I'd just like to point this out. On "Two Can Win", Jay sped it up just right to make the singer sounds like Michael Jackson from his Jackson 5 years. Maybe it's coincidence but I thought it was clever.
lol...sorry my dude. thats wrong. whenever u hear a sample sped up its match the tempo of the beat mostly. in this case especially. this version is too slow for the drums Dilla layed on his verson.
he didnt speed it up to match micheal, he sped it up to make the beat, producers have been slowing and speeding shit up for years, where did u get that silly concept. its just the tempo he wanted to fuck with, hasd nothin to do with mike, all the heads like dilla and black milk praise the sylvers for being such dope artists, they wouldnt try to take away from them
@imcurtis206 Yea i kno! thought it was michael at first! beaing a big J5 fan, thouht, how come i dont know this?? got me pissed... till i heard the sylvers!! ha! DILLA DAWG! THE GENIUS!!
u gotta keep in mind that all of Donuts sounded raw like that cuz he was on his death bed. It was the idea that he even was still making beats and finding nice samples. Theres those out there who are healthy and cant sync a loop or find the beauty in a track. You know healthy Dilla wuldnt make a quick raw loop like that. He would perfect it. Its the thought that mattered. Inspirational actually.
Doggie, shit aint looped. If you listened to the whole track, you'd notice Dill took like, 5 different chops from this track and arranged them beautifully. Just thought I'd bring that to your attention. Glad though that you got love and respect for the greates producer ever. Donuts is a fuckin CRAZY ass record, everything about it. The circumstances under which it became, the samples, everything. Keep bumpin that raw shit and RIP JAY DEE!
good lookin out. idk if u produce...but certan parts of any beat have to be looped. cuz u cant just bang out for 3 mins and have a perfectbeat...especially wth his help. slices and loops make a beat. i appreciate the feedback. i respect u as a listener dude. Dilla is the ish and i never published it but flipped this sample as well and yeah lops are definitely involved incertain areas. big ups to man.
one love
i ant hatin so if u reply i take it as constructive conversation. outta respect
Fa sho fa sho mane. I "try" to produce a lil bit. Shit is NOT easy! I got me a MPC3000, like Dill, and that fucker is so old and hard to use. They came out in 94. I'm to impatient to really make myself sit down and learn it, so, one day I think I'll finally make myself. Plus the manual is 250 some odd pages and some parts are so confusing they sound like their in a different language. I give Dill even more respect cause he didn't use a computer. You don't do you? What do you use?
man the 3000 is nice. any piece is nice as long as u know how to use em. i used to rock the 2000xl but my girl was pissed and broke it! lol since then i been rockin my 1000. On the real u gotta use a comp. not for the beat makig if u lie hardware but for the editing like pro tools. the bizness right there, plus if u want more sounds u can use comp. software like reason as a sound module but assign to ur mpc pads and bang out. Dilla is the reason i wanna produce man. bang out on that 3000!!!
When I heard Dilla sample this on the Donuts album I couldn't get enough of it. I've found out he sampled it from the Sylvers. After I heard the original Only One Can Win, I became a Sylvers fan. I'm very surprised that old shool radio stations doesn't spin this track.
Very interesting that you said that you thought it was the Jackson 5. There is another song by Foster Sylvers that a long time ago I thought was the Jackson 5. If you don't know, the song that I'm talking about is called "Misdemeanor" which was sampled for D.O.C.'s 1989 hit "It's Funky Enough".
the chorus has such a carefree floaty feel to it...picture driftin around on a sunny day. dilla really brought that feel to tha max when he banged it out
@ElBoogieAmworld favorite??? come on...how about All I Do Is Think Of You? Jackson 5. Donut of the heart) or Light my fire?? anyway...guess its hard to argue just one! with DILLA! HAHA
i'm not sure 'bout which one he used to make those deelicious donuts, i heard he had a boss sp-303, the same as madlib uses...but even if he did the donuts with his mpc, they would almost sound the same, i think.
that would SOO make ISIS happy...esp Fool's Paradise...Chaos, Cry of A Dreamer, Through The Love In My Heart...I Don't Need To Prove Myself, I Remember...yeah I'd love those to be remade....although these originals are just IT for me.
Real. I can imagine Dilla's face lighting up when he heard this. It's so excitin when you hear a record where, as a producer, you could use every part of it. I wouldn't be surprised if Jay Dee made 7 versions with this record.
DILLA sliced and diced the hell out of this jam. LIKE MINDS THINK ALIKE!! i bought the album this joint is on 12 YEARS AGO and was planning on freakin' it but JAMES YANCEY beat me to it! lol,lol.. R.I.P. DILLA!
everyone check out THE LOOK OF LOVE.. a JDilla mixtape put together by q-tip. they use the jdilla sample of this song, with common on top.. it is absolutely beautiful. only about 1-2 mintues long but amazin.. i know its on other things too, i think.. but the mixtape as a whole everyone shoudl check out
Thank you for posting this wonderful song - I actually heard it first when sampled on J Dilla sample of this song title "Two Can Win" taken from his "Donuts album" ...
Do you know where I can find the lyrics to this tune.
So that's where my favourite Dilla beat comes from!
