  • Ian Telfer (fiddle) and Alan Prosser (guitar) serving their apprenticeship before moving on to greater things with Oysterband, possibly the finest folk/rock band ever.

  • @saunders2159

Sorry to contradict, but the Oysterband had been in existence for some time before this recording was made. I can remember seeing them at Wadebridge as early as 1977 or 8.

  • @stamsr You must be right, though I think they played under a different name and the members were somewhat different by the time they became known as the Oyster Band.

  • I recall Little & Large's version of this - The Day We Went to Noddy's.

  • Is it me or is she pretty foxy?..

  • Magic!

  • timeless classic

  • There are lots alternative words to this song....

Something along the lines of... "On the way back we had a good cr*p and chundered all over the driver" But it was always meant to be a bit of fun.

Yes - I thought it was Maddy Prior who did this.

    Great song.

  • @MrKeefta

I was of the same thoughts that it was Maddy Prior singing.

Loved Your take on the lyrics.

My own favourite was "On the way back,They used My old c***k,To open their bottles of cider"

  • She sounds exactly the same as the singer out of Steeleye Span ffs! Oddly enough I'd happily have done them both. Bloody hell!!!

  • Wasn't she pretty. Pity her Christmas offering was a bit odd.

  • @Wordsmith37 Yes she was pretty . Why do you say her Christmass offering was a bit odd ? Mind you though is she on the vidio to that ? For is she is I can't spot her

  • if my memory serves ,

Cathy Lesurf was once part of the early Fairport Convention.

Fiddlers Dram became the Whitstable Oyster Company & Céilidh band, which is now the Oyster Band

  • Day trip to Bangor has been going around my mind all day, what a joy to hear you lot singing it ! Thank you, still fun after 31 years.

  • The kids at my school had their own words, they were something like this "On the way back I stopped for a kak,and a nettle stung my arsehole I did a jig and didn't give a fig as the ground turned brown.

  • @myepiphone LOL. Reminds me of the versions of songs we came up with!

  • @sockington1

let me amend that...as she was then, not now!

  • I love a bit of folk as much as the next chap, but Jasper Carrot has a better version ;)

  • The guy on banjo looks like a young Bill Oddie from The Goodies

  • This is old English folk music.

  • WOW, Superb!

  • I lived in Bangor in 1980. You could do none of these things there. It had a charm of its own, though!

  • This brings back such funny memories of my dad singing this over and over and over....I love it

  • Original single now available (at last!) on iTunes.

  • Didn't we have a lovely time the day we went to Shagmore

They lay nude on the sand with their tits in our hands

And all for under a pound, Leg over.

On the way back we snuggled with Jack and he pushed the bottle in cider.

    Alternative teenage version.

  • What a brilliant song

  • why does ginger afro keep shaking his head left and right? - he appears troubled.

  • Brings back childhood memories of Terry Wogan and his breakfast show. Thanks for sharing.

  • Anyone heard the version "Day Trip to Victor" - was a take on the original and recorded by Bazz, Pilko and Plussy who hosted a morning radio show here in Adelaide back in the 80's. I have still have the 45 single.

  • Weren't they called "Fiddler's Dram"?

  • Obviously the Welsh Bangor. If it was the Northern Irish Bangor, they'd be singing:

Didn't we have a loverly time/The day we went to Bangor/A dangerous day/We got searched on the way/They thought we had a bomb on board/On the way back/we heard a sharp crack/and a rifle started firing/driving so fast to make our escape from the IRA!!!

  • @Rich7714 Yeah, as in ***Fiddler's Dram - Day trip to Bangor 1980***

  • @Rich7714 YOUR JOKING ...it says they ARE

  • @CLELANDBLUEBOY I think it must have said something different before and was then edited - not sure since it was a long time ago when I made that comment

  • i thought it went :

didn't we have a lovely time... the day we went to bangor,

a beautiful day, we had lunch on the way... and all for under a quid you know,

and on the way back, i tickled her crack.

and these are a few of my favourite songs... as the wheels went round.

  • I WAS 7 IT WAS MY FIRST SINGLE, I DID BUY, ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL BY PINK FLOYD BUT IT WAS SCRATCHED!! SO I EXCHANGED IT FOR THIS! HAY HO! YOU LIVE AND LEARN, REMINDS ME OV AIRFIX GLUE IN MY BEDROOM! SHOULD HAVE SNIFFED IT SPOSE!

  • Was this from a Kraut TV show?

  • There's an Aussie version of this; I've been trying to find it for YEARS!

  • @jimincairns An Aussie version . Is it by the same tital or by a different one ? Is there a Bangor in Auss' ?

  • @jimincairns

really ? ..i've only ever known this one.

Do you know who sung the one your thinking about then ?

  • After investigating it a little, using my magical music info methods, i have come up with the following :

    * Duffy's Band - Day trip to bangor (1979), from Sydney, Aust. reached #9 in Melb & also co-charting with Fiddlers Dram version. (' Duffy Band ' was a temporary band name, made up with members of a real QLD group called " Buckskin " )

    * Cathy And The Cucumbers - Day trip to Bangor, from New Zealand reaching there at # 13 and also co-charting with Fiddlers Dram.

  • If " Duffy Band " version is the one your thinking about .. " IM " me and i'll give you a copy of it.

  • @Barsopen1970 It was called 'The day we went to Bribie Island'...and I've only heard it once and nearly pee'd my pants laughing as I was driving!

  • Great!!! They don't make them like this anymore...

  • Sadly, i brought this single! I liked it then!

  • @tjfaust What is your life?

  • @tjfaust I still love it .

  • This song. .is a classic

  • @yastunt You're dead right it is .

  • @2100Rose It's great to hear a classic without an American accent(!)

  • cathy lesurf on vocals

  • i think i love her

  • funky bassooon
