Actually it is an Irish name! Its derived from the Gaelic name Caomhánach first used by Domhnall, eldest son of the 12th century King of Leinster Diarmait mac Murchada (Dermot MacMurrough). The name has many different variants such as Kavanagh or Cavanaugh, its just a different spelling.....
