I was against it, too. BUT - people need to remember, TARP was a LOAN package to the banks, as opposed to Obama's stimulus plan, which was a reckless SPENDING package (meaning, MORE future taxes). At least with the TARP program, the money is required to be PAID BACK, and to date, more than half already has! It was wrong to have NEEDED the TARP program, but perhaps right to have used it. Question now - how do we ensure NEVER being in that spot again? That's what this film is about.
TARP, as originally "designed" by Paulsen was to be a fund to buy the "toxic" mortgage securities from financial institutions so that things like a value-destroying Mark to Market rule and short-selling wouldn't continue to hammer the purported balance sheets and reserve requirements for banks.
Then sometime in the future, the housing values would magically be recovered and the govt would sell their holdings and profit.

@Nuanceqwest The point is that both parties have messed up our country because of their greed and making deals at our cost. The tea party wants us to go back to the Constitution and follow it as we should be doing.

The dems are the ones who have promised all the entitlements that are bankrupting us. Right now, our net national wealth (all personal and business assets combined) is 50 trillion dollars. Our government entitlements already total $100 trillion. Consider that. We are not just $14 trillion in the red (our national debt) - we are, based on promises from liberal politicians, FIFTY TRILLION DOLLARS IN THE RED. And you blame Hannity? Get real.

By the way --- when Palin was Governor, Alaska was one of only 5 states out of 50 (57 is your name is Obama) to have had a budget SURPLUS. How's that liberal spending working out in California, New York, and other blue states?

WRONG!! When Clinton was President, he spent WILDLY for his fist two years in office, setting the stage for the Newt Gingrich led 'Contract With America'. The ensuing midterm elections saw the Republicans take back the majority and rein in liberal spending. THEN came the balanced budget. Go look it up. It's in the history books (and I was there), but I know you liberals don't care about little details like history, facts, etc.

If you look at the revenue decline that began in 2000 you would see that the "surplus" was not going to be sustained.
(that of course doesn't excuse what the 2000s GOP did)
so please.. Clinton had nothing to do with anything. His budgets never even forecasted a surplus.until they actually happened.

Dum dum.... it means Clinton did not construct a budget aimed towards surplus. Gingrich gets the most credit for getting it close to true surplus but even still,, it was the NASDAQ bubble that contributed the most to it.

If this documentary asserts the idea that our country would have failed had those big banks not been bailed out, then all this is is propaganda. When a company or bank, no matter how big the balance sheet is, declares bankruptcy it moves to liquidate bad assets for what theyre actually worth. Things might have been bad for a year but we wouldnt have this serious monetary issue that were dealing with right now. Great Depression of 1920. Mises institute.

@rollsroyce707 Rollsroyce: How you reached the conclusion that this film would be Pro-TARP is a mystery to me. Do you know anything about Conservatives? We were against it then , we're against it now.
The speaker you heard at the beginning was a Dem Congression who was telling that story on CSPAN.

I was against it, too. BUT - people need to remember, TARP was a LOAN package to the banks, as opposed to Obama's stimulus plan, which was a reckless SPENDING package (meaning, MORE future taxes). At least with the TARP program, the money is required to be PAID BACK, and to date, more than half already has! It was wrong to have NEEDED the TARP program, but perhaps right to have used it. Question now - how do we ensure NEVER being in that spot again? That's what this film is about.

TARP, as originally "designed" by Paulsen was to be a fund to buy the "toxic" mortgage securities from financial institutions so that things like a value-destroying Mark to Market rule and short-selling wouldn't continue to hammer the purported balance sheets and reserve requirements for banks.
Then sometime in the future, the housing values would magically be recovered and the govt would sell their holdings and profit.

Right after the bill was signed Paulsen decides that the Fed Govt is going to buy the stock and warrants of the banks... whether the banks want it or not.
I doubt the dollars being repaid have the same value of the dollars that were borrowed. I think the banks are just getting printed dollars from the Fed and then using the printed money to pay the TARP off.
