The reason there is not as much variety in games these days is that games have become more expensive to make than ever before. Games now must succeed and in order to be successful, you have to make sure you become successful by replicating the success of popular games. Call of Duty is popular which is why we have so many shooters. I actually think this generation is great. SO many indie games and great retail games. We all have opinions. Great video man!
@CaptainZombeh What world did you live in? Games were never 30 dollars. NES games were 35. SNES was 60 (that is more money with inflation). N64 ranged from 50 to even almost 100. PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox were 50 bucks which is almost 60 dollars with inflation. Games are 60 dollars today and I think we are lucky. But I agree, games are too expensive.
In the early 80's nearly every game was a space shooter. In 1984 (as you all know) the gaming market crashed because of oversaturation. I believe a similar thing will happen.

Actually, the current generation is more like the 1980s and 1990s. All games the same, limited genres (hey, how about ANOTHER side-scrolling platformer) and knock-offs, accessories no one buys (who had anything for nintendo that didn't come in the box? the arcade stick was cool but I never saw one in real life) and peripherals that are uselessl (how many games did you use the Superscope for), add-ons with questionable games and short lifespan (e.g. everything Sega released not called Genesis).
The RROD was a motherboard failure that was indicated with said ring. I got a preowned 360 for christmas and then few days later dead by RROD. but my mom had paid 150 pounds and the stores warranty was in date so a 188 quid new 360 only cost 33 poundsand my mum got it within 2 hours of my old one breaking. but I had to play all my games again to get back my gamerscore and stuff.
Let's not forget the near endless amounts of waiting we seem to do to actually play a game now. If it's not loading screens, it's screens constantly checking for and/or promoting DLC packs and Online Pass requests. And Business logos really should be skippable after the first time you play the game. But they're not.
The worst for this is EA. The most money grabbing publisher out there, we can thank them for the birth of the Online Pass system.

You forgot to mention the RE series turning into Gears of War. Also, Dragon Age 2 turning into FFXIII. They might as well change the name of the game to something else.
I completely agree more genres should be worked on besides for fps,but if your refering to battlefield being a copy of cod,its not quite a copy its made by the same people who made medal of honor than they moved on to battlefield which has 12 games in the series
The thing that makes me laugh about HD remakes is you pay and you actually get a sub HD very mild improvement. I emulate PS2 and Gamecube/Wii on my PC at 1080p and the game looks incredible. If a couple of talented programmers can do this in their spare time there is NO excuse a massive company can't match them or even do it better.
fps games don't suck fallout 3 and new vegas are fps also tes seriesare in first person. some books are in first person like "i was home but sudenly group of people stole my car."
If you wanna see how bad Games have become in terms of trying to push for the Online Play. Take a look at SC V. The Single portion of the game is so stripped down. It's by no means worth the Money. Hell, characters don;t even have their own ending anymore. Which was one of the most fun parts of a fighting game for me. Playing as each Character to see each different ending. I agree, this Console Generation is just about money. And is the worst.

I hate buying a game full price. And discovering it takes 2 hours of my life to enter codes and more codes and downloads to get the game running. Also if I'm playing the ps3 I also have to install the game before I can even play it. Also hating downloading a demo from psn and having to wait for the install as well afterwards.
Personally I cant even turn on my console anymore. After buying a nice computer and getting used updated graphics totally has ruined console for me.. Plus the remote control is just crap compared to K+M imo anyways. And to add to all of that, hardly any worthwhile games have been released =_=.. I miss the good old days.

I've seen that some games are trying to go back to their roots in order to get more money as well. It's like their last resort since they can't come up with anything else. Capcom did that with Mega Man 9 and 10, and I do love the game (minus the damn DLC to get another Difficulty >.>), but really, I think it's ongoing. Castlevania Rebirth, Mortal Kombat 9, or even RE: Revelations. Why else after years they would release Marvel vs. Capcom 3, also? [Ran out of Characters Remaining]
Yeah I'll never forget that this was the damn generation that killed "FINAL FANTASY" I mean it was no excuse to ever release FFXIII that was the sorriest rpg ever in my opinion and FFXIII2 really is not a whole lot better, still got the same horrible fighting engine..yeah eventually the markets gonna bottom out like it did back in the early 80s.

Region locks really fucked me off during the PS2 era. Especially SF Anniversary Collection, it never had a PS2 PAL release plus there were other games I really wanted but couldn't get.
At least Sony have done a smart thing with the PS3, PSP and Vita and that is all of those systems region free!
I own NHL 12, Fight Night: Champion, Soul Calibur IV, RE 5, Battlefield 3, Fifa 12... I have multiplayer games coming out the ass and NO ONE will play them. They are obsessed with online war-based shooters. Videogames used to be semi-social. At least my old roommate would stay up late with me while we conquered all the Silent Hills. THAT was a rare occurrence.
The 2 BIG problems with current console game are: The multiplayer aspect and the difficulty of a game. The media mass-markets online play (which is fine) but totally disrespects playing multiplayer locally (e.g. with your friends in the living room). I am in college right now and anytime my friends want to play "multiplayer" it involves them going up to their room and playing Call of Duty with complete strangers.
One thing you forgot to mention is the gamers themselves. Now a days, people are just critics at everything especially graphics. Let me use Skyward Sword as an example, people judged the game immediately by the graphics, automatically saying it sucks or its for kids. Some people only like a certain genre that they diss out everything else. Gamers also allow everything you mentioned to happen. DLC, people still pay for it. Upgrade versions of games , Capcom, people buy them anyways.

Actually, the current generation is more like the 1980s and 1990s. All games the same, limited genres (hey, how about ANOTHER side-scrolling platformer) and knock-offs, accessories no one buys (who had anything for nintendo that didn't come in the box? the arcade stick was cool but I never saw one in real life) and peripherals that are uselessl (how many games did you use the Superscope for), add-ons with questionable games and short lifespan (e.g. everything Sega released not called Genesis).

The RROD was a motherboard failure that was indicated with said ring. I got a preowned 360 for christmas and then few days later dead by RROD. but my mom had paid 150 pounds and the stores warranty was in date so a 188 quid new 360 only cost 33 poundsand my mum got it within 2 hours of my old one breaking. but I had to play all my games again to get back my gamerscore and stuff.

Let's not forget the near endless amounts of waiting we seem to do to actually play a game now. If it's not loading screens, it's screens constantly checking for and/or promoting DLC packs and Online Pass requests. And Business logos really should be skippable after the first time you play the game. But they're not.
The worst for this is EA. The most money grabbing publisher out there, we can thank them for the birth of the Online Pass system.

The thing that makes me laugh about HD remakes is you pay and you actually get a sub HD very mild improvement. I emulate PS2 and Gamecube/Wii on my PC at 1080p and the game looks incredible. If a couple of talented programmers can do this in their spare time there is NO excuse a massive company can't match them or even do it better.

If you wanna see how bad Games have become in terms of trying to push for the Online Play. Take a look at SC V. The Single portion of the game is so stripped down. It's by no means worth the Money. Hell, characters don;t even have their own ending anymore. Which was one of the most fun parts of a fighting game for me. Playing as each Character to see each different ending. I agree, this Console Generation is just about money. And is the worst.

I used to lose faith in gaming ; then I took a Skyrim to the PlayStation. My point is there are still games that present a bit of variety like:
Demon's/Dark Souls; Catherine.
As well as developers who learn from their mistakes and improve on what They do right
i.e. Bethesda and (despite making FPSs) Dice. Just grab a shovel to get past 20 layers of CoD and FFXIII-X and you'll see what I mean.

I've seen that some games are trying to go back to their roots in order to get more money as well. It's like their last resort since they can't come up with anything else. Capcom did that with Mega Man 9 and 10, and I do love the game (minus the damn DLC to get another Difficulty >.>), but really, I think it's ongoing. Castlevania Rebirth, Mortal Kombat 9, or even RE: Revelations. Why else after years they would release Marvel vs. Capcom 3, also? [Ran out of Characters Remaining]

Region locks really fucked me off during the PS2 era. Especially SF Anniversary Collection, it never had a PS2 PAL release plus there were other games I really wanted but couldn't get.
At least Sony have done a smart thing with the PS3, PSP and Vita and that is all of those systems region free!

I own NHL 12, Fight Night: Champion, Soul Calibur IV, RE 5, Battlefield 3, Fifa 12... I have multiplayer games coming out the ass and NO ONE will play them. They are obsessed with online war-based shooters. Videogames used to be semi-social. At least my old roommate would stay up late with me while we conquered all the Silent Hills. The 2 BIG problems with current console game are: The multiplayer aspect and the difficulty of a game. The media mass-markets online play (which is fine) but totally disrespects playing multiplayer locally (e.g. with your friends in the living room). I am in college right now and anytime my friends want to play "multiplayer" it involves them going up to their room and playing Call of Duty with complete strangers.

One thing you forgot to mention is the gamers themselves. Now a days, people are just critics at everything especially graphics. Let me use Skyward Sword as an example, people judged the game immediately by the graphics, automatically saying it sucks or its for kids. Some people only like a certain genre that they diss out everything else. Gamers also allow everything you mentioned to happen. DLC, people still pay for it. Upgrade versions of games , Capcom, people buy them anyways.

Chrome Hounds is one of from software big f ups i hope they wont do the same for armored core 5 ( please have a single player & don't rely too much on online the multilayer in ac4 was small and enough )

Its a generation of consoles that are essentially 'all mouth,and no balls'.So many of the promises whispered to us by Sony and Microsoft were never delivered.How the hell Sony has the nerve to endorse the concept of dlc (that we have to pay for) when one of the MAIN selling points of the ps3 was that games would have more content because of the Blu-Ray format is shocking.They should be dragged into the high courts for lying to the consumer.

Yep, IMO one of the best games illustrating that point is Dynasty Gundam 2,the PS2 and PS3 versions have ALL THE SAME CONTENT,the only differences are the PS3 has a couple extra suits and dlc chars,and for some mysterious reason less'costumes' even though they are still on the disc in the PS2 one,LOL wtf is that You get the PS2 one you are getting 99% of the same game. Whenever they backport this shit they put a lock on pre-existing content just to have an excuse to say BLURAYISBETTAR

@Hammerfallingdown The industry as a whole views its consumers with contempt.I have lost count of the amount of times iv bought a BRAND NEW game,and looked through the instructions manual only to be greeted with adverts for 'impending DLC content'.
This 'DLC' they are advertizing is (in a majority of cases) ALREADY ON THE FKN DISC WE HAVE PAID FULL PRICE FOR.It staggers me that the whole situation hasnt landed these fuckers into court cases.

I dont want to imagine next gen. of consoles, because it seems like everybody is gettin greedy. Sony is starting to charge $10 to play online if you bought the game pre-owned, so when do they decide to start charging us anyway. Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, Mortal Kombat, WTF!?!!?! Next generation might not i have Blue Ray/ DVD based games, we might have to download everything. At least i know Nintendo hasnt been corrupted yet since when we buy a game for the Wii/ DS we all its content in 1 disc.

everything said is valid and correct,but you can sum it up in one word....captitalism,it was inevitable the games industry went the way it went.there is still some golden nuggets to be had from some game makers,but once it overtook film as a genre,the suits in high places have shareholders to please and theres money to be made.you might not like it,i dont like it,but thats "progress" sigh

there is something we can do about it: boycott the stores the games and the companies like cockcom and anal theory. sell the newer systems so the numbers drop. buy more games from people who actually care if they make a good game. send messages and letters to the companies so they get the fuckin idea. if all others fail...RIOT!!!

I hate this gaming Generations, I fucking hate DLC because they charge a shit load for a little fucking download. If I buy a game, it should be complete. I don't want to buy a new titled game and realize that a few months later it would be, not only cheaper, but have a new version of the game with more content - Capcom. And for an icon pack is fucking meaningless, why buy a icon, who the hell came up with that. Remember when you could unlock secret content, well not anymore, you gotta buy it. >:
