Apong Esiong had 12 kids 8 boys and 4 girls. he taught all boys arnis de mano/sinuwali/dumog/espada i daga and 3 out of 8 boys died during arnis death matches.
I didn't prod much more seeing how the past made him reminisce sad memories. i'm coming back to macabebe 2013 and will look for more pampangeno arnis masters.
the 77 year old master is Apong Culas from macabebe pampanga where the original Kapangpangan sinuwali originated. unfortunately, most pampangeno masters didn't past down their knowledge to the next generatiions.
i visited macabebe last year and met one 90 year old master Apong Esiong, but he is too old to show his full expertise of the art. when i asked him why he chose not to teach, he said "mas manyaman lalawen dadagul la reng anak mu" trans: "it's good to watch your kids growing up"
Thanks for posting this video it brings back memories of watching my uncles train , they were guerillas in WW II...Every time I go home I usually buy my Arnis/escrima sticks in pampanga....always end up getting quality sticks from there. Maraming Salamat kabayan!
@hMMmmpify that's right... people of Patling are not miserable.... if so happen that you will visit Patling which is in Capas, Tarlac you will find out how people are blissful... up to now.
very nice video. I think this is the oldest documentary of this very ancient martial from the Philippines. Merci Bien pour ce bon ancien video francais. Je sui de Philippines
i never thought this thing have existed..now my frustration in learning arnis got even stonger.thank you uploader!galing =D
how i wish arnis was given so much attention by the government so as to us pinoys learn everything about it...mas mararamihan pa ata tayo ng mga dayuhan na may alam sa art na yan =(
@philliene i think our educational system should be revised including P.E. P.E. should focus only on phil. martial arts & dances, plus they compliment each other.
huego todo, deflection mode. hope other other older videos will also come out.. definitely not stick based but sword and dagger discipline.. hope these practitioners are still around. mabuhay kayo!!!
@mrMP40sw sad to say manong, this documentary was taken sometime in the late 50's. for sure at their age... rest in peace na sila... maliban sa ibang audience na bata....
@largomano54 Thank you for your reply. I was just fortunate enough to meet Master Michael Giron at the Jersey FMA Gathering. I respect and admire his lineage, knowledge and dedication. I like the unity of your group. When I hit Cali I would like to spend some time with you fella's.
Ticsay: (inaudible owing to the narrator) pagkali-kali in other countries, or towns here in the... Philippines.
Old man: I play Arnis de Mano. [My] age: 50 years old.
Old man with "Arnis Referree" shirt: I am 77 years old. I already have sixty years... of playing Arnis de Mano (or I have been playing Arnis de Mano for 60 years.)
Note that the only person who used the term "pagkali-kali" was Ticsay. Not the two old farmers. There is no kali in Kapampangan.
@jedoza I don't think it's called Pagkalikali in other countries. In Placido Yambao's book,"Mga Karunungan sa Larong Arnis" published in 1957, it states that Kali is also know as Pagkalikali in the Luzon region of the Philippines. So I don't believe there's no Kali in that region of the Philippines.
@MrLazo29 there's no pagkali-kali nor kali in kapampangan. there's only ali which means hindi or no. in other countries, well, we all know who propagated the myth.
@jedoza I think I'll take the word of 2 Philippine Champions over yours. The word Kali means to dig or stab in the Ilocano dialect. I think you should seek out other sources on Philippine history, not just Mark Wiley books.
@MrLazo29 the word kali also means to dig in negros and panay. besides, the language spoken here is kapampangan and not ilocano, so what's your point?
maybe you haven't noticed yet, i merely provided a translation of what was spoken by ticsay and the other two guys; the statements are not mine, so what's your issue?
and don't assume that i'm limited in my readings; you don't know me.
ganda!!!! ganda!!!!!!!!!

The people in the video did real arnis. Unlike the present so-called arnis masters.

serratodo123 1 year ago
This is some excellant footage, watching the kids do arnis barefoot just shows how hard these people grow up. Hard training makes hard fighters.
Also watch in practice how the strokes are being passed not much force to force.
