I dislike spanking as a form of punishment. Kids need consistency and that includes punishment. I find that I am much more likely to spank when I'm angry which a recipe for inconstancy of punishment. However, I do not rule it out. If I thought it would save my kid's life then I would do it. The topic is something of a point of contention in my family. My wife comes from a family that is big on spanking and I am not.
I think a good parent would do all kinds of things to save a child's life. You'd allow a doctor to cut your child with a knife to save its life (and that happens all of the time). You'd perform the heimlich, risking breaking your child's ribs, if it were choking. Lots of things. But it's hard to imagine an occasion when a child would die if it weren't punished violently. So it may be a bit different.
And yep, we learn parenting from our parents. So the family situation isn't surprising at all.
For example, children often need reinforcement... often things which are off limits may require you to repeat "no" over and over again. As you probably know kids can put themselves in danger and often the same danger. Sometimes as a parent you are scared the next time the child puts himself in danger you might let your attention falter and the child would be hurt. I have seen a spat on the hand or leg get immediate and lasting results. If I feel it necessary I will spank. I'd rather not though
I'm glad you're at least disinclined to use corporal punishment. I've heard that reasoning -- kids put themselves into danger -- before. When I get my camera set back up (currently moving, and it's in a box) i'll do a video on the subject. It's definitely worth addressing.
If I'm not mistaken, more public schools have abandoned it than still practice it. It seems educators are still sharply divided it for breaking school rules. I think there around 20 or so states that still allow it.
Not sure on the number of states that allow it, but yeah, it's definitely falling out of favor. And that's a good thing. I don't think even most parents who spank their own children like the idea of somebody else hitting their kids.
And - I DON'T, LOL! Becasue, "A mans reach should EXCEED his grasp, or what's a heaven FOR?" ) but I digress - let's not even GO into the whole religion thing.. I agree with Bill Maher on that)
sorry I'm being abit feisty and cantankerous, as is my ownt.. I can't stand doga and people just accpeting things on face value without ever lookinmg underneath or behind, or questioning why a thing is SO or how it got to be that way, or whther we can in fact "do" anyhting about same! I haven't seen your other videos, but I like you and I will make a point of doing so. Thank you for engaging me
Nothing to be sorry for. Just expressing your thoughts, and that's kinda what youtube is all about. And I'm all in favor of critical thinking and honesty, so I know what you're talking about.
Yes - I regrettably concede that you must be factually corect. ButI don;t have to agree with it, lol! I DEFY biology! :) I know I am going to be exctinct ANYWAY.. I'm gay and HIV+, lol .. so then I am right and we ARE no different or "better" than mere animals, lol ! I suspected as much. I'm just being rambunctious. But anyway, just becasue nature says it and everyone "does" it a certain way doesn't mean that I have to agree..... *grin*
Well, oddly enough, when it comes to biology, it doesn't matter how healthy or happy you are, or how fulfilled you are with your life -- you can be predisposed to have a great and happy, but childless life, and biologically you won't pass down those genes. And you're right, we're not better than animals, because we ARE animals.
O wonder whether we don't have the capacity or the ability to transcend that and perhaps learn to HELP one another and SHARE and work TOGETHER rather than toiling on parallel but separate paths and at odds with one another. it seems to me that if we are truly intelligent rational and civilized we could overcome our baser instincts. "we" after all are always saying that man is "better" than the animals because we have a conscience and free will and the ability to make choices
I recall that I have never really gflet wholly comfortable with the notion of taking sides or the idea that one "side" 9or person) should "win" and one should subsequently have to ""lose" isn't it actually inefficient and counterproductive for companies to fught one another and compte rather than sharing proprietary information and resources and seekign a "win/win" outcome??? I KNOW what we have always done and I understand that moist people have come to simply accept it as being "normal" but
Well, unattractive as the idea may be, our ancestors that were driven to compete became our ancestors, and those who weren't driven toward competition were biologically unsuccessful. Our brains are bent toward competition. Testosterone drives toward competition. If it didn't, we'd be extinct. It is the survival of the fittest, after all.
Iwalk by the football field and I see all these young guys being indoctrinated into this cult of "manhood" which seems largely to consistof the idea of competition and "fighting". and this idea is spread throughout society like a sort of cancer , in business and society , and I sort of question whether it really has to BE, or if it's just accepted because "well that's the way it's ALWAYS been (?) I don't know!
Thank you , and my name is Hans :) I guess I am playing a bit of devil's advocate.. nothing is cast ins tone with me. I'm far from an expert, lol it just really makes me sick with despair and sadness that evil and malevolance even have to exist in our world, But I suppose (?) that it must although I wish that were not so. I loathe war. And as to the sports, well is ee many of them as little more than a sort of euphemism for war or a sort of "faux" ?"war" if you will
Well, I'M no psychologist. But I guess that I generally agree with you. More and more I feel that threats and violence and scare tactics and bullying are all interlinked and that NONE of them really produce anything like positive outcome. Rather, I think they merely engender and or extenuate the original negative and dysfunctional behavior and and prompt a feedback lop of same. I think the same is true of WAR and fighting (boxing, wrestling, competitive sports and on and on)
Thanks for your input, hkind. To an extent I agree with you, although with a few caveats. For instance, as long as there are those who will want to hurt you, it's necessary to be able to defend yourself, and that includes a capacity for warfare, undesirable as it is. And psychological studies have shown repeatedly that involvement in some competitive sports can actually be psychologically beneficial... (cont'd)
I don't think that, for instance, a game of basketball or even a judo match can be effectively compared to using violence as coercion against a child.
