@EntertainmentAddams hmmmm.... yeah. sutton is amazing. she is much more diverse and can dance and stuff better than ms. ripley..... but... she didn't deserve it for Shrek.... because... well... it was Shrek. haha
She's so far from crazy. She's passionate, and everything she says here is incredible. She's the most insightful and wonderful human being I've ever encountered in my life.
Does anyone else think that they RAAAAAAAACE through the nominees in the last few Tony years - I mean if you watch even the 2003 Best Actress Musical clip or 1997 Bebe Neuwirth clip - they were much slower paced. This is manic
wow... i remember watching this last year and thinking she sounded crazy and i just wrote off the speech but now that I watch it again, I think that is one of the best acceptance speeches. Not a long list of names no one knows, but she said what it meant to her and thats what really matters
I absolutely adore Sutton's sheer look of jealousy after Alice finishes her speech. Alice deserved this though (: Glad I'm finally seeing her right before she leaves!
There were alot of people in that audience (critics and whatnot) when they first heard of Next to Normal and saw that Alice Ripley was going to play it thought she would portray the role horribly.Alice isnt all the way there but in a way this speech also was kind of her way of saying In Your Face to those doubters Kind of simliar to Lin Manuel Rapping his tony speech alot of people told him a Hip Hop musical would never make it on broadway.
My friend know a friend of hers and apperanly she did the scream not only because she tried not to cry but she said she wanted to make good television.
I've seen over 700 shows since 1979, and Alice Ripley is as good (or better) than anybody I've ever seen. And this is the best musical I have ever seen, including the likes of Carousel, Sweeney Todd, My Fair Lady, etc. See it, its a truly amazing emotional experience.
egmorox13 - and everything else goes, away, everything else goes away. and you play till it's perfect, you play till you ache...
i had the divine privilege of seeing all of the OBC yesterday at aaron's last performance. i had already seen it two nights previously, too. this is by far the most moving musical on broadway and the cast's devotion to the show is so real and relatable. if you haven't seen this yet, you have to. it should have one for all of it's 11 (right?) tony nominations. <3
WAIT! I think my drama teacher pretty much summed up why she is going so over the top!
She's still in character!
Alice has said that she puts herself into her character very deeply and almost lives her life as Diana, so it's not surprising to still be in character just some minutes after her performance.
Did you noticve she didnt mention her husband? Shannon? (yes thats his name) she said my family, said all their names except the husband. and they didnt hug when she got up, just kind of awkwardly looked at each other. idk
I can't imagine that anybody has ever deserved this or any other acting prize more than the incredible Alice Ripley. Her performance in Next to Normal blew me away more than anything I've seen, which is over 700 shows. See her while you can, its one of the greatest, most moving shows too.
I saw her on Next to Normal last night. And I fell in love with everything about that show. Alice Ripley is the god of Broadway as far as I'm concerned.
I cried and laughed and cried some more. She puts so much passion onto stage, its almost scary. Hell yeah, musical theatre is a fine art.
I don't need a life that's normal, that's way too far away, but something next to normal would be okay...
i love her! she is the sweetest and funniest person you will ever meet! I got to meet her at the stage door and she was so sweet.
And i love how when they showed the audience, bobby spencer and jenn damiano looked so proud of alice (especially bobby [love him too!]) and then sutton looks like she is pissed. haha. all the nominees for everything were so talented, but alice ripley and any nominees for next to normal outstood others, so i don't get how Billy elliot won almost everything.
When I first saw this (I hadn't even really heard of the show yet) I thought "wow, that actress is going a little overboard" But then I realized, this woman has worked unbelievable hard with tons of devotion to play this extremely complex character, heck, this her one time to go nuts, so she can say whatever she wants!
The most self-indulgent, over-acted, talked-a-lot-but-said-NOTHING acceptance speeches I have ever seen. It's enough to make me not want to see the show.
whatd all you people mean "buck sent me" I keep looking through the michael buckleys videos and I can't find anything about alice ripley's tony speech! link?
Haha she definitely planned her speech! Not one of those "Oh I didn't think I'd win!" types, I guess. She had some self-confidence, and rightfully so! Go Alice!
People. Drop it. She was ecstatic. She just won a fucking tony award. I guess when you all win your tonys youll just say "hey, thanks everybody." and walk off. Jesus H. Christ as I live and Breathe.
you are so right... but he H in jesus Christ.... really? haha... I know if I were her I would have been freaking out... and I think she is amazing!!!!
Holy Crap! I was taking a break from my hellacious day to watch some videos...saw this, loved it, but even more are all of your comments!! Freakin' funny, people!! Thank you for the laughs!! Sally Fields...yeah, she's safe...Batshit crazy?? Hillarious! Haven't heard that in ages! She is a bit off her rocker, but most extraordinarily talented people are, in one way or another...Freakin funny comments!!
Secondly, holy crap Alice Ripley was a BEAST up there. A little eccentric? Yes. But completely awesome? YESSSSSS! You could totally tell how much she was honored to have that award! And of course, she deserved it. I mean really, that character she created in N2N is so complex and deep that she mustve put herself into it :)
Alice Ripley is one of the fiercest people I have ever seen! It was a great speech, and I was sitting in the audience b/c of my friend Haydn Gwynne... I am DYING to see her in N2N and I hope she continues to be passionate and doing what she loves, and you are all haters for saying she is crazy... Everyone in show business is just a little nutty, but that is why show people rock!
Yeah pretty bombastic acceptance speech..I think they better check the props tables for missing pills....but it is her holding the award...I never will do that!
I dont know why everyone is making fun of Shrek the musical when there is Nutty Professor and Spiderman coming out. How about you see the show before you judge it.
I don't understand why everyone is so down on Sutton being in a musical comedy. I think Shrek is a really fun show, and the stereotype that only dramas are of value is just silly. Jeannie Tesori is a fabulous composer. It may not bring you to tears, but Shrek is a great Broadway show.
I feel kinda bad for Sutton. She's been nominated for every part she's done except Inga, but she only won the first time. It must be frustrating winning the first time, but none of the others. It reminds me of Audrey Hepburn and Roman Holiday.
I love Sutton foster 2, like she is fantastic, what I meant was that, like, she was playing Fiona, is not a extreamelly hard role, like if you compare it to Diana
many people have won tony awards. some cry and are inarticulate, babble and ramble on. NOBODY has ever come across quite as "bat-shit crazy" as ms. ripley did. hers was a unique acceptance speech, to be sure. no one is denying the great talent she possesses, but she did indeed seem QUITE INSANE...
Alice had so much more emotional acting to do. Her subject was a very heavy subject. Sutton was a princess. There is a big difference in what they had to act. I do believe they made the right choice. Alice put everything into that role and it worked. And no she is NOT crazy! What would you do if you just won a TONY AWARD?!
For playing the princess in Shrek? Years from now, people are gonna talk about Next to Normal and Alice Ripley the way that they talk about Merman in Gypsy or Laurette Taylor in The Glass Menagerie. Sutton Foster is an amazingly gifted musical performer, but she needs to find better material. She just seems to attach herself to big, bloated crappy shows. That said, I'm glad she won for Millie and hope to see her win another Tony soon.
That's true, and plus millie was a million times better than shrek...but i still prefer sutton instead of alice, that's just me, but alice did do an AMAZING job, far beyond shrek, but millie would have won against next to normal, and alices speech is alittle weird, but cute
@MDSCFALNM Oh Please. Do not compare this overrated performance to classics. She is so "actressy" and so full of herself. And I bet Marin Mazzie will be a MAJOR improvement.
@roccoh21 Have you actually *seen* the show? Hers is one of the finest performances I've ever see on on stage (real play or musical) in decades of theatre going. "Oh please" yourself.
Kate Jennings Grant, Stephanie J Block, and Megan Hilty are three performances that i think should have easily beat out sutton for a nom this year. not hating on sutton but Shrek is far below her capabilities
Its good that she is still in character for accepting the award! ha ha!! No, seriously I love her and think it was deserved and love the sentiment, but she did come off as slightly cookoo!!
Sutton doesn't look pissed. I think she might be a little disappointed. I think that's a proud face. Sutton said in some interview it was an honor to be nominated and she's glad her show was recognized. She also said it's not about winning or losing. She was just happy to be nominated for the fourth time. Besides, she'll win again. :)
People! Leave Alice alone about her being "crazy"! If she was crazy, she would like "Haha! Fuck yeah, bitches!" She is just a passionate woman and it's nice to see someone is that passionate about their work because it means they are going to try their best to do their best when performing or creating whatever it is they do. Honestly, if you won an extremely prestigious award for what you're passionate about, you'd would be just like her. I know I would be just as overwhelmed.
Sutton was stunning I really hoped she could win because it's a huge gap since she won for Thoroughly Mordern Millie, but miss Ripley was well desreved too. However I think she should have won long time ago, in 1998 for "Side Show" along with Emily Skinner instead of Natasha Richardson in "Cabaret".
I'm speechless after every performance she does. I'm in awe.

Maybe she was in character...?

Alice FTW
She's intense.

I think the quote she read was a little overdone, especially on the "politics" part. But hey, I'm not a Tony Award winning actress.

That's true, and plus millie was a million times better than shrek...but i still prefer sutton instead of alice, that's just me, but alice did do an AMAZING job, far beyond shrek, but millie would have won against next to normal, and alices speech is alittle weird, but cute
tdalysinger 2 years ago 2
@MDSCFALNM Oh Please. Do not compare this overrated performance to classics. She is so "actressy" and so full of herself. And I bet Marin Mazzie will be a MAJOR improvement.

@roccoh21 Have you actually *seen* the show? Hers is one of the finest performances I've ever see on on stage (real play or musical) in decades of theatre going. "Oh please" yourself.

haha sutton definitely was never going to win. i'm still shocked she got nominated. there were far better this year

like who?
viniciusbfonseca 2 years ago

I know I would be just as overwhelmed.

pooor sutton she really is one of my favs

Sutton was stunning I really hoped she could win because it's a huge gap since she won for Thoroughly Mordern Millie, but miss Ripley was well desreved too. However I think she should have won long time ago, in 1998 for "Side Show" along with Emily Skinner instead of Natasha Richardson in "Cabaret".
