@PenisMcWhirtar It was an accident. Sorry ; ) Maybe it was the weird packaging, combined with the frailness of the plastic + my enthusiasm that did it in...?...maybe it's just what my hobby is making me do? I have another one now.
One of those tracks which I have to walk away from for a year at a time. And then it is powerful enough for a moment to bring me back to when I once had a soul.
I haven't heard anything by Speedy J other than Ginger. Definitely going to buy this album in a day or so... Thanks for posting. Any other of his releases I should look for? I'm more into the abstract stuff like this.
It's an astonishing piece. I can't believe how much this album gets overlooked. I suppose it's because people like his dance-able tunes best. I'm the opposite though, I mean. I discovered him and a lot of similar artists through Autechre... Ended up grabbing a bunch of the Artificial Intelligence CDs a long time ago :)
I really hope he does more like this. You'd think that with the amount of stuff he made for the newer versions of Reaktor that he'd really take advantage of it more in his tunes.
But yes, it's a fantastic album. I've got it on rotation with all of my other tunes now, it's absolutely great. It's really one of those CDs that has a "conceptual effect" after extended listening. That is, once you listen to the whole CD you really grasp where the artist was going and it really adds to its, well, "artistic" effect. In a very similar fashion to Autechre's "Chiastic Slide".

This album I had to re-buy, because I snapped the CD. It was that good.

@alleygh0st If you snap CDs you think are good, I'd hate to see what you do to ones you think are bad...
I keep this cd in a tabernacle with a red lamp burning by it day and night and periodically burn incense in front of it.

this is easily the best work Jochem Paap has ever produced. 'A Shocking Hobby' ranks up there in the top 50 of all-time best electronic albums.
