Where did you get this song? I looked it up on itunes but it was not the same version as this. That is to say it was the same singer but without the mean instrumental accompanyment.
the Paul Brady version is quite amazing, Brady in his prime had a voice of such pure quality the songs he sang back then were outstanding, this was before he got into the MOR vibe of the 80s
@imspotlessunderneath don't know when Arthur MacBride was written but there is a song that was a hit for the Boswell sisters called "Rock N Roll" in 1939
@imspotlessunderneath -actually its "drop and to roll"-its a military term we use, we also say rock and to roll as well-its us poor devils who get caught up in military
irish people have lost there way we have a free state less then 100 years and we have fucked it up im only 24 and i can see hoow shit the country is imagine how were viewed all over the world! im a fluent irish speaker and all i can say is equal rights for whites this a police state and its undemocratic were else in the world would you have a minister for health thats overweight time for us to stop taking shit!!
They used to pay so-called "bounties" to potential recruits, and then take them to an inn and either get them hopelessly drunk or drug their ale. Then they would claim that the recruit had drunk his bounty and give him nothing. Sound familiar?
please tell me how a very good song like this turned into something so political. This BS about Bush and Maggie T should be filed under who gives a shit, just enjoy this very fine song.
@tecleary -- "so political"?? This song is about as political (and violent) as it gets! These two guys kill a British recruiting sergeant and his squad... Don't let the pretty melody fool you!
If you LISTEN to the words, they DO NOT kill anyone,They did to the sargent what the sergeant said he would do to them.If you were ever in the military you would know that every recruiting sergeant tell lies just to meet the quota that is set upon them. You must be a Britt to take this so personally
meltogue it intersting to see that over the last 12 years Ireland turned into the UK of the 1980 under the terror of Maggie T, now Mary Harney is destroying the health system, Banks get the billions while schools - hospitals are being closed - FF claim to be a Republican Party - for sure the GW BUSH version, cuntz the lot of them
hi thanks for your message, unsure where you are living, but my brother and a couple of friends play in a few pubs in dublin the Hole in the Wall, Grave Diggers, Grangers, they play during the week days and the music is great trad, check them out if you can,
if you type 'balcony tv' into Utube u will get a lot of good music recorded in a flat overlooking dame st, even Paul Brady, Waterboys, my friend, n lots of irish bands gig on it, its worth a look, thanks, enjoy
@anthonynewsome cheers man ,I have been to the hole in the wall years ago, must check em out again soon. Life would be right depressing at the moment only for the trad , the gaa and a few jars!
The price of beer is killing the trad session. Had a cracking session last year. We were in a pub for a bitthday so the price of pints didn't keep us away - though it did keep us sober.
We had a whole heap of dancers, musicians and singers going for hours on end - great craic and a good set of The Walls of Limerick, a march (where one dancer was a 95 year old farmer) - it was how it's meant to be. Sang myself hoarse and danced myself sore.
It's the same in Sweden. The traitors in the government and the media are running their hate campaign against our cultural heritage and are aiming to take it away from us. Making us loyal only to their filthy consumerism.
Our current "prime minister" actually stated that Swedish culture is nothing but barbarism.
Yes between them and the bankers your country is in a bad mess. But from what I know of the irish your a fighting race and your spirit will not be suppressed.
800 they have been trying to suppres us rape, famine, pillage, war. And i think we are doing just fine, we had a good economical run and what goes up must always come down, the higher we are the further the fall. It is the way it is chef, at least we know we always have the french like in 1798 at bantry bay.
After listening to Christy's new album and the Planxty reunion I think the tradition is still alive and doing quite well, the remaining fans need to keep singing and postings the songs far and near (I'm out in Texas)

The best thing that ever happened to the UK was Mrs Margaret Thatcher...only a fool would think otherwise.
More power to her elbow...
