Your replica looks spot-on exactly like the monsters from Critters 2. Making replicas of movie props and creatures used to be a hobby of mine. It makes me really happy to see other people doing the same thing. I'm thinking of either making a replica of one of the creatures from part 1 or making one of the baby critters from part 2. Is there any advice you could give? What type of materials/tools did you use to sculpt and make the mold? What techniques did you use?
I knew, You are not a beginner, but this movie showed me, that this is more than a hobby.... I saw a very nice work, every part was fully chiselled, I think, the robotics and the puppets are not the past yet....
Wow, that creature is awesome. I loved the critters series as a kid, lol. Don't suppose you could give me some advice? I'm currently making an animatronic creature, I have his skeleton working like a puppet and I know where servos need be mounted, but the price of $120 a piece is cringe worthy. Do you have any suggestions for a DIY alternative? Something you might of tried before with passable results?
A mould is destroyed as soon as you pour in the silicone, cook it and pull out the final "skin". I don't have any moulds for you. Even if I did. What would you do with them?
Make critters but if I knew where you live (you do not have it on your channel) we might be able to work together. (You will also see your name in the credits).
I'm not interested in making critters anymore. I made this stuff 7 years ago. But.... if this is something that interests you, then get started and have fun.
This puppet has a fiberglass underskull, but that's about it. It's mostly metal, foam and Silicone. Fiberglass was used for the mould once the clay sculpture was completed. That's about it. See the second "making a monster" video of mine for specifics on the puppets "guts".
I plan on making another video that focuses on the mechanics. To put simply, there are cables just like those that control your bicycle brakes from the head to the joystick. The cables are attached to wheels on the joystick and inside the head that act like pulleys to push and pull small paddles inside the skull. The movement of the paddles produces up and down motion or side to side motion under the silicone skin.
There are a lot of materials used to make this thing. The hair is hand punched into the silicone skin. The armature is metal surrounded by urethane. The eyes are plastic. The cables (bicycle) are attached to metal cams. You also have to make the sculpture out of 20 lbs of clay + fiberglass mould. I believe it cost around $400 - $450 in materials. You can see this puppet in action in "Critters the Return".
Yeah. For the last 8 months I have been working on "Roboticus". It's another short film about a robot-runs-amok/killing people (think Robocop 2). It's moving so slowly as I just don't have the free time anymore. I finished the stop motion puppet last year and now I'm working on animation. I hope to have Roboticus finished before the end of the year.
1st comment rating and fav awesome I love your critter I still cant find it in dinosaur dreams though. Can you do one on you terror bird please. You dont have to if you dont want to. 5 stars

lets just say i'm planning somthing BIG and i need a LOT of critters
olimarman911 2 years ago
That's great, but a mould isn't going to get you anywhere. What would you do with it? Fill it with latex? Make "critters" with it?
