does this whole fucking series consist of different remakes of the same game? No fucking innovation anywhere. Every r-type game i've seen consists of the same fucking shit with somewhat different backgrounds. The levels and enemies are just the same.
This is a classic example of an impossible SNES game; you know, back when videogames were actually difficult. I bought this game over 13 years ago and TO THIS DAY i've never even gotten to the last level on hard mode. Which is awesome. If you can beat this game on hard, you're clearly not human.
I think the background designer(s) needed a bigger color palette, not to say that the backgrounds are THAT bad, but I wouldn't be surprised if this got\gets a remake.
I remember having this game when I was younger, jeez dude this game showed no fuckin mercy at all, I couldn't even make it past the first stage lmao thats how hard this game is, plus the fact that theres no checkpoints -_-
Wow! I played this game when I was five and I made it only ONE time to the final boss and he killed me lol. I played it yesterday and killed him as a revenger for 11 years of abstinence *gg
i remember this game. love it and one of my favorite snes games. i had this game, very hard once u get far in the game. i used to play this all day when i was a kid. not sure what happened to the game and my snes doesnt work no more so i threw it away. -_-
Man, I've been playing this all week with a Fighter Stick SN. What is up with having to start the whole level again when you die? This game is so damn unforgiving. Awesome music for a game released so early.
Level 3 always pwned me whenever I played this when I was little, but when I played it much older, I had a lot more fun with it. It's good to see a game that doesn't lose its value as it ages, but just gets better. This game is like a fine wine. :)
The music and sound effects of this game really pushed the boundaries of what the audio chips were capable of producing! Tons of awesome reverb effects, for example.
I also liked the hexadecimal (base 16) counting system, like in the option menu.
A combination of awesome music and fuckin awesome gameplay, as well as insane details in the game itself, makes for one classic beast of a game. R-TYPE ROCKS THE FAN!!!!
Super R-Type is a remix/remake, so you can consider it a whole new game. R-Type on PC Engine is a preety much arcade perfect port of the arcade original, but sadly, it only has 4 levels on each cart, so you will need to buy both R-Types to get the full game.
@swarrior216 TG16 version is a port of R Type 1 where as Super R Type is based on R Type II (though about half the levels are exclusive to Super R Type).
However TG16 was split into two carts in some territories (as has been pointed out) and the second cart is referred to as R Type 2 which kind of makes things confusing as it's just the second half of R Type!!
now this was a great shoot em up, and i just remebered the slow down and the flickering graphics as nintendo decided to put a slow processor in it lol still 1 of the best and hardest games on the snes graham
Indeed, the central processor run at 3'56Mhz (the Sega Genesis ran at 7'21Mhz), but developers obtained better results with the SNES basically because that central processor simply coordinated the calculations of four extra parallel processors. The Sega Genesis had to focus all those processes on a single part of its structure, which finally allowed the SNES to step forward in many games (especially bi-platform ones, providing they were not made by EA, which had better results with Sega).
First, the 65816 is indeed a slow beast, because it is basically an 8 bit CPU (only 8bit data bus!) which can handle 16 bit data formats natively (as some 8 bit CPU's like Z80 and 6809 before it).
However, what does a 2D game basically need? The CPU is mostly occupied with moving data around, instead of doing expensive calculation. For that, the SNES has 8 DMA channels which can copy data around fast. THAT is the key to gain speed out of the SNES.
However, the Sega Megadrive also has a DMA channel to move data around quite fast. That combined with the hugely superior 68000 CPU (which can handle 32bit datatypes and has a real 16bit bus) will ALWAYS outperform the SNES.
SNES games can only compensate that by having more colourful graphics and much better sound.
I'm not calling everyone a cunt, I'm calling those idiots who anonymously vote me down without challenging my statements a cunt. Big difference, though I know that reading comprehension is an ability which applies, let's be generous, maybe to 5%-7% of the internet users.
Which of cource makes those voting me down a second time, yet still fail to engage in any meaningful discussion, double cunts. ;)
Now that you come back intelligently I can easily understand, but you use that word a teeny bit too much. Since I know it's one of the worse cuss words ever invented.
I didn't exactly have a problem with using that word too be honest, you just used it like a ton of times. "Braindead Zombies" is a pretty good one too.
??? I just used it one time, because I was pretty pissed. For most people, Internet is not about obtaining knowledge, but : "Uhhh, this guy said something mean to my MegaDrive/SNES, lets vote him DOOOWN!!!".
Anyone coding on the actual hardware will agree that the SNES is pretty slow, that DMA transfers are the saving grace of this architecture, and that you can make it up by making the games look and sound more beautiful. I coded on the SNES and know how it works.
Taking advantage of the SNES takes a lot of extra effort, and the early games show that the developers didn't have enough experience to accomplish that. Super R-Type shows when the SNES is coded "straightforward".
Another problem is that the 65816 is a pretty uncommon processor, compared to the 68000 which was used in lots of Arcade games and home computers. In the end, if you put a lot of blood and sweat into it, you can make exciting action games on the SNES (R-Type 3, Super Turrican II).
man iremember back when i was kid my brother had a SNES and i was a kid back in the n64 days so SNES was my old skool console. man r-type was my favourite game i memorized where each enemy would come out i had it down it was sick!
100% pure epic awesome. this game is a legend among shooters. i was pretty good at this back in the day
by the way i was in a club tonight in helsinki, finland. i almost shit myself, when they started showing r-type game footage on screen during a dj-set. fuck yeah! :D
wow for it being on easy you sure arent that good....try playing on the hardest level of difficulty....only to play on expert if you manage to beat it.....then the game is totally impossible to beat...kinda....yea try that...

Everyone talks about how superior the arcade versions were ('avoid Super R-Type!'); but when I finally played them sometime later, the dramatic difference in the audio made the experience rather underwhelming. :P
HAHA! you couldn't even kill that thing what destroyed you! have you ever finished the last big boss? I mean... You are playing it at novice! it can't be that hard! Believe me.
Great game. I have it on the wii from the Virtual Console. I am still at level 4 on normal. Remember level 4? the giant airship? It took me a while to beat level 2 and 3.
This game is not for the meek or impatient! To this day, I still can't easily get to level 4 on normal without getting my ass handed to me a few times. I especially love how there's no respawns, saves or checkpoints...AT ALL!! Now I need to just find a copy of R-Type Delta.
What R-Type should I play? I have different emulators, and I have the GBC release of R-Type I/II. I was wondering, the TG-16 version of I/II has great graphics; were they the original arcade versions or a remake?

has anyone ever played Blood Money for the old ass Omega computers? is this the same game or is a very good rip off? I am thinking of getting it for the virtual console
R-Type is a well-known series that's been around since the mid-80s. It catapulted the shmup genre. I have never heard of Blood Money, but I seriously doubt R-Type ripped anything off. And do you mean Amiga, not Omega?
Darn right! I never got past the third level if my memory serves me right, but the soundtrack was one of the things that kept me coming back for more. Time to dust off the SNES methinks. My studies shall have to suffer...
im sure most of yall kno this but i have a tip for beating most of the bosses. jus get up close to them and charge ur gun and when it full release it at point blank range. instant death for most bosses.
man...i was just playin this on my snes emu....no offense but i beat it on hard...pro is a bitch to play....this game is addicting for me...i'm 28 now and i've been playing on and off for many years...never gets old for me...thanx for the upload!! keep gaming!!
yeah me too but nothing beats the classics,.....philosima was the last good one.....1st generation playstation game....and the one from square...Einhander was good
Actually, I personally think R-Type 3 was better. But then, I had this classic for actual SNES and because of it, I'm such a shooter fan today, so this game aint that bad ^^' I cant belive I beated this up when I was young, this game doesnt have checkpoints or anything...
yeah but being able to sit thru the game and beat it in one sitting is what made it fun....hmmmm you'll kill me but i never played r3..guess i better pick it up
Just picked this up for $2.99- pretty surprised at how cheap it was for being one of the great SNES titles.

You can one-shot the first boss by getting a hang of the beam charge at the ideal time that the fight initiates.
Charge the beam, and the second the boss makes his first pause at the lower-right of the screen, get as close as possible and blow him to shreds.

R-Type is a well-known series that's been around since the mid-80s. It catapulted the shmup genre. I have never heard of Blood Money, but I seriously doubt R-Type ripped anything off. And do you mean Amiga, not Omega?

AWESOME MUSIC I still have this cardrige and the prev versions Is better than some modern games of the genre

R-Type is the greatest shooters of all time. R-Type series is my personal favorite, too. (^_^) I'm pretty good at Shmups to be honest.

Actually, I personally think R-Type 3 was better. But then, I had this classic for actual SNES and because of it, I'm such a shooter fan today, so this game aint that bad ^^' I cant belive I beated this up when I was young, this game doesnt have checkpoints or anything...
