  • WHO SAIS MARSHALLS DONT KICK ASS, I GOTTA TELL YA IN THE RIGHT HANDS MARSHALLS KICK ASS HARD, THANK GOD FOR JIMMY HENDRIX .... R.I.P

  • Hey... I REALLY need ot know... what amp is this exactly??? I totally feel this is a giant step in my personal quest for tone. I mean, this is it... Is this a YBA-1???

  • Wow. that thing sounds amazing ! I NEED one :)

  • omfg

  • sell me this +_+

  • HOLY SHIT!!!! thats a traynor? huge tone dude!

  • I wish you were my long lost uncle or something so you could teach me your ways...

  • The tone of life!

  • that is an Eddie VH tone man!!

    \\m//

  • any chance you'd sell that or one of it's twins? :)

  • Sounds Very sqanky!! Probably got some E-Qing done from the mike.Needs more beef on the bottom! The new Traynor Heads are absolutely KILLER!

Cool looking stacks in these vids!!

  • FUCK THE AMP I WANT THT CAT! soo cute! :D

  • KILLER tone man!!!!

  • now thats what i call a bargain :-D

  • Marshall from hell

  • damn.i want it.

  • Any chance you'd work on my Bassmaster?

    :)

  • where did you learn to mod amps?

  • that amp sounds mint

  • wow thats a big ass output transformer O_o

  • are you still alive riffguy?? or has your head exploded due to over riffage?!! mean axe work my friend!!

  • That's a really great sounding mod! The transformers on that thing are HUUUGE! I have a feeling you could make any rig sound good, but this one is intriguing. Is there any way you can send me a little more info on how you cascaded the channels and where you pick up all that extra gain? Also, any tips on how to deal with tinnitus? I've been collecting amps since I was 18 also, and my ears are starting to complain full time. 35 years of hi Db! Thanks, and keep rockin'!

  • Paul,do you find 3 pickup SGs harder to play with the extra humbucker where your hand picks? Cause I might be getting an epi G400 3 pickup and I just was wondering if they were harder to play or get used to.

  • @rockerdude29 It feels a bit different since you can't dig in as deep with the pick, so I usually just lower the middle pickup a bit.

  • @riffguy thats what i thought,if I change out the pickups I'll probably just cut out the middle and wire it neck,neck/bridge,bridge and leave the middle there as like a dummy pickup haha.then lower it really low.

  • digite gift antes de youtube

    good video

  • wow, i wasnt expecting that , thats amazing

  • I would definitely be interested in learning how to perform this mod!

  • I guess the million dollar question is: What modifications were done? I don't know of any bass amp that distorts with the master on 2.

So essentially, its the MOD that creates the distortion...the actual amp is clean tube power to amplify it, no?

  • @krelbar The output section of the amp is running clean, it's the preamp thats creating the distortion. One of the mods is the master volume circuit, the other mod is running the output of one channel into the other, to make gain.

  • @riffguy Either way, it sounds freaking GODLY!!!

  • @krelbar Thank you.

  • EVH mean street, sick :D

  • Love them Reverbs bouncing off the walls!

  • is that a 'marshall jcm 800? it sounds like one

  • $25??? FML

  • @LRMMcDonnell DAMN.

  • that is officially the best guitar tone I,ve heard online ! how did You get the sound from the amp to computer, I notice d the mic , but was it from the mic straight in to the computer? what kind of mic ? gotta be just guitar and amp, In my mind a guitar and an all tube amp still sounds the best

  • that's just awesome man!...what an amazing tone!

  • Love that EVH tone. Great cover of "Mean Streets".

  • Nice video. Never disappoint. Stellar Playing as well ...

I think Traynor puts out some of the BEST BANG FOR BUCK (and then some) amps out there. I would say for what you get they could ask twice the price.

I have my YCV80Q and my soon comming YCS50 so I can run in TRUE TUBE STEREO ..... oh yeah !!!

  • Killer tone!

  • Where are you getting the reverb?

  • @PIlotrcm can u read ?

  • @WirSindRocker

No I can't but now that I checked out the whole description I now know thanks so much ....

  • like the cat

  • riffguy, can I ask you, what pre-amp and power tubes do you use on that amp?

  • What mods did you do to make it sound like that!! Holy freakin' moly!

I just snagged a '72 YBM-1...please tell me there is hope! haha..

  • Mods??

    Awesome playing.

  • So I have a rather stupid question, but how and when did you get your like 3 or 4 full stacks? If that is what they are called?

  • @SteveShivik I bought these stacks one piece at a time, from the time I was 18 years old. I got some of this stuff pretty cheap because they needed repairs.

  • @riffguy So did you learn how to repair them yourself? And that's awesome that they've lasted so long. Where and how did you learn to repair guitars and amps?

  • @SteveShivik Yeah, I learned a lot about guitars & amps just by taking them apart...I also ruined a lot of stuff in the process. I also worked in a guitar shop as a tech for a couple of years and learned a lot from my experiences there.

  • @riffguy Wow :) I hate to ask more questions but, what do you do for work now? Something musical I hope. Also do you have any tips for a guitarist that's like about 1/4th the musician you are, when it comes to guitar playing?

  • @SteveShivik Unfortunately, my job has nothing to do with music at all, but it's steady and pays the bills.

The best advice I could give you is to play along with music as much as you can. Most importantly, don't rely on tablature....learn songs by ear!

  • @riffguy well, I suppose we all have to do what we have to do :) but phew! I guess I've been learning music mostly the right way then :)

  • @riffguy can I ask you, what pre-amp and power tubes do you use on that amp right there?

  • @gothyke Just some old tubes that I had kicking around my shop.....12AX7's and EL34's but I can't remember what brands they were. The output tubes aren't matched either.

  • Riffguy!!! Please tell me what pickups you use in your SGs???

  • @ooroozima This particular guitar has the original 57 Classics, but my other SG's are loaded with a variety of 490's, 57 Classics and Riffbuckers.

  • hey rifguy what can you recomend for me to sound like the hard sound of dime like pantera or damageplan?. I have a marshall MG SERIES 50 with digital fx.

  • @TheCosmefulanito3 Have you tried playing through a Randall? I think that's what he used.

  • @riffguy yes I know that also at for the last tour he co-created a head for KRANK, the KRANKESTEIN, but any modification that you can mention for the marshall?

  • Hey, riff guy. what could I do to my peavey valveking to get that old school fat master of puppets crunch? I want to cheaply and safely make modifications to my amp.

  • @OttoVonGoenne I'm not familiar with the Valveking's circuit, so I can't give you any suggestions.

  • @OttoVonGoenne i have a valveking for toting to small practices its a turd my jcm2000 does the real shit u need a marshall ur not a rockstar if u dont stand on stage in front of ur full marshall stack lol

  • i dig the cat man.

  • brother where in ontario are you gotta learn if you teach gotta jam if i can

  • VH!!! Great!!! =D

  • OMG...big yellow cat!

  • that sounds pretty cool and its amazing you got it for $25!

  • that sounds almost too good to be true!

  • damn 25$, but how much were you mods ? or just how much is your talent ?

  • man before mean streets were you just messing around i love that riff and that tone is amazing vh all the way man.

  • where did u get that head and how much was it?

  • VH!!!

  • awesome video great playing!

  • Song at 2:03?

  • @jagjaghuh mean street van halen

  • Great tone! I hear alot of Halen here. Sounds great!!

  • Wow. Wasn't expecting that.

  • i love the fucking sound of this guitar!!!!

    it's just an eargasm!!!

  • What kind of string set are you using here? I have now a little bit too fat strings on my sg3 and it makes it sound unclean.

  • @MostBever I use Ernie Ball Regular Slinky 10-46. I seriously don't see how changing your string gauge will make your guitar sound cleaner. You should make sure your guitar is properly set up and that you are playing cleanly.

  • @riffguy Well, of course, it sound clean on a clean channel, but when I use the overdrive it is a but too crunchy, its like when you use hotter pickups which creates more sound, the tones becomes very fat and I dont like that in riffs, but with higher frets in solos its fine.

  • @riffguy I have a B.C Rich with emg's and the thinnest ernie ball strings and it makes my amp sounf totaly different, of course there are two totaly different pickup types, but i have a 58 (I think) which haven't much output and a 81 (again I think) with more output, with the 58 in the bridge and the 81 in the neck.

  • @riffguy I can get a totaly perfect sound for my ears with the 58 in riffs and solos and the 81's just doesn't do it for me and isn't the 58 pretty much likes the bridge humbucker on the sg3?

  • @riffguy Well, I think I bought the sg3 with the same string thikness like what you are using now, wich sounded great, but they were old so I decided to try a bit thicker which aperently created more power from the pickups to see if it made it better for playing, but yes, it's better to play with, but ruins the sound for me. And for the last: yes, the guitar is fine and i tries to play clean. :)

  • @riffguy

PS: sorry for "spamming" your video, bit i wanted to tell you my answer and the comment "controller" wouldn't allow so many words.

  • @riffguy

Well, some cheap shitty strings do have a natural buzz to them.. i think its either because of that they are uneven in the windings, or in the ball end.

But in the end, it doesnt make THAT much of a difference, but i have noticed some STRINGS that have been buzzing(Changing them got rid of the problems, and it never came back.).

  • @MostBever i say its either you, the bridge, pickups, or the amp that sounds unclean.

  • nice i was at guitar center today and i tryed the new ma out....ITS HORRIBLE my little fender super champ sound better i think if u go marshal u need the jcm 800 or dont borther cuz it will sound like shit

  • Dude your playing is so fuckin inspirational. Keep it up

  • what areas of the amp did you mod?

  • What a deal !!!

  • Nice! Very 'Brown'...

  • Ha! Apologies. I overlooked your description.

  • No problem, thanks for checking out the video.

  • Hey, you say that SG is run direct to the head, right? Where's that reverb coming from, then?

  • I thought I had already explained this in the description.

  • That tone is crazy man!

  • Wicked tone coming from that combination. If that is a Traynor bass head, it has a little magic in it because it sure does sound sweet.

  • pretty neat...

  • Traynor rules!!! I have a YCS50 and couldnt be happier with the price i payed for the sound/versatility/features.

  • @Dube230 how do You run Your effects with Your YCS 50 , I have one too , I fuckin love it, but it always ends up sounding WAY better without effects, any ideas ? gotta be the best amp for the money on the market though 100%

  • i like your mean streets cover better than the original, the tone is freakin awesome, and playing is groovin

  • you should make a tutorial of sorts on how to do this.. I'm out a head so i have no amp now. and ive got plenty of time to build one..

  • Amazing sound RiffGuy..

    Greetz Mario

  • hi, did you just cascade the channels?

  • FFFFFFFFFFpppppppppPPPPPp-I don't think I'll ever get over this video.

  • you better hope that cat dont jump on that open amp head! !@#$%^&*() dope!

  • i bet riffguy never has to go to guitarcenter

  • there are sadly no guitar centers in canada lol :'( ...

  • Music + cats = pure awesome

  • This amp has EL34's. You can probably find one of these old amps on Ebay, but this particular one is one of a kind due to the modifications and it's not for sale.

  • Man i could live in that room surviving on pure music for years! :D

  • Is it common to not get good-sounding low string pinch harmonics on SGs?!

  • hi, i use an SG and Marshall together and i have noticed that it is harder to get the standard in your face pinch harmonic on the low strings. i don't think its so much the SG but also the Marshall too. the pinch is still there it just sounds unique and different. its all a matter of preference though, what ever you like.

    -rock on! \m/

  • van halen wath effect use not just amp

  • when you first started guitar, were you like a naturally talented prodigy or did you get that good from constant practice?

  • I was a creative & artistic person from a very early age, but playing guitar didn't come easily. I had a lot of drive & really spent a lot of time practicing.

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome Video, but why is there only one volume and tone knob? Amazing Jam!

  • That's just how an SG-3 is configured. I guess Gibson figured the 6 position rotary switch was hard enough to operate without adding the other controls.

  • Oh My God!!! I was not expecting that brown sound at all.. Christ it is Van Halen all over...!"

    Mega!

Ha ha... just wrote the above and you went into Van Halen... he he.. Rock on Mate!

  • Nice playin' young man!

  • Wow! So those vintage mullard's in my 68 traynor yba-1 are basicly garbage? I think not, they sound so sweeeeet!

  • That was awsome. i just picked myself up a traynor yba-1. May do a few mods. An attenuator perhaps. Need to find a

    4X12 cab. is that a 1960A, Greenbacks?

  • If Ritchie Blackmore and Lita Ford had a kid it would be you!!! Great tone.

  • A fat cat in the floor! :D

The cat get scared when you play loud? Or is ok for him(her)? :)

  • Awesome video and mods to the Traynor! But if Riffguy or anybody could please explain to me what he's doing from 1:10-1:12, I would deeply appreciate it :D

  • It's a 2 note chord where I am bending one of the notes. Play the B string (17th fret) and the G string (16th fret and bend it a whole step).

  • Thanks man, I got it now :D

  • its just pentatonics man, slow it down in your head and use your ears

  • That's awesome riffguy. I've had an old Bassmaster II (I think the model is a YBA-2) built in 69 that has collected dust because it sounded like crap. Finally gave it to someone knowledgable about amp builds who tells me it is going to come back sounding very Marshall. I can't look for specific mods, because the guy who gave it to me got it from Pete Traynor himself, who supposedly put some of his own mods on it. Looking forward to Christmas this year!

  • traynor amps are MONSTERS!!! modified or not, they kick a**

  • LOVE THE TONE. could you tell me which tubes and speakers you use??? im on the quest for MY tone and this sounds very close to what i want...

  • then your seeking for a raw van halen sound, check on the mods he made to his marshalls back then in late seventies and 80s, awesome shred sound. I'm in love with a plexi MKII, what a pity in this fucking country one of those head's is worth over 2000 dollars, and a 1960 cab is another 1000 :(

  • I like Riffguy's tone so much that i get pissed off. How many watts is this beast?

  • lol. looks like either 30, 50 or 60 watts.... i could be completely wrong though...:P

  • I can get the exact same tone from my vintage v100 and marshall mg50dfx solid state combo.

  • Now, thats's gotta be the most ridiculous comment I've read all week!

  • Yes from time to time you hear this. I heard another ridiculous the other day from a visitor at my home.. I can get a Randy Rhoads tone out of a Yamaha $200 guitar and a line6 spider ...yes he told I tried it in the shop... Cheers.!

  • well, some of us are 15 and don't have endless money to spend on our gear so make the best out of what we have and I CAN get a tone very similair, no it it is not 100% accurate, but it's very damn near and it's people like you that put the younger generation off of playing the guitar, as they get laughed at for having to buy budget gear!

  • You don't have to spent big money to get a good tone. Traynors for instance are very affordable and have a top tone. The mistake is for people buying solid states and then a bunch of this and that to make it sound good ,at the end they spent more money than having bought something descent from the start. Now thinking that a solid state thing can substitute or even match the tone of a good quality tube amp is just an illusion ,sometimes sounding ridiculous . IMO as well.

  • well mate, I can't afford a good tube amp and I don't use any effects (apart from a crybaby wah VERY occasionaly), so I got an amp with a tube simulator. It sounds just as good and I've regularly been compllimented on how good a tone I get out of it!

  • or you could save up money and buy stuff?

it gives you something to work for.

take the other guitar played in my band and i for example.

purchased with our own money that we worked hard for he has a Marshall JVM 410H, a fender strat plus, and a gibson les paul.

I currently have a Marshall JCM 2000 TSL a Gibson les paul Double cut and a fender strat.

along with pedal boards for each of us.

so quit whining, get off your lazy ass, and do something.

and your band sucks. just throwing that out there

  • well mate, I like my gear so there. also, I don't care about ur opinion on my band, it was our first rehearsal and frankly, I don't give a crap what u think!

I'm not whining, I'm just saying my views!

  • @tfritz754

In your videos you don't seem a day over 18. Are you still living with your parents? Have any bills to pay? Living expenses? A mortgage? Even still, where does a kid your age find a job that pays enough for all of that gear? Or did your parents make up the difference? And being that the other kid is 15, I think it's a bit early to be calling him lazy. Besides, you don't know this kid at all. And your band sucks too, by the way. Just throwing that out there.

  • good call. i am not a day over 18. 17 actually. i dont have any bills. well besides a phone bill. and i actually work at a service center selling tires. my parents paid $0 for my gear. hard work pays off

  • most people that arent big dont even have close to the arsenal that riffguy has, idk whos laughing at you for hAVING "generic" gear.. maybe yourself?

  • plus, take a look at my version of tnt by AC/DC on my page an you'll see that I can get a very similair tone!

  • If Michael Schenker hears this he will com and steal that amp from you .. superbly done .. I had 15 Marshalls from the 1960s and early 19702 between the ages of 14 and 28 .. now I am 46 have 4 traynors and they make ALL the marshalls i had and used sound like cheap old tat !

  • Holy ShitBalls Riffguy....'ave a look at those trannys

  • How would you compare one of the new Traynors i.e. YCS-50 Head if you have tested one with a Marshall of your choice of course.. I don;t have the opportunity to test one , but from what I hear in the internet they seem to have classic tone with lots of bite and lots of bass presence Thanks

  • I tried a Traynor Custom Special 100 half stack once and was very impressed. It truly was one of the greatest sounding & most responsive amps I've ever played through. Somebody at Yorkville understands tone.

  • Thanks , once again for your answer. Cheers!

  • Indeed I have ordered one , but cause of a stupid seller they sent me the 50W..The amp sounds totaly Great and has response and quality to it...But it is 50W.... in a way lacks the headroom of the 100W I was looking for ( have the ENGL 100W RB head now)..snifff...sniff.. I have also noticed that my neighbours when I play the 100W call the police sooner than when I play the 50W(ENGL thunder). So it has to be 100...I am a bit in dispair cause I have to return it...Also think for the 120Savage.

  • Of course there is the option to plug them all together and get a total 200W but then again if I had an 100 I would be gettin 250W total.... If I keep it so don;t get to the hassle of returning it.... Getting the Savage would give me 320W total... Then go for best time police calling new record. CHEERS man , play loud !!

  • What is your cats name?

  • Puddin'

  • So if the master is on 2, all that distortion is from the preamp... how do you get so much output from those pups??? thats crazy. oh yeah very close brown sound btw... mean street was like perfect

  • It's relatively easy to modify a tube amp to make a lot of gain, the trick is making the gain sound good.

  • Your stuff rules!!!!!

    Cool everythning!!!

  • no one told me eddie had a twin

  • whats the wattage on that beast?

  • 50 watts.

  • Traynor bassmaster had reverb??? (LOL) Great playing BTW. - Kent

  • nice sg

    you rock

  • LoL, nothing in the frame indicates the year this was filmed is any later than 1979

  • Except the Gibson SG-3 which came out in 2007.

  • where can i get one and for how much

  • btw, MAD props dude, that tone is sick great job on that build. what kills me is you probably have $150 in that amp haha.

i know i probably have $60 in parts and $450 in the transformer/choke with 3 years of engineering/bench time on mine.

keep rockin dude, and nice 75's

  • I am speachless ...hehehe

  • does the middle pickup get in the way or do you keep it lower than the other two? p.s you rock. when people ask me what my style of rock is, my answer is RIFFGUY

  • oh something else.

I own a original schematic, for the (1967 ara) Traynor custom reverb.(N.O.S.)

I bought it off ebay (the guy had it for 45 years) and i will scan it and send it to anyone who might need it (no charge).

    Peace

    Joe

  • i have a 69 guitar mate reverb :O
