I just got cast in this role! I'm really psyched! I think Rita's subtlety is cool and effective but I'm hoping to be allowed to play it bigger and more theatrically. XD
Rita is good, but the artist this song was written for and who originated the role (Lenora Nemetz, drama desk nom.) is really untouchable. I wish there was a video of her doing this number.
This was the BEST version of this scene, ever! Rita, you are a treasure and a delight, always. Absolutely perfect. Thank you for this post. That was ART!
THANK YOU for posting this....I saw this on television when I was a CHILD and it made a HUGE impression on me..........I LOVE IT that I can just go to YouTube and FIND IT!!...but ONLY because kind people like you decide to SHARE the video. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
What a talent Rita is! She does everything perfectly! If only more people in the world see life like Rita's character in this video does, life would be more happy and joyful.
Agreed on Rita Moreno. Superb. I am confused by your opinion about the character. Are you suggesting that "putting on an act" in the face of poor working conditions will make life more joyful? For whom? Look again for Rita's dripping irony you might have missed. Studs, like Barbara Ehrenreich, marvels at how workers sanely cope with mistreatment. He certainly does not suggest that they should "know their place" in the social/economic order. The song is a call for reform, not for the status quo.
I think there is also the message that there is dignity in labor, and there can be an element of pride in doing a job well even if it something others might label "menial".
Absolutely wonderful! Thanks so much for posting this. Rita Moreno has always been a magnificent talent....and this shows us that fact again. She's mesmerizing!
LOVE THIS!! From Studs Turkel's musical version of his book, "Working" and Moreno does a great job with this song. Acts and sings it beautifully-should become the Waitress' National Anthem
oh I like this version of Dolores. My school's doing Working this spring and I'm thinking of auditioning for this part. Thanks for the inspiration!
