Being a piper with B.Cal was a real experience and joy - being paid to fly out and perform in exotic countries at the behest of embassies, and TV companies etc. was the stuff dreams were made of !
This happened when the "powers to be" made a bad business choice and swopped the Saudi routes with British Airways and South American routes with BCAL. The company then could not regain itseld and merged with British Airways.
@fletchyyz1961 - i think you'll find there is more behind it than that but most will never know. My father worked wit bua and bcal and went on to be he executive board based at gatwick up until the take over in 88
BCAL and BA were as bad as eachother. We can always remember and renimiss over BCAL but the true airline of this era was Laker Airways. Thanks to the government, BA, BCAL , AA, Pan Am and TWA it was out of business in 1982. I am glad that BCAL hit the dust by getting brought out by BA in 88
Correct me if I am wrong (as I am sure you will) but the slogan "We never forget you have a choice...." wasn't this purloined by Bastartd Airlines, otherwise known as BA? Sorry, Brit Cal were lovely but after you get delayed 7hrs in Chicago by "your own" airline with no explanation it tends to colour your outlook. Mea Culpa.
BCal was the biggest independent scheduled airline in the UK and was BA's biggest competition in those days. BCal fell into some financial troubles in '87 and BA offered to help out. The airline was absorbed into BA taki ng on BCal scheduled routes. The charter division of BA (British Airtours) was rebranded to Caledonian which existed for 12 or 13 years.
How right you are blobsplatt those kilts were what kept us Pilots 'On the Job'. My wife still has hers and YES!! it still fits. Lucky for me it still comes out on high days and holidays,
This wouldn't "fly" in the US! Flight attendant union and PC crowd would be horrified. In reality, American flight attendants are mostly old and ugly. It's union and government rules, you know! You can't discriminate against old and ugly people.
my freind who recxently just retired from being a flight attendant with delta airlines was very upbeat and helpful i am sure many people have benefitted from her attitude so watch watch you type!
nice ad beats loads of ads today, but then again if this was shown today it would probably be banned because of sexism.just shows that we dont take ourselves as seriously
How much you wanna bet if this were aired today there's be lawsuits from some crackpot PC feminists saying its degrading and sexist. Really shows how we didn't take ourselves so seriously back in the good old days.
This took my back to my childhood where flying was still a bit glamourous, and the flight attendants were in my opinion a little happier, prettier, and really one the of best parts of the flying experience.
As an former cabin crew member of Caledonian Airways I can assure you Caledonian (CKT) merged with Flying Colours (FCL), to become JMC in 1999 and then rebranded at Thomas Cook Airlines (TCX) who are still operating.
Thie advertisement was for British Caledonian Airways which was taken over by British Airways in 1988. The name "Caledonian" was retained and used for BA's charter division and it was this airline which eventually formed Thomas Cook Airlines. This advert has nothing to do with any charter airlines.
Unfortunately not. They were folded into British Airways as a whole in the early 90s I think. Or into some other airline. Either way, Caledonian no longer exist. Tis a shame.

I can't see how it's that sexist, if people think that, that's what's wrong with society now.
