I'm an atheist, but each time I'm watching/listening to the early verve I got this creepy feeling McCabe is some kind of God's reincarnation. This guy is just pure music, there is absolutely no one with a style (and this word kinda loses its meaning here) even remotely similar.
This is fkn amazing. Remember back then when The Verve rocked and kicked everybody's ass? Sadly those days did not last. Thanks Richard Ashcroft , you dick !!
This video sums up everything that is wrong with the verve. It hardly has any views while nonsense like Love is Noise is popular. Ashcroft needs to ditch any ideas of soloness and bring back the storm
theres no such thing as "selling out". as an artist you have to develop.. there shouldnt be any limitations imposed by some fans. theyre gods, just bow down and accept whatever they do
they did'nt sell out lol. there were too many limitations to showgaze for richard ascroft. the songs he writes and the type of artist he is is on a whole other level. Don't get me wrong, I like storm in heaven and bands like ride and mbv but this was only the beginning for the verve.
Yeah Maybe they did sell out but all you guys along with me will still buy their tickets to see them live and their new albums because lets just face it, Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco and the killers will never, ever be as good as the Verve are.
I respond to your post because I am in your band stinky hippie. And um, Storm in Heaven has made me almost drive right off the highway, twice. I mean that in the best way.
ah, i like that tune a bit. was comin home this evening with them in my ears 4 the first time in ages. the live gravity grave on "no come down" is pure fuckin class! they DID sell out. and they WERE godly! all past tense now though.
Come, bite me then! But you're mistaken, the one they did at the After Dark Club in Reading on 25th May, 1993 is the best. It's on the 'After Dark' bootleg, dig it up. Mad Richard's on fire going "Earth calling my head, hello, hello..."
Some blow? Cocaine? i wouldnt suggest that, try some weed instead. That is indeed one of their finest performances. An for the record i think Bitter Sweet is rubbish. Check out grey skies, b side of history for their last great track.
urban hymns is good not great like the others but theres filler on both tracks like stormy clouds, utter wank! catching the butterfly is FUKIN MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shut up talking about Urban Hymns it was toss, Northern soul and Storm in Heaven were class but behold the new era has begun, the verve are back and gonna be better than ever I can feel it. theververeturn com
The Verve return, the greatest news I have heard for a long time in what is currently a dull era in music, you only have to look at the latest Glasto line up to confirm that, thank god it rained (Except Iggy & the Stooges, What a performance!). Anyway to settle the score Urban Hymns or previous material, Smoke some blow, lay back and play Gravity Grave Glasto 93 Live, you'll find it on 'No Come Down' (B Sides) that should settle it!!!!
Urban Hymns maybe popular, but its dross. In exactly the same way Phil collins, Dire Straits, Wham were popular but now make us cringe. UH is pop music at its worst because it has no soul. Its Richards album. On the first two it Richard and Nick united with the wall of Bass and Drums. UH is shite and will be forgotten.
I understand what you're saying Mike, but how can you deny a song like "Bittersweet Symphony"?? A track that defined an era. I was one of the unfortunates who hadn't heard of The Verve until Urban Hymns. I will agree that their stuff before UH was better, but You can't hate an album just because its more marketable. Those were some decent songs on that album. You may call it Richard album, but None of his solo stuff comes close to UH.
Thats your opinion, great. But urban they weren't unknown at all, theyd already had two albums and seven singles. Toured with huge bands and fronted large shows. Millions were invested in them to make them marketable so people like yourself would think urban hymns is great. Well produced, maybe, but souless garbage. No wonder Nick walked out. Ashcroft is an embarrassment now, and soon to do a Phil collins and totally implode. Nick should release something...
Urban Hymms is garbage....no soul...no heart...storm in heaven, Northern Soul, and the early ep's are what verve are...Ashcroft has no soul...plenty of money(to burn) but no soul...check out grey skies...their last great track...
YEah this is a great track. Urban Hymns was a great album mate. I agree his solo career left something to be desired, but at that point he had money, fame and a happy family life so had nothing to write about. When they wrote Urban Hymns they were still pretty much unknown without a penny to their name. Each of their albums are great, and each is completely different from the last.
Too much of the same always tires dunnit. I'm glad they made Urban Hymns anyway, as without it's popularity it's unlikely I'd ever have listened to the awesome sounds of early 90s verve!
A Storm in Heaven is my favourite album of all time. A Northen Soul was alright, but I didn't like that Owen Morris made them sound like Oasis(eg)drum sound. Urban Hymms had better production and the few songs on it that were written by the band were great.
Too bloody right :) I got to see these live twice at a small venue (Newcastle Riverside) as a kid, mind blowingly good. The entire crowd were stoned lol. Also got to meet them backstage when they were supporting smashing pumpkins at Newcastle Mayfair(i went to see them not the pumpkins)and they were really cool people with genuine time for fans :) Proper music man.
this old shit is the best, stom in heaven an d northern soul.saw gig at leeds fest with bb king ..fuck life!
