You can skip some of level 1 and most of level 2 by running on top of the level. Just get the mushroom at 0:48 and break through the ceiling at the same position. Then you can break through the ceiling in level 2. The ceiling in level 1 will bring you to the end, and the ceiling in level 2 will bring you to the hammer bro at the end of the level.

My run button is A and my jump button is Z. It just feels a little more natural for my hand, if you know what I mean (see what it feels like when you rest your wrist below the keyboard's tab key?).

I also set start to enter and select to shift, but I have to turn off stickykeys for the occasional game where I use select alot.

Hope this isn't double posting - tried commenting and it didn't show for me.

I made it past the springboard without hitting Bullet Bill. Need to get as good a running start from the top invisible block as possible, jump, then bounce off the springboard without jumping on it. I hit the 1-brick-wide platform at speed, but by jumping right away I managed to land on the moving platform.

Still some luck - not to smack face-first into Bill or the lava ball.

I never would've beaten level two had I not watched this video - I had no idea you had to kill the hammer bro, which was why I was stuck.

But I don't know how you never figured out that the jump off of the springboard can be made without depending on a random bullet bill. If you avoid hitting the invisible block, you can make the jump clean.

Wow, I had no idea you could do the walk through walls glitch. And here I completed the game the hard way! But you're right, that first spring in world 1-1 is nearly impossibly to tackle. Luckily, I was playing it on my DS and since I use the NesDS, the L-trigger is rewind. Hehehe. That made this game SOOOO much easier and less frustrating. But it still took me a solid 40 minutes to beat those damn levels. Thank God, 1-3 is so simple.

Just discovered this game. 4:48-4:52 the bullet you jumped on must have a pattern of appearing at same place, same time, same vertical height every game cuz there is no way you could have guessed that info cuz the bullet hadn't shown itself when you jumped. Either that or unbelievable luck. In the original SMB I think the bullets appear at random heights not the same each game. Anyhow nicely done.

i passed level 1 and 2 by walking in the top of the levels. i got a mushroom in the first level (0:48 of this video), i hit the top and i jump... the you just walk until you reach the flag and there is a hole so that you can fall xP

Press left repeatedly while on a moving platform and this happens. There were no places in the original Super Mario Bros. with one of these platforms, so it's quite a surprising glitch to people who see this in hacks for this game.

The key is to move left on the platform, but the platform must be travelling faster then you are moving left. Walk left slower than you move right, and the game (which thinks Mario is moving left) doesn't bother calculationg collisions from his right.

I can't seem to get past the first block in the game. I've tried like a billion times, but I can't figure out how to make a long jump.
