • R-Type is the greatest shooters of all time. R-Type series is my personal favorite, too. (^_^) I'm pretty good at Shmups to be honest.

  • This game sucked because it had no checkpoints.

  • I hope this comes out on the Wii. I bought the original R-Type though.

  • dang we need to hang out reeal soon.....lol

  • yeah me too but nothing beats the classics,.....philosima was the last good one.....1st generation playstation game....and the one from square...Einhander was good

  • yes..i actually have that game...i was a shooter junkie back in those days...gradius,darius twin, life force, had 'em all

  • this along with Axelay were the best shooters on Snes

  • Actually, I personally think R-Type 3 was better. But then, I had this classic for actual SNES and because of it, I'm such a shooter fan today, so this game aint that bad ^^' I cant belive I beated this up when I was young, this game doesnt have checkpoints or anything...

  • yeah but being able to sit thru the game and beat it in one sitting is what made it fun....hmmmm you'll kill me but i never played r3..guess i better pick it up

  • They give players so much slack today its sad -.-;;

  • indeed. time flies by soo fast. i used to be like 7 or 8 when i played it... and now i'm...20?shinjirarenee

  • oh man, that sure brings back memories. i used to play this game over 10 years ago....

  • Don't You think that Last Hope (for DC and NEoGeo) is a lot like Super R-Type?

  • ShiryuGL,

R-Type 3 the Third Lightning is a far challenging game...especially stage 4....DAMNED BOSS!!!
