Another note, some of these new LTs may deploy with a unit based on their previous experience before the commission. Some though are able to be on full-time status with the Guard either because they had a full-time job previously as enlisted or they get selected for a full-time job after the commission. The full-time duty in the Guard is primarily there to prepare resources and expedite training of the traditional (drill-status) force.
Question... If they became commissioned as a 2LT and they are part of the National Guard do they still return back to the civilian lifestyle where it is one weekend a month and two weekends a year? Or is their service now required that they become Active Duty? Just need some clarification. I am considering OCS but still have my civilian lifestyle that I'd like to keep. Let me know.
The commisssion is for a drill-status (Reserve) position where the officer returns to civilian life and builds himself/herself professionally during drill weekends, annual and special training.
Some of the candidates get a temporary 2nd LT rank for the graduation while they complete other requirements. However, a federal recognition follows for most of these new LTs and it takes some time. In the National Guard, an officer is commissioned for the respective state and also receives federal recognition in the reserves of the respective service. Hope this helps.
