  • thats exactly how i would do it....exactly

  • True, but I have always felt that the leaving of Pick Withers made the greatest change! Making Movies and Love Over Gold continiued in the DS sound, whereas Brothers In Arms and On Every Street were totally different. Not bad, but different in sound, rhytm and style. I do prefer the first records :)

  • sounds like expresso love

  • making movies - for me the most kick ass ds album before bia album :)

  • my fav band forever ;)

  • Sei grande.

  • This, in the 20 years that I've been listening to Dire Straits, is the only recording I've ever heard of the title song "Making Movies". Is anyone aware of any other recordings?

  • You can hear the morphing of Tunnel Of Love in this. This song never quite made it....Neither did David Knoffler. It was a good move to dump david. Dire Straits woud not have been the same band.

  • bloody hell i would not want you to miss your dewlicious pizza

  • Wow, this is truly priceless.

  • now if someone would only upload the three vids in HQ

  • Brilliant, breathkating from the very beginning.........and as always....... Long live Mark!!!!xxxxxx

  • riding under the clyde mark eh excuse me

  • its a shame this song never made it in this form - the groove is undeniable! sounds a bit like Good Vibrations at the end too!

  • this is tremendous... stuff ive never seen before.... and is that david?

  • yes

  • tart

  • IS EXPRESSO ¡¡¿¿¿

  • fantastic mark knopfler the best

  • Thank you very much!

  • In my opinion this first line-up with David And Pick was the only and real Dire Straits. Later Dire Straits with session musicians maybe even played better but it was not group but it became Mark Knopfler Band.

  • Hal Lindes was their next Guitarist

  • Love him, love his voice his style...thank's .will watch several times

  • The genius of this man!

  • Thank you very much for posting!

  • Best vid on youtube. Thanks

  • Mark Knopfler is really crazy and he has best riffs...biggest guitarist ever

  • Mark knopfler the best!!!!!!!!!!!

uff.. i love the dire straits music and mark´s solo´s cd´s too!!!!

  • Had David Knopfler not left/been kicked out, _Making Movies_ would've been a rather different album. It seems Mark re-cast the material after David was out in order to offer it to prime session players like Sid McGinnis and Roy Bittan.

DK's departure really changed the nature of DS, don't you think?

  • Yeah, Brothers in Arms might have not existed.

  • Hmmm, why did I get a thumbs down? I guess someone doesn't like me quoting reality.

  • is ti just me or did i notice parts of a lot of other dire straits songs in this video?

  • What a precious videos you have posted here, uploader!

You really made my day today! As I was watching it I couldn't stop thinking what a brilliant songwriter/guitar player Mark Knopfler is! Just loved it!

  • I agree. This was a great video. I enjoyed it very much. When I see videos like this, I think, I'm so glad for YouTube. Thanks for posting this video!!

  • Holy proto-'Expresso'!

But this is hoiw it happens.

  • The riff is he is playing later became Expresso Love.

  • Yeah and the Making Movies phrase went into Skateaway.

  • And he also sang "by the pool" at 2:08!

  • Down to the waterline at 6.26

  • This is very interesting, as Making Movies was the album they were working on when David quit, so it's quite interesting to see them rehearsing for this particular album, with David still on board. The guitar riff in this song sounds more like Espresso Love.

I wonder if this isn't another one of those things where the title track ended up being left off the album it was named after, like with Zeppelin's Houses Of The Holy, or Queen's Sheer Heart Attack.

  • Thanks for sharing! It was great watching and going back to circa 1979, back to the raw roots of the band and the namesake of my favorite album: Making Movies.

  • Yeah, when David Knopfler was seconds away from leaving/being fired!

  • espresso love intro-making movies is different

  • Mark was kinda mean to David hhmmm and frustrated david and caused him to quit...Very sad you know!

  • It's a groovy song! I like it...

  • Does anyone know where I can find this track? It's a real good one...

  • what is the name of this song?

  • making movies

  • this is obviously a very early version of "making movies" which eventually appeared on the album of the same name - but it sounded very different.

  • skateaway

  • omglol. making movies ofc

  • *correction, the song I mentioned which these lyrics are an early version of is actually called "skateaway" and it is on the album making movies (donaldmuck already mentioned this).

  • The song "making movies" as discussed in this video actually becomes two different songs. The words seem to be an early version of "making movies" as it would appear on the album of that title. The riff, however, is the beginning of "expresso love" which is also on that album. Mark's brother, David Knopfler, actually leaves the band during the recording of this album (their third).

  • The middle part of the song sounds a little bit like solid rock.

  • thank you very much!

  • check this version... i hope you like it

    watch?v=OZ-4mtgID2o

  • thanks for posting this! it really gives great insight into the early makings of direstraits.

  • Dire Straits never let this song out on CD. Does anyone know why they didn't? Its a good song.

  • great...well making movies is in fact a mix of expresso love and skataway...thx

  • I very very love this song !!! mArk cool!!!

  • What a wonderful riff...

  • mark knopfler=king
