He is unparalleled as it relates to intricate, multi-layered, metaphoric, substantive lyrics. On that note, I tend to cringe when arguments rely on convention.

I'm a Canibus fan, but let me be honest about the man's career. It really didn't go far at all as far as mainstream is concern. It doesn't matter if he won his battles with LL or EM or not, those two had great careers and Canibus just went away. When i said Canibus just went away, I was referring to his impact in the mainstream. I'm glad he's still doin his thing, i personally don't consider him an an all-time great rapper because his music is one dimensional with not enough versatility. For example, why is Biggie considered an all-time great? He can give u a song like Juicy, then hit u wit Who Shot Ya. Canibus is lyrically a great rapper, but who knows him outside the underground?

@Williebeamon74 What is essential in defining greatness? Is it a trait that is derived from w/in, i.e. being ill w/ lyrics or does it come from w/o, i.e. ppl saying ur ill? If a person were described as being intelligent, I wouldn't say the person is so b/c the descriptor was bestowed upon him/her. Da Vinci, Socrates, Ptolemy, etc. weren't recognized 4 what they were in their time, but recognition isn't needed as far as intellect goes. Wordsmithing/rapping is similar in this respect I think.

@Williebeamon74 I do believe Canibus is one of the greatest Hip Hop artists in recorded history thus far. That said, I'd agree Biggie is as well. That said, I liken Biggie to a general practice physican; a Jack of all trades w/ respect to the themes he raps about. Shifting gears, I see Canibus as a specialist; a Hip Hop cardiologist. He is unparalleled as it relates to intricate, multi-layered, metaphoric, substantive lyrics. On that note, I tend to cringe when arguments rely on convention.

@Williebeamon74 That's not to say that Bis doesn't have his follies. In particular, I will admit at times, when he spits his rhymes he sometimes raps off beat. Also, a good amount of his rhymes are chalked full of abstract lyrics, which leave ppl scratching their head; saying that didn't make sense. And finally, most don't like his production. But lyrics-wise, there are few who can come w/in spitting distance of him; pun intended. That is why down with Rip the Jacker.

I'm a Canibus fan, but let me be honest about the man's career. It really didn't go far at all as far as mainstream is concern. It doesn't matter if he won his battles with LL or EM or not, those two had great careers and Canibus just went away. The average fan can find LL or EM's work with ease, while most haven't even heard of Canibus and it's a shame, but it is what it is.
