Thank God for the Ella Fitzgeralds,Dinah Shores, Mahalia, Sarah Vaughn, Pearl Bailey,Queen Sutherland,Aretha,Beyonce,...Oh my Lord where has music gone.:(
@SelfRevolution37 who are you, and you sound really idiotic, because you don't know me nor good music. Stop spending time worrying about me and my comments and you find time to form an opinion on your own instead of PROVING yourself to be an idiot being a miserable individual looking to create conflict lol. I LOVE MUSIC, employed, educated here.
Only Billy Holliday coud comper with Ella. But no.This is not good compare. When I listen Ella I pray - oh Ella don't break your thoung. But Billi was different
Argh! Why did it cut off - OMG. I have a recording where she slots in Smoke Get's in Your Eyes but not Hard Day's Night!!! Noone will ever reach her skill or style <3
"A singer has to work doubly hard to emit those random notes in scat singing with perfect intonation. Well, I should say all singers except Ella Fitzgerald. Her notes float out in perfect pitch, effortless and, most important of all, swinging. Ella had the best ear of any singer ever." - Mel Torme
There was no lady greater in scat, than Ella. I'm a white woman, and I always tried to imitatete her in my basement, singing to her records to no avail. No one, imagine me., could ever....possily come close. What a gift she was to all of us. We are blessed to have had her in our lives.
she plays with the notes like a child. I´ve seen other big singers messing this song up (just type the name of this song here and compare). She doesn´t - she has the command of this song.
LOL! Love how towards the end she's like, "Hope that I am still in tune". I'm sure she was being serious, but it just goes to show you that she must've had a good sense of humor. I love her music.
Hey Ella Fitzgerald fans, want to see something awesome bricks? Skip to 4:05 , listen for about ten seconds. Now search /watch?v=9HBfomKFH14&feature= from youtube and skip that to 4:28 :D :D
So right about the never heard an off key note -- EXCEPT when would intentionally and with great finesse hit the note on "KEY" in the song "You Can't Take That Away From Me" the lyric "...the way you sing off KEY, the memory of all that, no, no you can't take that away from me" -- and even then it was a beautiful off key note
@jonas220393 I do believe it is a quote from the finale of the William Tell Overture (Giachino Rossini) or better known as part of the "Lone Ranger" theme.
Not high enough! Once you've heard Ella do it and lived with someone who helped you reach it. Gossomer wisps of frosty rime and smoky breath, all the same. Ephemreral and just as long , but by God is it ever worth it!
He is bored of saying the same things over and over and over again, anyone would be:) He just switches off really in order to cope. He's extremely bright, you only have to sit in to notice that!
Whatever happened to the complete version? This Song is about 7 minutes long but I can't find it anywhere?!?! All I found was this 4 minute video which is incomplete...help!!!
@dperkins1911 you are so right.....we don't have anyone like this, anyone....i mean, we do have great singers (a few, specially in popular music) but no one will ever compare to Ella. I mean, even back in her time, a lot of singers could only hope to sing like this......she was so unique....long live ella!!!
estebangarciaderusia beside to thank you for uploading this version ... can you inform me when and what time this was done? thanks in advance ... one of the greatest ella fans .....eva
simply answer:sent from heaven.... not even ONE singer is close to her. a lto of excellent ones have been here but ella... takes them all in a tisket. and the can go home. whenever i try to sing a new song and listening the way ella does i take my micro and through it in the corner. first... than i stand up and try to work as hard as i can...she is still THE ONLY teacher for me...
@xtremenortherner we didn't have her for a time....we have her know and will have her forever...there is no other like ella fitzgerald, she is simply the best....to meet her music is a gift of God, she is that good!!!
What Ella is trying to do here is repeating the way she did How High the Moon in 1947 where she forgot the lyrics and scatted and improvise the whole song to the end. Much, much longer than this one. That song of her became legedary. In 1960 she did it once more. In this footage she sings a line of the Beatles "it's been a Heart Days Night" and that's from the sixties.
This is from a concert in Stockholm in 1966 with the Ellington band (I've never been sure if it's the exact same one that's on CD as The Stockholm Concert, but the repertoire is the same, if only in a different order).
Shane sadly I think the version they used for How High The Moon on the CD was from the 1960 Berlin Concert. This is still very much unissued. There is another version from Brussels 1966 where the version is similar to this. The 1966 Stockholm for the original LP and then CD release is from the TV special and a radio performance around the same time (i.e Cottontail )
I was mistaken in thinking How High The Moon was included on the Stockholm Lp/CD. However, the version here IS from the same TV show that most of the other tracks were taken from for the LP, which I have on videotape (hence why I thought HHTM was on the audio CD too). Duke and the band are on for the first half of the show with Ella coming on for Wives And Lovers, Sweet Georgia Brown, So Danca Samba, High The Moon, IMagine Mr Frustration (my favourite Ella performance) and Duke's Place.

The audio is waaay out of time with the video. I thought I saw Cat Anderson on trumpet briefly... I know she did some stuff with Duke's band with her piano player... Fantastic clip! The woman was absolutely brilliant.
